4 out of 5 stars Not a watch for "wimps"!   February 23, 2008

American Airforce crews affectionatley call the B52 bomber the "BUFF" - Big Ugly Fat "Fellow", the same could easily be said of the Seiko SRH005P1 Velatura. Make no mistake, this is a big heavy watch. Seiko unveiled their Kinetic Direct Drive movement late in 2007, and this model is one of three flagship models to pilot the calibre in Seiko's Yachting "Velatura" collection. For those that don't know "Kinetic" is Seiko's clever system of combining the relative accuracy and effciency of an electronic quartz movement, with the convenience of an automatic watch. In effect it is powered by motion and needs no battery. The twist with "Direct Drive" is that you have the option of manually winding the power with up to a months reserve as well.

The face of the watch is relatively conventional except for the retrogade dial showing day of the week, and the large dial on the left of the face indicating the power reserve level. Manaul winding makes the indicator of the power dispaly "rev" up and down the scale like the tachometer of a car... quite a talking point - and let's face it, this watch will get noticed!

The stainless steel bracelet supplied is of the three fold clasp variety and well finished, although somewhat noisier than the ones on the two Omega's that I own.

I note the previous reviewer's comments on the amount of time it takes to fully charge the power reserve, however it is important to remember that this is, in effect, an automatic watch. Most mechanical automatic movements will give a power reserve of around two days, because this is a kinetic movement you can have a far greater reserve, but it will take significantly more movement to achieve the full month's supply. As with any automatic/kinetic watch, if you're not going to wear it all the time it will eventaully run down unless you take steps to prevent this.

Overall I like this watch. It's unique. I'm not entirely sure why it is aimed at the yachting fraternity, as it seems to have little that specifically relates to the sport, and is only rated as water resistant to 100 metres, whereas it's stablemates lower in the range feature a yachting timer. For me the UK price is a little steep to justify what you are getting in my opinion, I paid less than a third of the UK RRP in Hong Kong for mine, but with that reservation I would describe this as an interesting and well built offering from the world leader in Electronic Quartz movements.

5 out of 5 stars Omega who????   January 6, 2008

I have been an avid watch man for a number of years, having owned, in particular a number of Omega's. However, when I set my eyes on this beautiful watch I was hooked and immediately bought ( 550 from Beaverbrooks), selling my Seamaster the next day on Ebay.

Needles to say I am delighted with the watch - fantastic looks, build quality and accuracy. I have had no problems with power management - by the end of the first day of wear it had well over a weeks power reserve, with no manual intervention from me. Within a couple of days of normal wear, it was up to a months reserve and has stayed there ever since.

Buy one - you will not be disapointed!

3 out of 5 stars ...but for the power management   November 16, 2007

Impressive looks, properly sized, sits perfectly on the wrist.

Downside is power management. Power is generated by rotating the crown. But after about 10 minutes of rotation, power for only about 1 day is generated. This is more than enough if the watch will be worn daily or thereabout as power needed to keep it reasonably charged is maintained by wrist movement.

But if the watch will be left unused for several days at a time the power runs out and the watch stops, necessitating another round of crown rotation and day / date setting. I do not have this problem with the Seiko SNL029P2 Sportura kinetic which keeps its charge for reasonably lengthy periods.

It is possible to rotate the crown and generate power for the maximum 1 month but I am unwilling to do more than 10 mins of it. I feel fed up of having to do this sort of rotation for as long as I will be keeping the watch. Haven't had to do crown winding on a watch in decades.

The battery operated Velaturas' (such as the Seiko Yachting Timer SPC007P1) are perhaps a better choice for occasional users, this one isn't.
