Better than 06 September 21, 2007 Dragon 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
08 is better than 06 because of better gameplay. The fluidity of the game has improved and come closer to real rugby. The flaws pointed out by reviewers are there but I find that 08 is a good evolution from 06 (clearly not a revolution) What has not been fixed is the management of tackles and rucks which is still mainly a random process. For me the next version of the game (09 or 10) has to concentrate on this. For rugby lover I recommend buying the game as there is no competition any longer in terms of rugby game (Rugby challenge was a flop and it does not seem that new versions will be launched)
They are sooooo lazy!!!!! Two years and they come up with this!?!? August 1, 2007 J. Millward (UK) 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
Summary: There are hardly any changes to rugby 06. This game was rushed out with the world cup pending. It doesn't work on the PS3 which is very frustrating - it crashes whilst loading the training mode. There are just too many inaccuracies in the uneditable player database. Pros: -Unfortunately still the best rugby game out. -Teams commit random penalties and offences now, whereas this didn't happen much at all in rugby 06. -Kicking - slight improvement on rugby 06 with better use of camera angles to kick from penalties Cons: -Defence is still very difficult - you largely need to leave tackling to the computer as lining players up yourself is infuriating. -Attacking is not accurate - sling it out wide with a better team and it's very easy to run around your man. Also the same old gaps appear as in the rugby 06 game - the intelligence of the teams hasn't changed (lazy again). -Line outs - why have they made these easier than last time? there's no no skill involved in a line out - just press a button and the ball is thrown and the player jumps -Scrums - slight improvement but still very little skill involved -Lions tour has been dropped - why?! -Very cumbersome to pick your team from the player database - no shortcuts or ability to, for example, only view the centres. You need to scroll through all forwards first. -Turnovers at rucks still occur randomly - even with the new meters in place, my meter was all my colour and the opposition still managed to turn the ball over on random occasions. -Players stats haven't been updated at all - lots of the new up and coming decent players have very low ratings which is sooooo lazy especially with the world cup so close (strettle rated 66). You're stuck having to pick the same team as rugby 06. And some players are even missing (where's lewis moody?!). Others are duplicated with identical stats but a slightly differently spelt name (van gisbergen & van gisbirgen?!) If you already have rugby 06, do not bother buying this game. It really just isn't worth it. If you love rugby and want a good game with friends on the PS2 then you don't have much other choice than buying this game.
this game is not bads it is the best rugby game ever!!!!! September 15, 2007 Ms. Fiona Bury 12 out of 15 found this review helpful
many people have said that rugby 08 is bad and not worth getting but realy its FANTASTIC!!! The graphics are realy good the gameplay is realistic and doing the world cup is so fun!!! i was so happy when i got ireland to win the world cup and see them lift the world cup,but its not just the world cup thats good, scrums are so realistic in 08 becouse you can not just turn the scrum you can move it left or right, lineouts are realy good with the camera been right next to the hooker when the ball is thrown. Also it has updated All the teams shirts to what they are like today. so this is a must have rugby game!!!!
EA Sports Must do better! July 30, 2007 Mr. S. Kent (UK) 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
Well first things first, the gameplay on this game is better than any other rugby game available on the PS2. They have improved certain aspects of the game, the kits and stadium are excellent and these add nice features to the game. There is a 'but'!!! The accuracy of the players database in absolutely shocking, for starters there are two Gareth Thomas's who are identical players but with the surname spelt incorrectly. I also had a go on the world league game, I played as Cardiff and had to bring Dan Baugh on as a substitute (must admit I thought he was retired anyway), now last time I checked Dan has been bald for pretty much his whole career, suddenly he has a whole head of hair - I bet he's chuffed to bits, but EA Sports researchers need to be fired and if they want to employ someone to carry this out for them I will do it for a reasonable salary! There are hundreds of thousands of Rugby fans out there and I bet many will buy this game, start giving rugby the same respect as Fifa gets year after year!
Do not buy August 1, 2007 Lazy EA (Wales) 11 out of 17 found this review helpful
Do not buy this game, a waste of 30. Basically exactly the same as rugby 06 with a few changes that don't make the game any better. For instance, in "play now", changing the sides is a lot more complicated than previous versions. The game is also very easy if you've played any previous EA rugby games and makes playing "one player" very boring e.g when beating the computer by 20 points on your first go on the new game on it's most diffucult standard, "elite", is no fun at all. EA sports don't care about rugby fans, they are so lazy when it comes to their rugby games. On their football version of games (Fifa) they keep all the transfers right up to date even in leagues such as the Mexican where noone really cares anyway. However on the rugby games with alot less teams to keep up to date with, the transfers are years out of date e.g James Hook doesn't even play for Neath-Swansea as they are called in the game. There are many more lazy mistakes like these; listing them all would take days. The interntioanl selections are awful too e.g Hal Luscombe and Scott Morgan start for Wales, Stephen Jones isn't even in the squad and Dave Strettle isn't in the England squad either. Editing these mistakes plus many many more would take hours, whereas on their football version (Fifa) editing and transfering players is much much easier even though the tranfers are 99% of the time up to date. There are also numbers of errors in player positions e.g Lewis Moody is now a Centre and Dan Ward Smith. There are many more mistakes like these. The lack of rights in the game is terrible e.g the French league and Magners league don't exist, and all the french clubs' players are muddled because they don't have the rights. Buying the rights for these leagues and players wold cost a fraction of what EA sports happily pays for exclusive rights for football leagues such as the Premiership, Serie A, La Liga and so on. It's the most disappointing game i've ever bought and I find it very disappointing that EA had the cheek to release it for 30 with so few changes and so many mistakes. EA don't care about rugby fans at all; they should keep to football games in future because that's all they care about.
