Addictive yet repetitive July 30, 2007 N. Thompson (Surrey, England) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
This game is one of the most addictive games i have played, the graphics are very decent, the controls are easy to understand and you are free to go where you want in the area. The damage is fun just to destroy the city and you get bonus features with stunts such as drifting. The few problems for me is that it is so repetitive, although that could have been expected with this style of game, as mentioned it is difficult to control the cars, and whenever you hit something you will usually either just stop and not be able to move or flip. It has a very short storyline and there are 5 levels with the Autobots, and as mentioned you cannot change the difficulty, which does pose a problem. My main moan about this game though is the fact that in each level you have the police and army always after you, with police cars constantly shooting at you, missles being launched from army buggies and loads of tanks appearing from nowhere. This gets very frustrating as you cant do much about them. Overall though, these problems may sound a lot, but the game is very addictive, and with the plot being slightly different to the Movie, you dont know what will happen next. If it was longer and you could choose your Transformer in each level, it would be a little better. Still, a very good game if you are a fan of Transformers, even if you have only seen the Movie.
AWESOME!! September 4, 2007 River (Wet Wales) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
i don't understand why people are bad mouthing this game. it is amazing. the graphics are amazingly beautiful and there is so much to do, even when the game is completed. yes the steering of the vehicles is a little awkward but after a while you get used to it. anyone who likes driving, shooting, fighting or destructive games should buy this game!
Great fun but has a few niggles... July 28, 2007 M. Simper (London) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
Having seen the film and been transported back to my youth I was keen to carry on the trip down memory lane. Being too old for the toys I figured I'd get the game. For the most part this is great fun, there's a 'Grand Theft Auto' freedom to the environments, you can go pretty much wherever you like and destroy whatever you like (even as an Autobot). It's easy to get the hang of the controls and you'll soon be transforming to your heart's content. To my shame I've played a stupid amount already and got quite far into the game both with the Autobots and Decepticons. It's been a laugh for the most part, but I've come across some maddening niggles... 1. Difficulty - there's no steady progression. I found myself stuck for ages on the second level, then blitzed through others later on. As a result to get good you have to replay levels again and again, rather than have your skill naturally built up as you go along. You'll understand when you have to take on Starscream AND Blackout at the same time with no prior experience of such tasks... 2. Camera angles! These have plagued many a PS2 game. At times it's impossible to get the thing to where you need it. 'Right, now if I can just get this last Decepticon... wait... where the hell is it?! More to the point where the hell am I? Oh. I'm dead.' 3. Driving controls. The oversteer is ridiculous! Every single Transfomer that becomes a road vehicle is an absolute nightmare to steer. Even Optimus Prime. I managed to put him into a 360 spin. Sigh. 4. Good grief, they're clumbsy! Picking stuff up and hurling it is fun most of the time, but at times it's crucial that you pull off throwing something at an opponent. Under pressure it's almost impossible to do because the darn bots are so clumbsy! Overall it's fun enough to keep you playing, but it can become a maddening experience quite quickly at times. If you're patient and/or love Transformers this game is for you!
Frustrating August 12, 2007 Mr. S. DAVIES (East Anglia, UK) 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
Firstly I can echo all the other reviews. It is a fun game to start with. I had not seen the film but saw a demo for a few seconds in a shop and it was on sale in another so I took the chance. From the start it was fun, easy controls and simple missions. There is scope to venture of course a little but because most missions are on a timer you can't go of very far. The car control is frustrating and every time you get a knock from the bad guys the camera faces the wrong direction. The MOST frustrating bit is in the third chapter your good guy fights two bad guys one after the other, then two at once and you can't win. Simple as that. Try driving away and they run after you just as fast, there's no point in having weapons because as soon as you fire they put up an impenetrable force field. If you can lock on after the camera has stopped spinning firing will hold them up but by the time you pick something up to throw the other one has attacked you. I almost threw the controller at the telly. Wait for the price to come down so you only pay for the levels you can complete.

Having seen the film I spotted this for 25 in Game, and was tempted in by the blurb on the back (play as any of an army of Transformers? I'm there). It's very, very misleading. While the graphics in this game are pretty slick, GTA with robots it ain't. The missions are VERY repetitive - drive / fly to an area, bash the Square button to melee the hell out of drone / building / enemy, transform, drive / fly to area, repeat ad nausea. It's especially bad with the Autobot missions because they are all cars. The Decepticon missions are by FAR more entertaining (the opening mission with Blackout was so much fun), but even so it does get old pretty quick. Another gripe is that there are a couple of bugs with the camera angles & programming. Quite often on the Bumblebee missions I would find myself chucked into a building by Barricade, only for the camera to get jammed under a nearby tree / building and for Bumblebee to simply get stuck midair. Along come the Decepticons, who smash the hell out of you while you're stuck, and you're dead. It's incredibly frustrating. All in all, it IS fun - the first time you do a mid-air Transform, or pick up a burning car and chuck it at an enemy, you'll feel like you can tear the whole world apart - but it gets old very, very fast. This isn't helped by the numerous glitches and bugs that interfere with play, and also the shocking lack of a multiplayer co-op or versus option. Heap on top of that the fact that the game is nowhere near as open as it claims to be - you can't choose your Transformer, it's all level-dictated, and while the worlds are open the only things to do in them really are the missions - and I can't help but feel let down. If you really can't resist, wait for it to go on sale - or buy the infinitely superior other Transformers game that came out a year or so ago. It's SO much better.
