Amazon.co.uk Review Proving that the best things in gaming life don't have to be in 3D, Guilty Gear X for the PlayStation 2 provides high-velocity 2D fighting thrills guaranteed to give you "PlayStation thumb" in double quick time. Hugely detailed manga-style fighters are presented for your battering pleasure in a game which boasts strong action levels and a story that's weaker than a kitten and revolves around a fighting competition--no surprises there, then. The basic premise takes a boatload of playable characters, including giant cyborgs and a rather interesting lady who uses her hair as a weapon--which is nice--and pits them against one another. As you would expect from a beat-'em-up there are literally dozens of different attacks to try out, together with some smart special moves which inflict huge damage on the opposition but require some serious practice to pull off. The soundtrack is typically guitar-heavy Japanese rock and the only real let down is in the speech department, with most of the major characters muttering almost incoherent threats to one another and an announcer who's so cheerful it's enough to make you sick. Listening to his annoying drivel is, however, a small price to pay for the brash graphical style and intelligent gameplay within Guilty Gear X, which should keep the ardent brawler amused for hours--or at least until you break your DualShock 2.--Chris Russell

Street Fighter just got a rival!!!! March 6, 2002 C. Wells (Lincs) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The Playstation 2's fighting area has just gotten a new addition to it's reasonably long line of beat 'em ups and after playing the first installment on the PSOne you'll wonder just by how much they've improved on what was a pretty average debut. If the mention of the words: 2D Beat 'em up immeditely means that Street Fighter springs to mind then be surprised and shocked and amazed all at the same time because Guilty Gear is definitely the worthiest contender to its throne since... well there hasn't been one really. Everything that you could want to assocaiate with Street Fighter is in the game, the balanced gameplay, the super moves... I could carry on comparing it to Street Fighter but I feel that I shouldn't because these are two completely different games with completely differing good and bad points. The immediate reaction you will have are the eye candy, tasty, yum-yum wicked, wicked graphics... Here's the analysis: THEY. ARE. SIMPLY. JAW-DROPPING. The animation is slick, the sprites are constantly high resolution, even when the camera moves in and out! With a few games, the resolution of the fighters seems to lessen when the camera moves back but here they remain pixel perfect and the no slowdown occurs at any point during the game. You'd have to have a really decrepid Playstation2 to suffer any slowdown in this game. The story of the game basically revolves around a fighting tournament held by the Gears who offer a reward to the winner of the tournament and... well, that's about it. The story is easily the weakest element of the game but it doesn't matter because every character has their own personality so no two characters are the same or feel the same and therefore you have 13 characters to master, which will easily take forever, and you'll have so much learning how to pull off all the moves! One feature that dogged the original was the inclusion of the Instant Kill move which could mean that the fight was over in the first move and I can safely say that this is not fun when the computer AI constantly churned the Instant Kill moves on YOU. Instead, this time the move can only be performed by pressing the four facia buttons at once and then performing the move, which at least gives you or your opponent a few seconds grace to stop the move happening and at least it only wins that round of the match so you get a second chance... providing you've not lost one bout already ;) There are so many things to do, so many things to see, so much fun to be had, it strikes you as unbelievable that anyone could make a game as good as Street Fighter (and better) and yet not have the words: STREET FIGHTER in the title. It's hip and it's definitely one of the most impressive titles aesthetically. You'll never play a 2D fighter quite like it!
Fantastic Anime Beat em up April 16, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my favourite game at the moment with fantastic graphics and great gameplay. Some my not enjoy it as much as street fighter but the combo system is more skill related than just button bashing. Plus there is an instant kill system which may be hard to pull off but it makes sense in a tournament in which bloodshed is alowed that there is the posibility of death. Unlike the first game this one has a difficulty setting so if this is your first play you can make it easy. All in all this is a fantastic game but is a aquired taste as at first it can be frustrating at how hard it can be but after practice you will agree Guilty Gear X is one of the best fighters around.
if you like the capcom fighters you have to get this! November 22, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
it is a fast paced fighter with 16 strange and bizare characters. the 2d characters look excellent on top of the high res backgrounds giving the game an especialy authentict feel. the moves are simple and easy to discover and with huge power attacks reminesent of the streetfighter brand it makes it a must have. but its unoriginality and easy difficulty level stops it from reaching its full potential. if you liked marvel vs capcom then buy this if not then rent it. it is worth a look at.
Not a Street Fighter beater, but a good try March 8, 2002 Guilty Gear X is a 2D PS2 fighter in a similar vein to Capcoms legendary Street Fighter series. In terms of style it's very similar to Darkstalkers/ Nightwarriors, with characters more powerful than the average Street Fighter, but not as spectacular as an X-Man. Graphically, it looks beautiful with excellent anime-style graphics throughout, although some of the animation, especially on certain backgrounds and some of the more inhuman characters, could have used a few more frames. The look of the graphics is very consistent, unlike the multi-styled look of Capcom vs SNK. Sound is also very good, with a typically Japanese prog-thrash soundtrack, and good voicing and incidental effects, with the exception of the announcer voice, which is ridiculous. The game has a supermove system similar to that in most games, with each character also having one hard-to-land 'instant kill' attack. The characters are many and varied, ranging from straightforward swordsmen and women to an ironclad giant, poolcue-armed fruitloop, and scalpel-wielding deluded maniac. All those I've played so far have been fun and accessible to use, with few useless or impossible to do moves. The main drawback of the game in single-player mode is the boss characters. Unlike the other characters who are well balanced, they are ludicrously overpowerful and can take hours to get past, removing the fun of a 'quick bash' even on very low skill levels. Overall though, if you love 2D fighters and don't mind a bit of extreme difficulty at the end, this just might be for you.
Guilty Gear X - Great Anime Fighter February 15, 2007 D. Topic (UK) If you've played your classics like 'Street Fighter' & 'Mortal Kombat' - back in the days of the Mega Drive, you'll love this game. I would reccomend it in that case or even if you want to try out a new fighting game (being bored of previous ones). However to remenber it's 2D & in Japanese Anime - a bit old school but great in a sense. The game is good graphically and visually with nice colours & high-resolution backgrounds making it a unique fighting experience. Things to point out however are controls are easy but to pull off better moves will take a bit of practise. It looks a bit of a kid's game even though it's a 15+ (why? a little animated violence & blood). To finish overall it's a great, fun game! I say this however because i'm a fan of Anime & cartoon-like fighting games. You decide (I would reccomend it anyhow).
