4 out of 5 stars Next Generation Tennis Review   July 23, 2002

Next Generation Tennis (NGT) is a step above all the other Tennis Sims on the playstation 2. What makes NGT different from all other Tennis games is that it has more game modes that you can shake a stick at. The game modes include career - where you enter the tournaments and compete against the top players (from the likes of Gustavo Kuerten, Todd Martin, Tim Henman etc.) After 10 seasons find out whether your a top player or a no-hoper. The other game modes include the classic exhibition mode, arcade mode, and even a race mode where you try to defeat as many computer players as quick as possible. The gameplay on this game is the best around! The graphics of this game are extremely realistic, the players look identical to their real-life counter-parts and the actions are realistic too, from Henman wiping the sweat of his brow to Kuerten's groans. The courts are a spitting image of their counterparts as Roland Garros and US Open owners gave their plans to Wanadoo and they made a great copy of the courts. The sound is another top factor of the game, from the french umpire announcing the scores in french to the mobile phones ringing in the crowd. This is the best tennis game you will find on the Playstation 2 at the moment, it is a must buy and you will be playing it well into the future!

This is a shambles of a tennis sim. The whole idea of a tennis game is be fun and exciting to play and yet it's boring and dumb and constantly frustrating.

The graphics are shaky. The movements may be fluent and well animated but in the replays they look stupid with players looking hunched and gormless and the movements are all the same. They walk with a zombified look on their faces and most of the time their heads are turned to the right and it looks daft. And the fist pumping action looks awful...

The sound is the best part of the game, the music is okay but the sound effects are good and the crowd's reaction to the plethora of shots your player makes is good with some calls of "go on BLAH!" but that's where my good comments stop...

The gameplay is DREADFUL. The dire controls are wasting the game's potential right from the off because everytime you try to hit a shot it takes the computer almost a second to respond making the job of returning a ball impossible. It's almost as though you have to hit the ball as soon as your opponent gives it a thwack which makes it impossible to even win a point let alone a match. And the chances of your player getting an ace on his serve? Well I won't even try to explain it without using the word impossible or pointless.

The games modes are wasted in a game like this and the footage of the players in the game is horribly limited. The basics of the game are good but they've wasted this opportunity and it's bad. BAD I TELL YOU!

And who exactly is Virginie Razzano? And I'm a tennis fan too!
