What a Disappointment!! November 23, 2007 Mr. Duncan James Hardy 21 out of 27 found this review helpful
I have been following the Microsoft Flight Simulator Franchise since MS Flightsim 5 on the DOS 6.2 OS. I can hand on heart say this is, in my opinion, the worst product I have purchased. The issues I have found so far include: 1) The need to re-install FSX as the addon would not recognise the fact that FSX was installed. 2) Constant crashing and hanging (I have not managed to get off the aircraft carrier on an F18 yet!). 3) The new keyboard layout to control arrester hook, launch bars, etc do not work and require manual entry. 4) Display issues include parts missing from aircraft therefore I end up flying the mustang without wings, engines and so forth. The only items displayed are the cockpit, pilot and wheels. This is the same for the helicopter; the 3d cockpit is not complete and gaps shown between gauges. 5) When flying the Red Bull mission at Longleat FSX tells the user that the aircraft has crashed and resets the mission when in fact the Extra 300 is approx 200 feet QFE flying straight and level. I am running this on Win XP SP2, with 2Gb RAM, 2 x GeForce 7800 GT SLI, AMD Athlon x2. After researching fixes on the web it would appear that many other users are experiencing the same issues above. My advice is to research before purchasing. Microsoft; what a disappointment!!
what a piece of junk November 16, 2007 pay to be a beta tester! 19 out of 30 found this review helpful
When I tried to install this I got the error message that I didn`t have an English version of FSX. What a load of crap. Pay 18 to be a Microsoft beta tester? No thanks. Not only that, the readme file on the disk says you should download a bunch of files to make sure FSX and the Acceleration pack runs smoothly - why aren`t these files included on the disk? Could it be customer care is non-existant with MS? If you think this is just a random "rant" check out the feedback for this on Amanzon US. Avoid.
Works well enough here! December 5, 2007 Michael Dalgleish (Staffordshire, England) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I don't have any of the problems with the Acceleration pack that the other reviewers describe. I can't help doubting the hardware they are using. The opposite really; the missions mostly work well, but best of all is that the game runs smoother than before- probably due to the inclusion of the service pack SP2. Racing is a tremendous addition to the game. For me though, the SDK is the best part, modding the game is often more fun than "normal play". Even with the rather fiddly proceedures involved in making scenery, custom buildings and changing the landscape, the satisfaction of making and sharing mods makes up for it. There is an enormous network of support sites and highly skilled techies out there that are willing to help got you started. ______________________________________________ For reference: PIV E6600, 2Gb DDRII RAM, GF8800 GTS 640MB graphics. 24" Dell screen. This Sim really does need the newest computers to run well!
Good game, but not enough variety in missions December 6, 2007 Mr. Grant W. Elliot (Preston, UK) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
I bought this for the extra missions. Did not have any problems installing the game, or with performance that some others are experiencing. The only fault with the missions is that there are too many helicopter or "air race" missions. I have also found with some missions that when you get to a waypoint/checkpoint, it doesn't register that you have reached it so doesn't tell you where to go next. The only way that I have found round this is to exit the mission then reload it from a previous save point. The winch on the helicopter missions is also far too difficult to use - you have to be too precise, and it is too difficult to judge where the winch cable end is. So far I have not yet managed to pick anything up, so cannot complete some of the missions!! - this is a flight simulator - in "real life" there would be a separate guy operating the winch, but in this simulation, everything is done by the pilot. Having said that, the helicopters are quite easy to fly (so long as you have taken the default tutorials provided on the basic FSX package)
nVidia users avoid at all costs December 16, 2007 Mr. I. A. Niblo 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
Title says it all. Buying Microsoft software is becoming a game of chance. In this case a quick glance at two of the main community forums (Simviation & Avsim) will show you that nVidia users are getting game freezes, system hangs and crashes to desktop. The frame rate increase (3 or 4?) is certainly not worth the hassle of having to use FSX in windowed mode while you try to remember never to use the menus without first pausing the game. Oh and the extra missions are great provided the game doesn't crash when you try to load one. All in all I'd say FSAcceleration was a cynical attempt to get early adopters to buy the now free Service Pack 2 which in itself was a cynical attempt to exploit customer disatisfaction and get people to upgrade to to DX10 (and therefore Vista). FSX works fine with SP1. Leave it at that or you'll end up writing 'Frankly I'm outraged' reviews like this one. Grrr.
