Great adventure game in a creepy setting. September 5, 2006 Bikerman 66 out of 75 found this review helpful
Do you like eerie ancient stone circles and monuments? Are you brave enough to explore dark, isolated woodlands at midnight? Have you ever wondered what primal forces may awaken on the Autumn Equinox (a powerful night in the pagan calendar)? If so, you will love Barrow Hill: Curse of the Ancient Circle. The game plays flawlessly on ALL Windows versions, is bug free, features a whole square mile of the eerie Cornish Countryside to explore, and is packed to rafters with challenging, ingenious and logical puzzles. If you are a fan of adventure, Celtic mythology or ancient monuments you really need to have this game. At under 13 you are getting a great bargain. Barrow Hill is easily one of the best games I have played recently, and is sure to keep you up at night, whether through fear or fascination.
Classic-style adventure game for all ages. March 23, 2007 Sir Gamer (London) 58 out of 60 found this review helpful
It's not often that I am able to play a good computer game with my children (aged 8 and 14), as too many recent titles contain pointless 'adult' material (read: puerile). Barrow Hill, although very creepy, does not contain any cruelty, blood or pointless gore. Instead, the designers have crafted a classic-style adventure game (some reviewers don't seem to understand what that is), which is perfectly balanced when it comes to clues and puzzles. If you want a few hours of mindless violence, go find something else, but if you prefer a well crafted, beautifully written adventure game (which provides approx 20 hours of non-linear gameplay) look no further. It's a great game to play alone, and even better with company. Unlike many other games, you won't bore your friends to death with endless button thumping, instead, you'll find they are as involved in the puzzle solving and exploration as you are. A rare treat! Barrow Hill is a great game for those who love the genre, others may want to stick with the arcade.
Fun Game July 1, 2007 Angus Konstam (Edinburgh, Scotland) 46 out of 48 found this review helpful
Barrow Hill restores the balance to 'point and click' adventure games. If you're bored with making war, killing things, city building, or wearing your fingers out from trying to reach the next platform... then you might enjoy this nicely done, (very atmospheric and slightly creepy), brain teaser. The puzzles are fun but not mind bending. The solutions are logical and make sense within the context of the game. A certain amount of reading is required but the various text add to the story and reveal many clues. Be warned, a couple of inventory items are well hidden. I wouldn't say there's any 'pixel hunting', but it's important to see the whole game, every screen. The music and voice acting add to the spooky environment. This game does a good job of playing on our fears of 'things that go bump in the night'. I appreciated that there was a choice of endings. Playing this game a second time might reveal interesting bits that could be missed the first time around. This is a first time effort from independent producer Shadow Tor and I'm looking forward to their next release.
A great adventure game with super puzzles and chilling atmosphere. August 4, 2006 Celtic Gamer (Avalon) 43 out of 48 found this review helpful
I was more than happy to be surprised by this detailed, intelligent and exciting adventure game. Stone Circles, like Stonehenge, have always been misrepresented in games. They are too often used as portals to hell, or exhibit childish connections to UFO's and aliens. With Barrow Hill you get a realistic stone circle, in a realistic setting with a fantastical story and great puzzles. For once I did not find myself stumped or stuck on a single puzzle, as is the case with many adventure titles. So, what was so different? Well, there's the huge play area which is 75% non-linear. Yes, that's right! You can play the game at your own pace, solve puzzles in any order and soak up the atmosphere at your own pace. The styling of the game is suitable for the genre, but wouldn't impress those looking to boast about their big rigs and ultra expensive gfx cards. Instead, those looking for a good story, some brain activity and a detailed world with have no problems getting sucked into a surprising, inventive and moving story. For a game set around a group of old rocks, in an unassuming English village this is top adventure stuff! I look forward to seeing what Shadow Tor Studios come up with next.
Fantastic Adventue with Megalithic Site August 6, 2006 Pedro (England) 34 out of 40 found this review helpful
An excellent gripping game based around the archaeology of Bronze Age Megaliths , Standing stones, Cornish Celtic Myths, & "Holy" Wells. It explores various "intepretations" of the meaning of these ancient sites. Fantastic interplay with the local Radio Station and it's superb humourous Radio Adverts (in the English version). The artwork and scene rendition is outstanding and a credit to the artistic talent of Matt Clark. Superb Sound and Foley effects. It can be replayed several times, each time using an alternative "route" to get to the true ending.
