A real shame April 8, 2007 A. Brown (Wales, UK) 44 out of 57 found this review helpful
Having played Halo 2 on the X-box when it first came out, I can vouch for it being both fun and immensely addictive. Playing through the single player campaign is good on its own, but co-operative mode and multiplayer are where the game really comes alive. It's a real shame then that co-operative mode has been ripped out and that, a first for PC gaming, multiplayer services will be charged for. Add to this the insane decision to restrict the game to Vista; the graphics have been improved somewhat but in no way approach DX10 or even moderately-high DX9 levels. So why buy a version that has less features, hidden costs, and requires you to shell out for a whole new operating system when you could buy an x-box and the original version for around [...]? Well, some might argue that Vista is an inevitable purchase. That may be so, but gamers shouldn't be arbitrarily forced into purchasing something they don't need to run the game. Great game, terrible marketing agenda.
Basta Microsoft...! September 27, 2007 NeuroSplicer (Freeside, in geosynchronous orbit) 37 out of 45 found this review helpful
The Original Halo was a ground-breaking title. The expectation for HALO2 was so great that Microsoft decided to greedily milk its own users... PC users have been waiting for HALO2 to be released for Windows for over 3 years. Now is too little, too late. Not to mention the shameless WinVista promotion. All these years Microsoft was dragging its feet. Why? The release of (compatibility-hell) WinVISTA was coming - and HALO2 was planed to boost sales. Then WinVISTA got repeatedly delayed - and so was Halo 2. RESULT: In 2004 the graphics were cutting edge, in 2007 they are just presentable. Even though the game requires an above average (and quite expensive) Hardware configuration, it actually looks worse than UNREAL TOURNAMENT 2004. QUESTION: why is HALO2 only compatible with WinVISTA since it does NOT take advantage of DirectX10? ANSWERS : (1) let's help sell those WinVISTA finally!; (2) there are hardly any affordable DirectX10-compatible video-cards available; (3) let's charge the users for playing OnLine with WindowsLIVE!! The gameplay and overall presentation is not that different from the original Halo. Sure, surfaces got better textured, shiny reflections got added and now (limiting and clumsy) dual-yield is available - but do these actually make a difference to a real gamer? It is truly a shame that PC users get exploited in such shameless way. After all, HALO3 is getting released for X-BOX. Wow! We get the privilege of playing the previous generation game! Aren't we lucky...
A slap in the face. September 9, 2007 Fyrburn (UK) 32 out of 47 found this review helpful
I'm giving this one star for the following reasons: 1) The graphics show no inclination of being any better than the xbox version as far as I can see. Direct X 10 is not necessary at all. 2) No game for PC I have ever seen before has been necessary to require a new windows. Games are still being produced that are Windows 98 compatible. It's a gimmick to sell a buggy operating system that nobody who knows what they are doing will look at until it has at least one service pack. 3) Games For Windows Live? Paying to play games online? If it's anything like Xbox live, no thanks. PC Gaming has been doing online play better for nearly 2 decades now. 4) Some dude below me gave it 5 stars simply becaue other people were giving it lower reviews purely to bump it back up. So I'll oblige and bump it back down again.
This game is great! May 31, 2007 machineman9 (UK) 22 out of 56 found this review helpful
firstly, it is really annoying that people are having a go at it for being only on Vista. if nothing was put onto the next OS, then we would still be stuck back at DOS. The graphics are great and it runs brilliantly. it is great fun making maps all over again if you have vista, this is a must buy. if you dont have vista, then stop whining and get it. nothing will always stay on XP... techonology is moving along so keep up!
Halo 2 For Windows XP August 18, 2007 P. Holloway (England) 22 out of 32 found this review helpful
For all those who hate windows Vista, and (alike I) wanted to play Halo2 without funding Microsoft further by purchasing it, need only search in google for applications to enable the game to play on Windows XP, oh and by the way, it runs faster on XP, too :)
