Amazon.co.uk Review In a nutshell: One of the most respected Western role-playing games of all time is back with huge improvements in graphics and accessibility, including a completely real-time combat system and the largest, most detailed game world ever seen. Phew. The lowdown: Although previous Elder Scrolls games have enjoyed something of a like it or loathe it reputation, this latest sequel has the means to appeal to everyone thanks to one simple improvement: its incredible new graphics. Unlike many role-playing games it is viewed from a first person perspective, with a game world portrayed in a staggering amount of detail, and realistic psychics and characters that genuinely seem to be going on about their own separate lives. The game's real appeal though lies in the huge freedom: play it exactly how you want. Most exciting moment: Using the new combat engine to fight off dozens of enemies, then stealing one of their mounts and riding off into the sunset. Since you ask: Emperor Uriel Septim VII is voiced by Star Trek and X-Men luminary Patrick Stewart, but all the characters in the game have full spoken voiceovers instead of just onscreen text. This is the next generation, you know. The bottom line: One of the most realistic and accessible role-playing games ever made. Harrison Dent

Hold your horses... August 20, 2005 121 out of 191 found this review helpful
As far as I'm aware, no-one should have played this game yet except the developers. Beware any false reviews. That said, I for one am foaming with excitement about this upcoming event. Check out some of the web-sites devoted to the Elder Scrolls for more reliable information (such as www.elderscrolls.com), where you can learn about this masterpiece in great detail. And if you haven't already, play Morrowind first. I challenge you to complete it before Oblivion is released....
updates on oblivion November 10, 2005 AC (behind this screen) 70 out of 338 found this review helpful
This is the 3rd review I write about this game (sorry, i can't stop) and i keep bringing updates about the game(read my first reviews, or the other reviews if you wan't to know more): The game oblivion happens in Cyrodiil, capital province of Tamriel. This game features all new graphics, and many weak points from MORROWIND have been reviewed and altered: _being a thief is no longer impossible. You can now be an theif or an assassin, and easily get away with it. The stealth part of the game has been totaly remade. Use the shadows to hide, create distraction for the guards, and sneek in, steal or murder. _Magic has been also remade: Mages are now much more powerfull: Magic is now much easier to use than in the previous Elder scrolls. It's more powerfull, more fun, and it's easier to cast speels. no more fighter's always win!!! _In this game, unlike in Morrowind (which was still an exelent title I recommended to those who don't have it)it is now possible to buy houses, to own horses. you can even lock up your house to keep NPC's to sneek in and steel. _travel throught beautiful countrysides, admire the beauty this artificial nature. _More than 300 hours of play with 1 character (you'll at least wan't to make 3) _ this is obviesly the game of the yea, then RPG for the next generation. Further updates as the time goes...
beyond increadable November 1, 2005 AC (behind this screen) 58 out of 253 found this review helpful
I, like many others, have been waiting for 4 years for this game to come out. This will most certainly be the game of the decade. If you want to learn more, visit www.theelderscrolls.com to download the demo videos and see the screen shots. All fans of Morrowind, including myself are litteraly bursting with exitment. This new TES instalement includes: _creating a character from ground up with the face you want. Choose between 10 unique races includiong humans, dark elfes, argonians and others. _Master the weapons you choose. _Be a generous paladin or an evil sorcerer, or steel for your own benefit _join guilds. You are not obliged to follow the main quest. _explore all of Cyrodil, (over 16 square miles of forest and cities to explore) _Over 1500 NPC (non playable charaters) have their own 24/7 schedules including eating, sleeping, stealing... _more than 9000 interactable objects _The most beautiful graphics ever seen in a videogame (stones reflect light if humid) and the most beatiful landscapes ever seen on PC (download the E3 videos on theelderscrolls.com). _new intuitive combat system which brings magic and blocking under your control _you can now own property and horses... _this is but a few of the things you will find in Oblivion.Oblivion...do want you want to do.

Simply Stunning April 7, 2006 Richard Kelly (Manchester, England) 38 out of 44 found this review helpful
I've had the game for a week or so now and it is simply stunning! The idea of the game is to give you a totally free form RPG and to fit a story line on top of that that you can choose to follow of you want. From the start of the game you get a feeling that this is something just a bit different (unless of course you played Morrowind in which case it is very familiar). If you've followed the progress of the game during development you will realise that you start off in a prison and the emperor comes through your prison cell and at that point your game starts. You follow the emperor and you can choose to branch off and follow a small scale dungeon and it is your choices here that get the computer to select a character class based on your style of play - obviously you can completely disreguard the choice and select a different class or make your own. You no longer have to walk around as much as you did in Morrowind for two reasons. One is horses, you get from a to b fast on a horse and there are various different types of horses to be purchased near the different towns. The second reason is fast travel, if you have been to a location before you can select the location and travel there instantly in game time. All the guilds are there (fighters, mages, thieves, dark brotherhood) and you can still do missions to advance within them, but the way in which you join all bar the fighters guild has changed. You need to FIND the thieves guild and pass an initiation before you can join. For the mages guild you need 6 recommendations prior to advancement and for the dark brotherhood you need to commit muredr BEFORE you can join. There is also an area where you can fight to the death for fame, glory and money...and if you look hard enough you may also find soem other factions to join The graphics are a delight to behold, I've got a radion 850 XT graphics card P4 3.2GHz 1GB RAM and it plays everything on high resolution quite happily at 1024x768. The reflections off the water are great, and some of the lighting effects are amazing. As with all these types of free form games you must talk to the people around you to pick up side quests that will keep your skills improving. The voice acting is also pretty good as well. Combat is now much more involved. You now have to choose to block (rather than it being based on your block skill) and strike at the right moments in the fight and you can also cast spells at any time without having to change to the casting position (be aware that if you cast you cannot block at the same time). The quest system is now stunningly simple to follow. You have a list of available quests that you have found, you then select the one that you want to be active and you get a marker on the compass to show you the direction to head in - you still must be able to find the location, but you don't need to wander for days looking for a door on an island off the coast like I did in Morrowind whilst looking for a particular dungeon for one quest. It sounds like it kills some of the enjoyment, but is doesn't. Most of the reviews on here mention the features that are new, but none of them mention the gameplay. To put it honestly this is the most addictive game I have played in ages. It is a completely involving experience and I imagine that I will be playing it through a few times with different character classes already. This is a must buy game, BUT you must like your free form adventure games - if you cannot get your head around doing what you want, wandering aimlessly looking for things to do and just looking for dungeons for plunder then this is not for you. If you loved Morrowind then BUY IT NOW!!! A simply stunning 10/10.
