Best game in years November 28, 2003 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
When I first downloaded the demo of Trackmania from the French developers Nadeo, I judged by the size of the zipfile, that it would be a shareware kind of game that would amuse me for a couple of hours or so, while waiting for big titles such as KOTOR, or Halflife 2. I've played the demo since, mostly online, but also the single-player modes, which are a perfect mix between tetris or some other great puzzle game, my childhood toy of dreams -the Scalextric, and a stuntracing game. I'm addicted. It feels just like sitting with the other kids in the sandbox, shouting at each other, playing wildly, except the kids are sitting in a larger sandbox, and the stunts are a lot cooler. Now that I've played the whole game, I'm even more impressed. this is what computer games, hey, all games, are about. Playing, using one's creativity, making skins and circuits for the world to share. I'ts great. I'd give this game a good 11 out of 10, were it possible.
TrackMania - the best game I have ever played in 20 years February 11, 2004 V. Thorn (United Kingdom) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This game is quite simply superb. I'd give it 10 out of 5 if I could.You drive your car through crazy roller-coaster style tracks, with bends, loop-the-loops, jumps over canyons, etc. There are 3 environments the desert being the best. The beauty of the game is you can build your own tracks in minutes with mountains, hills, trees. Within a second the game magically transports you into a 3D world that you just created. You can download hundreds of tracks built by customers and the files are only about 10K IN SIZE. The cars roll, flip, crash differently everytime, and you can drive anywhere in the environment. See www.trackmaniagame.com for examples of the tracks that can be downloaded. They are being added in 10’s every day. The game is so addictive. Even people that don’t typical like video games that I have shown it too, are impressed by this game. Buy it, you won’t regret it!
Fun with a capital "Phu" March 26, 2004 Martin Whatley (Newcastle, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a very good game to whittle away a few hours away with.Creating your own tracks is relativly simple, and downloading others via the developer's website is simple. Online, aside from a few issues which should be sorted out in patches coming soon, is very enjoyable even on a 56K, but where Trackmania really shines is with same-PC multiplayer. Having your mates crowd around you while your car plummets to its doom bring back the glory days of playing Worms. Simgle player is ok, but can get tiring after a while, the only reason to continue is to unlock extra pieces for use in creating own tracks. This can be frustrating if you just want to get straight into making tracks, but after an hour or so of playing solo you should have enough pieces to create good tracks. Besides you can always cheat anyway...
Drive like the Dukes of Hazzard June 27, 2004 S. Greig (Guildford, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a pure arcade racer, no doubt about it - if you are looking for simulation then try Toca Race Driver 2 or Live for Speed, this game is in the arcade genre like Need for Speed Underground and GTA3. But with a difference...The difference is, this game allows you to create your own tracks using the supplied building blocks and then you get to race on them! Everything is against the clock, all of the other cars are ghost cars so the element of competitiveness is not quite as good as if you were racing against other cars that you could ram off the road or scupper an opponents race. Shame. The tracks supplied with the game are very different and the range of different stunt ramps, jumps, loops etc is pretty good. Its worth downloading the free "Power Up" add on pack that patches the game and gives away a load of new building blocks and stuff. The official TrackMania website also has loads of tracks and things to download. Included in the game are the following types of game: - Single player Series - This is a set of tracks for you to progress, you only get to race the next track until you have beaten a set time. Winning races unlocks track building blocks for you to build your own tracks. It also allows you to win "coppers" the in game currency so finance your new tracks. - Single Player Puzzle - This gives you a start point an and end point and you have to build a track to reach the end in a set time limit, requires a lot of lateral thinking! - Single Player Survival ("Power Up" add on) - In this mode, you keep racing until you come last out of four racers - Multiplayer (same computer) - Allows you to take turns with your makes to try and get the fastest time - Multiplayer (LAN & Internet) - Allows you to take on other players on different computers. There does not seem to be a massive online following but you can always get a race online when you want it. The Graphics are pretty good - nothing too taxing but still fairly good - the scenery can look a bit sparse at times but you ought to be concentrating on the track! The sound is OK, the engine effects are alright but the in game music is very annoying. This game harks back to the old Stunt Car Racer I had on my ZX Spectrum. They have done an excellent job recreating the fun in that game so I give this game 4 stars because even though its worth buying I don't think it has the staying power.
Trackmania=Addictimania! February 5, 2005 Ali (n.i) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am surprised this game was not very commercial as it would be so much more popular if people had've heard about it.It was a mere chance I found out about it, and eagerly welcomed it into my life. Trackmania is a far more intellegent game than people think. Most people assume that it is "boring" because the fun is gained from creating a track to drive along and then, driving along it. The loops, the ramps, the speed, the twitst and the turns, the adrenaline! This game is for the brighter gamers simply because, your interest is exercised by the interest of the levels you make (dumb people can't make fun levels). Don't let that put you off though, I'm sure once you get into it you'll think outside of the box.I do warn you though, you cannot get the best out of trackmania if you don't have access to the internet as you can download newer versions with new pieces for the editor, new car skins, e.t.c As my title implies this game is very addictive.I am stuck on Trackmania and have been since i purchased it half a year ago.I greatly await the sequel to it being released in March and hope it is as good as it looks. I know it will be.Eat my face.
