Amazon.co.uk Review
Word junkies beware--Ubi Soft's latest version of Scrabble will have you tongue-tied and sitting at your computer for hours on end as you battle your spelling wits against others or the computer.

The Scrabble board is simple and clear--the options that are available to you are all there at the click of the mouse. This is a comprehensive version of Scrabble and no option is left unturned.

But it is not just scrabble that this game offers and Ubi Soft has done well to expand the game further by adding five other gaming modes including duplicate mode, conundrum, and anagram. Also included is a game for the hardened Scrabble fan, where you have a certain number of rounds to achieve a certain number of points from a game that is half way through.

In comparison to your first person shooters or real time strategy games, the graphics of this delightful title may seem slightly simple--they are however very polished, presenting you with a menu system and game play that are both easily understandable.

Unlike the Sierra card and board gaming titles that see you pit yourself against the likes of aliens and cowboys, this scrabble is firmly suited to the more serious player. This is shown with the accompanying classical soundtrack it gets you straight into the mood for that word showdown with friends and family. --Jason Denwood

4 out of 5 stars 'Scrabble To Buy & Try The New Interactive Scrabble'   January 6, 2003

Another Edition of 'Scrabble' for the PC - 2003. It was only last year that a new one was brought out again, but this time the Makers have finally got the game back to almost as it was originally(none of those annoying little people calling out 'Yaa Hoo' !!!)For the first time ever it contains 'The Official Word List' playable on line. You can challenge the computer or friends with a classic game, or link up to the Unique Multiplayer Features that allows up to 4 people to play on a Local Network & face 4 people on the Internet. There are also 5 other games to play too.Much more modern but older people may still prefer the plainer 1999 edition even without all the goodies. Unfortunately it is very hard to find this copy now & this is the next best thing.Compatible with the following systems: 98-2000-ME-XP.
PS. The Classical Music(optional)playing while you relax & play is very soothing. Hope you enjoy your game.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing   February 26, 2003

I am disappointed with this game. Although I will continue to play it because I enjoy playing Scrabble, there are many problems that let this game down.

DIRECTX - BAD CHOICE.

Personally I don't think DirectX graphics are the best way to do this game. Instead, standard Windows could have been used. This would probably have made the product much easier to use and would have been quicker to develop freeing the developers to add more functionality and improve usability.

QUICKSTART DOES NOT SAVE SETTINGS AFTER YOU QUIT THE GAME.

Because a game of Scrabble can take around half an hour, many people will just have one game then quit the application. Unfortunately, when you re-start the application and select QuickStart, the settings from the previous game are not carried over. They only appear to be carried over when you have more than one game in any one session. Oddly enough, if you don't select QuickStart when starting the first game, the CPU level defaults to whatever it was in the previous game before quitting.

POOR USABILITY

There are a number of weaknesses with this products usability:

- Cumbersome mechanism for dragging and dropping the tiles. Rather than placing the tile on the board when you release the mouse button, as you would expect, you have to actually click the mouse button again to release. This problem also exists when rearranging your tiles on the rack.

DOESN'T SAVE BOARD LAYOUT.

In my opinion, most people will after a while always use the overhead view of the board.

However, the game defaults to a 3D view and if you change it to the overhead view, this preference is not saved between games. Also with the overhead view, by default you cannot view the whole board so you have to drag bits of it you can't see into view (although you can zoom in and out using the + and - keys).

TILS ARE RANDOMLY REARRANGED

If you for example, play a 7-letter word but then the computer rejects it, rather than placing the tiles in the order they were originally on your rack, it kindly randomly rearranges them for you.

ONLY BASIC FUNCTIONALITY

Although Scrabble 2003 does provide a number of games, most people will usually play Scrabble.

Unfortunately, the developers wasted too much time on annoying animations using DirectX. Time which in my opinion could have been better spent on improving the usability of the product and
Adding additional features. For example, the ability to have a post match analysis of the game where the game is stepped through and best moves compared with actual moves and improved statistics.

MEANINGLESS STATISTICS

Again because of the use of DirectX, the game statistics are harder to read and understand.

Other problems with the statistics:

- It tells you what the best word you have played in each game is without mentioning how many points it was worth. Better to have a list of the best words, with the score for each.

- It tells you how many games you have won and lost regardless of the opponent CPU level.

Better to break down the wins and losses into the different CPU levels and human players.

Anybody could repeatedly play CPU level 1 and attain a 100% win record.

- Would be good if it had a record of all the games you have played including the ability to trace through that game. Again functionality more easily achieved with a proper Windows user interface, not the inappropriate DirectX.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Software Ever Bought   March 18, 2003

I have an older Hasbro version of the game which my wife and I have used for many happy hours. I decided to buy the 2003 version, thinking I would get an improved product to run on our new system with Windows XP. In fact everything about the game is worse. The user interface is so sluggish, the board is poor (no labels to show you which squares are double score etc), and there is much less useful infomation - eg it doesn't show what your current word would score as you build it up. I can't get my money back, but I can at least warn other people not to waste theirs on this dreadful software. I have now re-installed the old version and will continue to use it, in spite of a few minor windows compatibility problems.

A fair review of this game - its generally good, but it does have a few annoying points:

I initially had trouble loading the program, it said I needed an 'Indeo' codec, (costing over a tenner) which i thought sounded a little strange after spending 20 quid on the software!! It turns out, the codec is needed only for the openning animation thingy and not for the actual game! (How strange! Anyways, the problem can be solved by downloading a patch from the Ubisoft website, ubi.com, which also fixes a few other bugs with the software.

The tiles also like to jump around and avoid the mouse when you are trying to click them - there is some auto-rearange thing that happens if u click and hover over, so you have to click again to switch it off - rather annoying!

Another thing, and I am being rather picky here, but, rather than clicking down to drag the tile, then unclicking to drop it, you have to click it down, then up, then to drop, you have to click it down then up again! Like I say, small thing, but can be quite annoying!

These aside, it is actually quite a good game, the mini games are quite fun... for about 5 minutes, but quickly get very boring, but they are extras, so you can't really complain!

The graphics are VERY heavy and the program does consume a lot of disk space, so it will struggle on older computers (the readme even suggests you close all other programs before playing the game!) - its a shame there's no option to play a simplified graphics (runs in a window) version, so you can play it while doing other things - chatting to people etc.

The background 'music' is less than tranquil and you'll soon be switchin it off! it just annoys you - trust me!

As for the network and internet plays - I have had alot of trouble with the network game - it just tends to stop abruptly with no real reason (could just be my network though) so instead i just log both the comps onto the internet lobby and do it that way which isnt much of a problem because there's never anyone else on there anyway! not very good if your wanting somebody to play with though!

As I said, its all in all good game, with a few niggles, but them aside not bad at all!

2 out of 5 stars Not a good update   October 8, 2003

I tend to agree with the negative comments about this version.

For what should be quite a simple game it makes demanding use of graphics more appropriate for an action game. As a result unless you have got a high spec PC it will either not run at all or runs very slowly.

There are also some design problems, e.g. the hint panel hides hints on the righthand side of the board.

In order to run this on a not very old laptop I am having to get an earlier edition 2nd hand.

Sorry ubisoft - just because you can make extensive use of DirectX 3d does not mean you have to!
