Lego Racers 2

However, when I relented I was amazed at how much fun the game actually is. Yes it looks fantastic with great environments and imaginative LEGO models, but there is so much more. The track design is incredible, with subtle nuances to almost every track, especially in the first 2 worlds. The only complaint about the racing would be that the AI cars sometimes gets a bit stuck. The game is also full of interesting cut scenes which are well structured and often amusing (especially the toilet at the fire station).

Roll on LEGO Racers 3.

We recently bought the much anticipated Lego Racers 2, due to the success of Lego Racers 1. Our 3 year old boy loved playing Lego Racers 1, either with one of us watching him or with one of us playing against him in two-player mode. The gameplay is excellent fun, the graphics and music v.good, whilst the game being challenging for both young and old. He can operate LR1 by himself using the mouse in the menu system and is proficient with the steering wheel, thrills 'going into space' after collecting enough white and green bricks, not to mention he always thinks he wins at the end!!!

Whilst LR2 appears to be a more advanced game, it has been developed by a different company(?) so it is not necessarily an upgrade from the original creators of the game. For example, the building of your driver and car using Lego bricks is graphically much better and more fun in LR1. More to the point LR2 lacks gameplay, and for a young player (3 years+) has a number of frustrating flaws compared with LR1 making it one to avoid buying:

- A young player won't be able to navigate through the menu system especially because it doesn't use the mouse.
- It is too easy to stray off track by missing a few gates, and you end up never finishing.
- If you crash too much you eventually have to start walking and again you end up never finishing (again)
- The game is v.slow to startup and load new races is v.slow compared with LR1 (and yes, we do have a fast computer)
- There is a lot of silly chatting with racing opponents which doesn't add to the game, only delays the start of the race.

Disappointing...but buy Lego Racers 1 instead.

I bought this for my (8 year old) son 3 days ago and haven't seen him since. He has been totally immersed in the game and hasn't even come up for air. From what I can see of it, Lego Racers 2 is graphically more interesting and sophisticated than its predecessor. For example bits can fly off the racing cars and can be replaced at certain points around the track - forget to fix your car or get invloved in a serious smash and your driver ends up running. The race tracks are varied and often spectacular.
One word of warning. The various planets visited by your character are cunningly themed to match real world Lego sets on sale at your local toyshop (Adventures, Arctic, Life on Mars etc). Be prepared for a good deal of Pester Power.
Great game though.

Those expecting Racers 2 to be a few more tracks to race on after completing Lego racers are in for a surprise. True, you can just race on the tracks against AI cars like racers but the main game is an adventure in which you have to go exploring, talk to characters, find bonus, levels, etc. As you progress through the adventure, you visit different worlds and get involved in a number of races. The out and out mayhem of Lego racing is still there and the controls are still easy to use (just a few extra keys to press) but there are no short cuts - in fact there are now gates which you must pass through. Other than that anything goes. Powerups are slightly different in that you don't know what the powerup is going to be until after you have picked it up. Also all powerups (except one) have two uses - standard and advanced. As you progress around the track, bits of your car fall off - lose too many and you end up walking. The same happens to your opponents. Apart from playing the adventure and racing, a great part of the game is the extreme off-roading you can do as you explore the various worlds. You can build your own car or use standard parts. As you progress, you get given more advanced car parts, and completion of bonus levels allows you to boost your cars grip, power, and shields. You also need to collect gold bricks to allow you to travel to the other worlds and finally compete against rocket racer. This game is fairly demanding on your PC as well. I had to upgrade my graphics card to get a smooth display while racing. You need it because the cars bounce around all over the place as you race and you need to be quick on the controls to correct a bump or skid.

My son has had this game since he was three. At three he had some trouble controlling the cars, but gradually mastered it.

Together, we completed the adventure in a few weeks, but each level opened up a new world for him to race in in arcade mode, which he loved.

He's now 5 but still plays this more than virtually all of his other games combined. I really enjoy playing two player mode with him too. I used to let him win, but now I can rarely beat him. He takes great pleasure in blowing my car apart with a well aimed shot!

I'd recommend this for any 4+ year old, although younger kids will probably need help finding everything in adventure mode. But don't worry about that - you'll enjoy it immensely!
