Amazon.co.uk Review The latest in an increasing population of hybrid-genre games, Monolith's Rage of Mages 2: Necromancer combines elements of real-time strategy, a la Command and Conquer, and role playing, a la Baldur's Gate, to create an experience that aspires to be the best of both worlds (but reigns supreme over neither). Still, Rage of Mages 2, a sequel very similar both visually and gameplay-wise to its predecessor, features enough depth to satisfy those searching for a tad more action in their role-playing adventure.Players assemble a steadfast group of warriors and wizards and venture on over 40 different quests. Like many role-playing games, Rage of Mages 2 offers in-depth control over your party members--you can equip them with hundreds of different weapons, items and spells. Rage of Mages 2 most resembles a strategy game during the frequent party movement and combat situations; real-time strategy veterans will recognise the mouse-driven, quick-click battle scenarios. Rage of Mages 2 also includes many of the interface shortcuts, such as hot-key grouping and formations, implemented in nearly all real-time strategy games. During the quests, you will encounter nearly 80 different enemy creatures, including druids, necromancers, shamans and the obligatory skeletons and zombies. The variety of quests keep the action interesting and extensive multiplayer options provide hours of group-player enjoyment. --Doug Radcliffe

Rage of Mages September 28, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
An engaging, well-thought out game, simplified to let gamers game for the sake of adventuring without resorting to complexities like managing your spell books and whether or not your sack is full. Rage of Mages 2: Necromancer looks like it will be a good choice for both Warcraft fans who have a yen for role playing, and a good play for those die-hard Baldur's Gate fans as well.
I (still) love this game! January 5, 2006 Dozza (Hampshire, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It's pretty dated by now and fades a bit alongside hardcore RPGs, or even the highly accessible Dungeon Siege but I still really love this game. I have played ROM 1 at least four times and ROM 2 twice, prefered the first one and maybe will play it a fifth time some day soon! ROM 2 is still excellent though and has some nice new beasties like the skeletons and zombies. I like its easy point-and-click control (like DS) and its easy character development. There is something very satisfying about getting your characters to the end fully kitted out in crystal armour. Or do you sacrifice their individual experience gathering in favour of assembling an army of mercenaries? Characters also get better the more they practice their skills - like your wizard (in ROM 1) who you have to teleport back and forth a short distance until he has gained enough experience to reach the island that is too far away at the time when he finds the spell. So many combinations, plenty of replay. Another good point is the limit of around a dozen magic spells - that's all you need, not the hundreds your get in hardcore RPGs. The only let-down (irritation!) is the acknowledging 'Yes Commander?' every time you select a character. I can feel play #5 coming on, shall I go with sword, axe, bow, club or pike this time...?
