Amazon.co.uk The Locust Horde is back and only you and your squad of elite soldiers stand between them and the death of every human being on the planet Sera. In Gears of War 2, entire cities are being destroyed in single attacks, and you must take the fight to the Locusts by battling them in their own underground lairs. You can play the whole of story mode with a friend | The Boomer enemies are back in many different varieties | The game’s ethos of “destroyed beauty” is still in full effect | Shoot the Ticker enemies before they explode in your face | The bestselling third-person shooter is back: bigger, better, and gorier than ever before. But you can't just blast your way through it--this game requires far more tactics and cunning than your usual mindless shooter. A refined cover system means you can use the enemy as “meat shields” as well as hide behind the fully destructible scenery. The graphics are looking better than ever, and the game is purposefully more bloody and violent than before. The story and characterisation has also been improved, making this an action game sequel with brains as well as brawn. Key Features - Brothers in arms: Have a friend join or leave your single player game whenever you want, and even battle together on different difficultly levels.
- Evolving enemies: You finally get a chance to take down the giant Brumak enemies, as well as even larger monsters and new creatures, such as the explosive Ticker.
- Practise makes perfect: Practice the multiplayer mode on your own with computer controlled “bots”--then use the new matchmaking system to find a real opponent of the same skill level.
- Chainsaw massacre: If you loved the chainsaw bayonet in the original game, you now can duel computer or human opponents with gaming’s messiest weapon attachment.
- Hordes of options: Try the new five-player Horde mode, where you all face off against an unending wave of enemies, or any of the seven other multiplayer modes.
About the Developer: Epic Games Based in North Carolina, Epic is well known for games such as Unreal Tournament and Gears of War. They also make the Unreal Engine graphics technology, which is used by many other companies in many different games.

Gentleman Start your Chainsaws! November 6, 2008 UnluckyBauer007 (York England) 22 out of 29 found this review helpful
As my Xbox Amazon Clan friend's can confirm I got a copy this truly amazing game last night and I don't think there will be many people on the fence about this game as it is arguably the biggest exclusive game of year ....unless little Sack boy takes the world by storm that is?. Anyway ....... I don't think there are any Xbox owners out there that have not played the brilliant Gears of War (1) it was the one of the best 3rd person action games I have ever played! BUT it did have its flaws a far too short single player experience and an almost non existent story! If this really effected anyone's enjoyment of Gears 1 then you will be glad to know they are the main areas EPIC games have improved this time around. Gears 2 has been promised to have a good 2 hours on the game length of Gears 1 and a far more fleshed out story and having playing just an hour of the single player, I can confirm that EPIC have certainly seemed to have made good on the latter. These promises are not the only improvements on Gears 2 the rest are very subtle to begin with...... the game opens with a narration by locust Queen bragging that the lightmass bomb from the end of Gears 1 had done nothing more than kill a few of them and well "annoy " the rest.. So the locusts are just as strong as ever and are still attacking! The first act see's Marcus, Dom and the gang in a hospital that is under attack by locusts.... Now from this opening level you could be forgiven to thinking that this was exactly the same as Gears 1 and hold no new surprises. BUT- After this short epilogue and GEARS OF WAR 2 logo is displayed on the screen, you start the next act and the real sequel emerges! The start of the next act shows why this is not Gears 1.5 its Gears x 10 ...... the scale of this game is amazing as are the set pieces, the graphics are just stunning and so colourful, they make Gears1 look dull! The main game play has really took the idea of "What saint broke don't fix it" yes you wont need and training levels here (although there is a chance to train a rookie if you wish). This game uses al the strengths from Gears 1 and builds on it, there is slightly wider range of weaponry, and the guns (including the brilliant lancer) seem more accurate and sound a lot meatier, even the locust's weaponry is better (makes u not mind picking them up when ur COG ammo is dry, like I said the changes are subtle but make the whole experience even more enjoyable. Yes this is the single player experience that will shut the mouths of any Gears critics out there, also as you all know this excellent campaign can also be enjoyed with a mate in co-op! (edited) Multiplayer- I have not tried this yet, but as the pre release review below has stated, all your favourite game modes are there along with the new Locust horde mode ...... This looks awesome up to 5 Players have to fight off wave after wave of Locusts' ...... brilliant! I just right this as my first impression of Gears 2 so apologise if its not too detailed, but I'm sure you all want to find out about the actually game first hand, I will just say to anyone that loved Gears 1 you aint seen nothing yet! Gentleman start your chainsaws!
Seriously Flawed..... November 14, 2008 Mr. N. Hall (England) 12 out of 28 found this review helpful
So this game has a certain amount of' hype' to say the least. I for one had been waiting with bated breath like a schoolkid. I pre-ordered and when it arrived I couldnt get the wrapper off quick enough. Campaign mode was pretty damn good. Epic tried a little too hard to put some character into the emotionless characters from GOW1, and ended up laying some of the plotlines on a bit too thick, but overall an enjoyable experience with some amazing vast grandiose graphics. That was where the fun ended. Multiplayer mode is a disaster. Anyone who bought Gears 1 and lost entire weekends to maiming other people on XBL will tell you that the Gears online experience is the whole point of Gears. The campaign mode lasts a few short hours, but Online takes days of your life... its an awesome experience. Epic managed to undo all of this with GOW2. Its buggy, glitchy, temperamental and overall a frustrating experience, and thats just the new god-awful 'matchmaking process' which doesnt work. Then theres the gameplay. For some reason best known to themselves, Epic decided to fundamentally change the way the game plays. All titles have tweaks, and minor mods, but this fundamental shift in the weapon balances, targetting and movement physics has left the online game virtually unplayable. Some of the game modes such as 'annex' are now ridiculous, with entire teams running in with invincible chainsaws and ridiculous overpowered smoke/stun grenades causing players to spend half the game on their backsides trying to get back up without being sucked into another chainsaw. Most of the magazine reviews had been issued prior to the full launch and without playing the multiplayer game over the 'real' internet, hence lots of glowing reviews of the Campaign mode. But be aware, if you are thinking of buying this for the Multiplayer mode - go and have a look at the Official Epic forums for a real view on how 'good' this game is. The Epic forums are crawling with complaints of people spending literally 'hours' trying to get into games. There are tenfold more people who have complained and been summararily banned from the forums - Epic keen to gag the hordes of bad press this could give their 'flagship' title.Epic are saying very little on the subject, and if their overzealous moderators on the forums are anything to go by, they are more than a little embarrassed by all the complaints. I for one have had to turn the game off and play something else for fear of hurling my controller through the TV in sheer frustration. Online gaming is supposed to be fun... this is not the case here. Possibly the biggest and most disappointing over-hyped release ever.
Great but the Multiplayer is a Huge Let Down..... November 13, 2008 CARL SMITH (NEWCASTLE, UK) 7 out of 13 found this review helpful
The campaign, graphics and story are fantastic but the Multiplayer is terrible. Many people in the UK can't connect through the Multiplayer option?? The only way I can connect is if you've got a buddy in the USA who can invite you to their game, if you do this the Horde scenario is fun as you fight off waves of Locust. But overall until the Multiplayer is fixed I can only give it two stars, as the main reason for me buying is the Multiplayer...
OMG - Can't wait November 2, 2008 Mark Wilkinson (UK) 6 out of 32 found this review helpful
Ok - so its not out yet, but I got a little overexcited and searched through some leaked video footage. What is better? + New execution techniques - reverse chainsaw (groin upwards!). + Chainsaw battles. 2 people pressing B at the same time lock chainsaws and duel. + Old weapons are still there + New weapons have been added - my favorite so far. Its between the flame thrower and the tag proximity mine (remember Goldeneye?) + Gridlock is still there (love that level) and there are loads of new ones. + When you down an enemy you can pick them up and drag them around like a shield - sweeeet! + New revamped online games - execution and capture the flag (the flag is a person. You down them, pick them up and drag them back to your "castle". + If you get downed you can press buttons and crawl into cover. So much more. Have ordered this and hope to on line in several pieces crawling about for cover in bits and on fire on Friday night. See you there: Gamer Tag: sarge_mj
DO believe the hype ! November 8, 2008 Lks Canty (Surrey, England) 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
If you fancy betting your mortgage on a title being played for years ahead both on and offline then this is it. GOW2 is pushing the boundaries of what the xbox is capable of. Stunning graphics and cinamatic scenes combined with a strong story and gameplay and of course gratitious violence. Great selection of weapons such as the chainsaw equipped lancer rifle and the gnasher shotgun and ways to execute the locust hordes such as headstomps and using them as meatsheilds and strong co-op and Live play. If you only have to purchase one game this year then let this be it, you will not be dissapointed.
