another controversial game April 4, 2008 effortless (Gloucester) 20 out of 21 found this review helpful
Lots of differing voices of opinion here! It's like Assassins Creed all over again! Now I wasn't keen on Assassins Creed... I bought it and I play it, but I couldn't get past the concept of a Assassin as openly clumsy and careless as the one portrayed by the game. No such trouble here though! You're a Viking! Vikings hack people to pieces and do little else! Levels are map based and revolve around ticking all the boxes to unlock the main battle. These boxes are generally Build an army (by rescuing captured Vikings) and Summon a dragon (by obtaining a magical stone and charging it) Rescuing Vikings is a straight forward affair. Go to the markers on the map and slice and dice til everythings dead. It's not always that straight forward though... lots of enemy camps are heavily populated and require a stealthy 'pick them off' approach to release the captives who will then run around decapitating anyone left with you to take control of the camp. Dragon summoning is similar. First you have to obtain the magical stone, again by hacking/slicing a pre marked area on the map... once you have the stone you need to charge it.... and the charging of the stone is probably the most challenging aspect of the game. Charging requires you to infiltrate the enemy camp - the big one - where the final battle will take place! Now, if you make too much noise then there is no way to fight off the ensuing mass of demon spawn that come after you. So a stealthy apporch is the only way to go. This is also the most frustrating part of the game while you try and figure out the correct approach path to lead you to the magical charging circle. But once done you really do feel the sense of achievement because they really are challenging moments. Combat is pretty simple. Although not the hack and slash affair that a lot of people seem to think! You can buy training to learn new combos at set point on the map which unlock more powerful attacks. These new attacks are crucial! Even at a lower levels of the game its pretty hard to beat the shield carrying baddies without learning your shield busting combo attack! So, if you don't want to die too frequently then using the correct attack against the correct enemy is crucial. Combat is also fancied up by the use of empowering your weapons with elemental powers - fire, ice and lightneing - which basically makes them more powerful and the going a little easier. However this isn't something you can use willy nilly as orbs left behind by dead enemies are required to be collected to charge the attacks. There are also a few side quest require to get some groups of vikings to aid you in battle but these are also in the 'go to marked location and hack enemys for token item' approach - but it does seem to add some sense of variety to the proceedings. Once unlocked the final battles are also a challenge. There is a little strategy in when and where to unleash your dragon attacks, other than that its a case of stopping the summoners from creating more demons that will take out your poor overworked vikings. It's all very intense and bloody! So to conclude... I've found it great fun to play! It's repetative... but so was Assassins Creed... its good looking ... its bloody ...and it's challenging... I've found no problems with anything (people complaining about the darkness/daylight thing is a bit unfounded I feel) ... it is what it is! It's not pretending to be a deep and complex game... although its actually slightly more complex than I was expecting! If I was marking out of ten - I'd give it an 8 ... it's obviously not to everyones taste, but for everyone who hates it another will love it.... it's very well worth a try :)
This game has everything March 28, 2008 Mr Reviewer (London) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
Finally I have got my hands on Viking - and I'm not disapointed. Brutal combat, traversable scenery, exploration, stealth, HUGE battles, this has everything. The combat is so blunt and brutal, you can really feel the sword hitting the bad guys. And I love the free-roaming approach. Excellent.
good game December 2, 2007 Jimmy 206 (gloucesta) 10 out of 61 found this review helpful
this is a very gory game be warned the gameplay is great though the free roaming on this game is clever and definetely has to be tried out unlukily theres no online modes for this game but the great gameplay backs it up
A missed opportunity...below average April 7, 2008 J. Duducu (Ruislip) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Creative assembly are the company behind the excellent total war series. This game is sold on it being a free roaming Viking adventure heavy on the fantasy and a chance to have your own Viking army with dragons. A great idea from a great company. Well yes, until you actually play it. I thought this would be a cross between something like oblivion and dynasty warriors. It isn't even close to either. 95% of this game involves jogging around (yes jogging you can't seem to run) looking to find groups of the same 5 enemy types to hack to pieces. Again and again and again... Then there are the battles, when they happen (and you only get 6 or so in the whole game), you are a bit player in the grander scheme of things. Basically you have to go and kill a shaman to turn the tide of battle. That's it, you cannot tell your army to do anything and the dragon only attacks at very scripted moments. This from the people who brought you medieval total war 2 so they should know how to do this right! The other problem is logic. You build an army and get a dragon, why do I then have to creep around on my own constantly fighting dozens of enemies? My dragon flies over head to remind me it's still there and occasionally I go back to my army to buy up some provisions- but why does nobody help? Fundamentally there is nothing to do in this game except finding enemies and kill them. This is cool for an hour but then it dawns on you that there is nothing else to do. The thought put into the use of gold and very minor side quests is thinner than paper. Even the mini-map doesn't actually work the way a good one is supposed to. The whole thing is a big missed opportunity It is very pretty and the ads look amazing but games work on how much fun they are and this isn't very fun. Please do not believe the 5 star reviews this game is nowhere near that level of quality...I warned you.
Truely awful - I blame the missus March 29, 2008 J. Ryan (UK) 6 out of 16 found this review helpful
Well, that teaches me, bit bored on a Saturday - missus has gone over to a friends, thought, why not, lets buy a game, oh NoooOOOOoo. I don't really have the vocabulary to explain how awful this is, so to surmise - Graphics - nothing new, certainly not since Tomb Raider1 (the sea effect is okay, at least you can wander into it, Reggie Perrin fashion so you never have to waste any more of your life) Gameplay - predictable - you get hard and normal settings, I went for hard, and I dread to think how monotonous 'normal' would be. You don't need to bother collecting gold, learning spells etc. Just aimlessly wander around button basing Gamelife - H'mm - depends how bad your own life is really Value for Money - LOL - give money to charity, spend it on the lottery, butn it, buy microwave meals and watch them cook - anything is better than this. Gee - thanks Sega - I now know NEVER to buy another game from you. BTW - to those few people who attempted to review games based on screen shots and thereafter rated it on Amazon - please buy this game, you will love it. If you go ahead and buy the game, please - feel free to respond, I don't write this review due to boredoom (actually it is more entertaining than playing the game), I write it in respect to other gamers who have written objective or at least pertinent review in the past, who have saved me money and sanity. There is sooo much wrong with this game, but I really cannot be bothered to articulate them here.
