Good but some major flaws November 10, 2007 Mrs. L. M. N. Riach (Dundee, Scotland) 8 out of 14 found this review helpful
Naruto: Rise Of A Ninja, is a good game. Fundamentally, it covers all the bases. It has good graphics, sounds nice and has solid gameplay, however, its not quite the game some were hoping for. As I said, the graphics are nice. Not just nice, excellent. ROAN has some of the best cel shading I've ever seen. All the characters look like they do in the anime and the enviroments looks amazing. The animations are smooth and the the graphics still look amazing in the fighting sections. But as always graphics is secondary to gameplay. The sound is also great. It uses the actual soundtrack from the anime which is a nice touch. However, you're forced to listen to the english voice cast. And if like me, you're used to the japanese cast, then they all sound horrible ill-suited and VERY american. You'll also have to put up with Naruto spouting "BELIVE IT" every 5 seconds. Naruto:ROAN has two seperate sections, Free roaming and fighting. Most of your time in story mode will be spent in free roaming so I'll cover that first. In free-roam, you're allowed to wander the village of Konoha and the surrounding areas, at certain points in the game you unlock a Hide-And-Seek game and race. You can use your Sexy Jutsu to make "Lovelorn Villagers" happy and collect coins, deliver ramen; standard free-roamy stuff. Non-linear games are nothing new, not anymore. While this sounds like aomething that would be awesome for a Naruto game, it's nowhere near as good as it sounds. Konoha is small. Very small. Especially when comapred to games like Crackdown and Oblivion. Or even last-gen games like GTA3, Hulk: Ultimate Destruction or Spider-man 2. There are other areas besides Konoha. Well, a few. Theres the Forest Of Death and The Village Of Waves. But these area literally tiny. There are also paths inbetween Konoha and these areas, but those are so linear you may as well be walking down a stright path with the odd obstical. My main problem with the free-roaming in ROAN is that theres no point in it. It not FUN. By the end of the game, Naruto can dash, doouble jump and run up walls, but theres no reason to use ANY of these. An important thing in free-roam games is that you can make challenges for yourself to keep you entertained. Like jumping over canyons in GTA or pile-driving a thug from the top of a sky scraper, theres none of that in ROAN. Theres nothing to see or do that makes it worth taking the time to explore. GTA has Insane Jumps, easter eggs, Spider-man has plummeting off the Empire State Building and swinging away at the last moment, ROAN has...nothing. Konoha, looks great, and there a lot of buildings and deatil, but in the end theres not enough to do around it, so you end up just going straight to the missions. Which are a joke. You want to play a Sasuke in story mode? TOUGH. This is Naruto's game. You want to see Neji fight Hinata at the Chunin exams? TOUGH. Hinata isn't in the game. And besides, you can't play as anyone other than Naruto in Story Mode. The main problem with the missions is that they go through the basic events, but none of the specifics. For example, near the start of the manga, Squad 7 have to caputre a bell from their leader, Kakashi. Could be an entertaining variation from the main gameplay. Using stealth or some kind of Tenchu style system to sneak up on him, or just rushing and chasing him. But no. In ROAN, you just hit him until he gets KO'd. Mission over, on with the story. The other problem with this is that the actually story part of the game is very very very short. I'm not one for side-quests, and so, my amount of time playing to completion of the story is about 5 hours. And this is with maybe 1-2 hours of messing around.Generally, missions involve hitting someone, so you'll be finding yourself in the second part of the game. The fighting system in this game is that of a beat-em-up and is both average and where you'll derive most of the fun from the game. Its a good system. You only use X and Y to attack, B is block, A is jump, LT is for preforming Justsu. Sadly, theres not a lot of variation. Theres 13 combos in the game, 3 different throws and characters only have a maximum of 3 Justsu. Even then only 2 characters actually have 3 and most of the the characters who have 2 have "chakra concentration" as their second. There are 11 characters initally (Naruto, Sakura, Sasuke, Kakashi, Neji, Orichimaru, Kiba, Gaara, Rock Lee, Zabuza, Haku) and 4 more have been announced for DLC (Shikamaru, Choji, The Thrid Hokage and Jiriaya). However, when you consider the manga/anime has a cast of about 30+ (I don't know specifically) characters introduced by the time the game ends (Episode 80), its a bit dissapointing. Never-the-less, the fighting is fast and quite fun. Using a Jutsu puts the characters into a mini-game where the damage you do is determined by how well you preform. For example, Naruto's "Shadow Clone" jutsu has you choose buttons to press, then you have to choose the right timing in which to press the button you chose while attacking. With getting a certain number right results in extra damage. Each character also has a Rage mode, where they become Invicible and do extra damage. However this can be canceled by using any Jutsu or your own Rage mode. All in all, Naruto:Rise Of A Ninja is a very dissapointing game. However, its oddly fun for a while. Fans of the series will enjoy it as long as they weren't expecting too much. Non-fans will think it sucks. And at least it's short so I can play Eternal Sonata and Assassin's Creed soon.

Fun - but if he says "believe it" again i will do something he will regret December 18, 2007 J. Perry (Rotherham, England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This game is fun - nothing more simple than that I am a little fan of the manga series but i have not seen all the episodes and couldn't name you all the Hokages - but i do know basic knoledge and thats all u need. There are some differences such as the test with Kakashi now being just another oppertunity to punch him in his one showing eye. There are parts i don't like though - such as the parts (as the title of the review says) where he just randomly says "believe it" usually while holding out his thumb after speaking to some protoge (think i spelt that right) or about to start a fight, or finishing a fight, or even just thinking aloud. It sounds like an early american cartoon where they have to teach you about morals and virtues and believing in yourself and you can do anything, especially if you a ninja. The whole thing is filled with cartoon sequences from the series in english (japanese verison is availiable for download for free) with hundreds upon hundreds of parts where Naruto is scared and the picture zooms in to his eyes, or where he is making a promise and he is saying yet again "believe it" The fighting part is also okay - not great such as other fighting games (i.e. virtua fighter or DOA4) but the use of "jutsus" is a novel concepts that makes it good. Each one is presented well with good cell shaded graphics all in all a well presented and good game - but with some issues.
For every gamer!!! December 15, 2007 J. Tims (London, Englang) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This game is great! The village is just like in the cartoon, and the game gets better and better as you unlock more!! Perfect for all, aged 1-999!!!!
