Product Description
Working in conjunction with the Teamvision system, every aspect of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008's on-field play has been reworked and fine-tuned to create the balanced and strategic play of a high stakes match. Set-pieces have been improved, with full control given over the number of players and the position of the defensive wall. A wider range of set piece options are also available to make use of specific talents within the team. Marking the series' first appearance on PLAYSTATION 3, and its second Xbox 360 outing, these and the PC-DVD 'Next Generation' versions of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008's are further enhanced by stunning aesthetic elements. Player detail has been taken to incredible levels with full facial animation and the high-definition detail afforded by the hardware used to show full movement and subtle details to the various kits during the course of a match. All 'Next Gen' versions will also benefit from an extensive Edit mode, allowing gamers to customise their PES experience.

1 out of 5 stars Annoying   June 21, 2007

It really annoys me that people write reviews for games, giving a 5 star rating for a game that has not been released!!

Ok, so you've played a demo? Nooooooo you havent! All that has been released about this game are a few screen shots and a company's description. Can you really award 5 stars for that! God you people get on my nerves just basing reviews on stuff you have read!

Winthorpe - you're right, there's no law in people giving their opinions. But this is meant to be a REVIEW section. You can't review something that hasn't even had a demo released. They're not reviewing. They're cluttering the site with nonsense ratings. So are you. And yes, so am I.

Nobody knows how good it's going to be. The sooner Amazon don't allow reviews until the release date the better.

Could people please quit it with these reviews that aren't a help to anyone and just sound like they know nothing about the game anyway.

Just do everyone a favour and wait till the game is released

This is a review of the Xbox 360 version only as I haven't played the either of the PS versions.

After a year of waiting, Xbox owners finally have a playable version of Pro Evo. Unlike its predecessor, PES 7 is a return to the familiar gameplay style that Pro Evo fans have grown to love (and over the past year miss).

If like many football fans you are looking for a realistic football game then you need look no further than the Pro Evo games. Unlike Fifa, Pro Evo has a realistic feel to the players. Rather than relying on a passing game Pro Evo gives the player a chance to dribble with the ball as well as out-muscle opponents rather than simply giving up possession as soon as they are touched by an opponent.

First for the good. PES 7 is a reach back to the good old days of PES 4&5. These two games gave the player the ability to run rings around his opponents (once good enough) and set up blistering long-range shots. I'm glad to say after being heinously removed in PES 6 these abilities have been returned. Although not quite the ball-hugging dribbling of 4, 7 once again allows a player to skip through defenders whilst frantically tapping on the Right Trigger button to pull off a combination of side-steps and bringing to ball to a dead halt in order to sprint off in another direction leaving the defence looking dazed and confused. The ability to turn players that was forecast for 6 has also made its entrance here. It is now possible to burst through the defence and by the time they have had a chance to collect their wits and head off after you there is little to no chance of them catching you if you are using a player of decent speed. On this point, it should be further noted that the tackling has been changed. Although in 6 and the past games just pressing tackle wouldn't almost automatically give you the ball as it often will in FIFA, if you have been facing the player you could almost certainly remove the ball from their possession. In 7 this has been given a make-over. Tackling has become more accurate. It is far easier to trip the player if you attempt to tackle too early or late, or come in a slightly bad angle. This means a player must take more care in positioning for a challenge, which arguably brings an added element of realism.

This increased risk of giving away fouls therefore leads to the next improvement, free kicks. While the free kicks in 6 never quite felt as though you were in full control of the placement, 7 again returns to the tried and tested feel of 4 & 5. The ability to curl the ball has been refined and it no longer goes sailing over the bar or flying past the post with very little curl on it. Finally to the long-shots I mentioned above. PES 6 was woefully lacking in its shooting ability. Long shots were near-on impossible, while any shot on goal was almost certain to be automatically centred on goal, making it far too easy for keepers to save anything other than rebounds and bullet-like shots. 7 has in most ways corrected this glaring problem. Shots can now be placed at any angle in goal (with the help of the improved ability to curl mentioned above about free kicks), while blasted shots can leave the camera focussed on the player as the ball flies into the back of the net off screen due to the pace. There is still some slight centring of shots, but nothing as obvious as Konami's poor previous attempt in this series.

This Xbox version has an edit player option, something sorely missing from the 360 version of 6, but present in the PS2 version. The detail is immense, providing the user ample opportunity to create themselves and their friends and give them a chance to play for their heroes. These blistering graphics are carried over into game, especially replays and close-ups. As usual Konami have chosen not to overly distract the player with these details while playing, instead focussing on the gameplay, which I feel is definitely the way to go.

PES 7 is not without its faults though. There are always going to be small things that niggle at a player after a while of playing and Pro Evo is not exception. A recurring flaw from 6 is that of sliding. It doesn't happen every time, but especially when the tempo of the game has just been increased, such as on the counter-attack, this flaw can be extremely frustrating. When you slide with a selected player, you can suddenly see the striker sprinting past you and your player standing there as though nothing has happened. Yelling at the screen (at least I often do at this point) you notice that your defender ahead of this striker is no longer on his feet as he was a few seconds previously, but that he is currently lying on the grass apparently catching 40 winks. Yes, it's the good old computer deciding to change your player for you. This doesn't necessarily only happen with slide tackles, but also normal challenges, however you are less likely to get your player sent off for those. The only way around this seems to be to set your player settings on fully manual, but then this may require a drastic change in game style. Another re-occurring problem from previous games is that players still do not chase down a loose pass from their team as quickly as you would like. As your opponent sprints towards it, your player chooses to head in that direction at a more leisurely trot. Not game-ruining, but frustrating none-the-less.

It wouldn't be a new game without a couple of new problems brought to the series. There has been a delay added to free kicks before the whistle is blown, giving your opponent ample time to move in front of your stationary players and intercept the ball. The ability to pass from a free kick to various players hasn't been refined enough either, you need to turn the screen to face the desired player, giving your opponent plenty of chance to move as well.

Finally for two points which could be seen as good or bad depending on your personal point of view. Firstly is the goal-keepers. No longer the Velcro-handed professionals of previous games, the tendency of these boys now seems to punch/block out most shots back into the path of the oncoming strikers. Although they can still pull of some spectacular saves, and I mean spectacular, their ability to actually catch the ball has been severely impeded. This can be very frustrating when a corner comes whipping in, which you'd expect the keeper to gather up safely in his arms, as is headed straight for him, however, he decides to fumble it into the back of his own net. Although arguably more lifelike, this inability to rely on the keeper stopping every simple ball can certainly be annoying, although players with less experience may well relish this chance to pick up a few goals where ordinarily they would be unable. The last addition is the introduction of diving, love it or hate it, it's a real part of the game and now Konami has chosen to include it in the master of all football games. It's an addition that only time will tell if useful, but look forward to seeing many yellow cards flying (on both sides) when those three little buttons are pressed together.

PES7 is a delight to play in comparison with 6, after a year of misery a breath of fresh air has arrived and Pro Evo lovers around the world must be heaving a sigh of relief that they don't have to abandon the series in search of the next great football game. Very enjoyable to play, fantastic to look at and despite a few niggling problems, a positive evolution in the football game genre. 9/10

4 out of 5 stars Is it too soon to be disapointed?   October 29, 2007

First off let me say that i am a masive Pro Evo fan and have been looking forward to the release of PES 2008 for sometime since a somewhat below par PES 6.

I am however somewhat disapointed with the latest offering ... now dont get me wrong what people have mentioned about graphics etc etc are spot on and are impressive and they have tweaked certain areas that definately needed improving. A nice touch is the option to send more men forward on corners and set pieces Also playing against the computer has been dramatically improved through the subtle differences the new AI has brought to the game is much more challenging and less frustrating than PES 6. The biggest positive change is the passing and movement of the players, which means games are free flowing and not so repetitive because goals can now come from many different sources instead of just a through ball to Adriano!

This however is also my 1st gripe, it is now extremely easy to score and to score from just about anywhere. This i know is better than PES 6 but already you can score for fun and we all know it takes a few weeks to really get into Pro Evo so what happens after you have mastered the game will it be a case of shooting from any where on the pitch and hitting the top corner every time?
A prime example of this are the free kicks. already i have scored more freekicks in the last couple of days than i have compared to a whole years worth of PES 6.
After playing a few ranked matches online it has become quite apparent through the scorelines as several matches i played alot of them have ended with big scores like: 5-5, 7-6, 4-5, 8-3 and i have yet to play in a game where i havent scored. Ok so its not boring but its also not realistic a factor which is something that PES tries to emulate throughout its game play.

Also with a highly skilled player such as Ronaldinho you can literally walk the length of the pitch giving the defenders the run around and then walk the ball into the net. Defending has definately become more of a challenge than PES 6 where i felt the real challenge was scoring different types of goals. Again this can be seen as both a positive and negative element to the game but personally i feel the balance should have be somewhere in between as scoring long range efforts and tricky individual goals happen that often they will become the norm and not the wonder goals we used to scream about and watch the replays time and time again.

My major problem with PES 2008 is the online game play as people have already mentioned before i am also very disapointed with the frame rate and lagging as i much prefer to pit my wits online against human players, Which has meant i have spent more time playing against the computer due to be being extremely frustrated with the pinball effect that occurs in every online game.
The whole online experience compared to PES 6 is extremely slow going, from searching and finding a suitable match etc to the other extremely annoying element to the online play, which is the constant dual controlled replays. This means your always waiting for your opponent to skip whatever replay is being shown this is made more time consuming with the option to send a message to your opponent. Whilst it might be a nice idea it is totally unnecessary and most of the options it gives you to send are irrelevant. All this does is slow down the time it takes to complete a game as nearly every action results in this replay and you recieve the message: "Waiting for another player" and you end up spending 20 minutes playing a 10 minute match!

No doubt not everyone will agree with my opinion but remember this is only my first impressions of the game after playing it for 4 days (quite intensely) I'm not trying to rubbish the game as i am a big PES fan and i just wanted to vent some of my early frustrations, maybe the wait and expectation has simply overcome me but like i said earlier it takes a few weeks to really get into any PES game and i really hope that it proves me wrong as the little intricate elements to the game play become more apparent. With regards to the online lagging i'm sure it will be sorted with an update in the very near future but i'm sure they wont improve the replay options as much as would love them to remove it because i'm far too impatient!
