Good change of pace from all the FPS April 2, 2008 Mr. Paul Thompson (Belfast, UK) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I got this game on monday and have so far really enjoyed it. The visuals are very good and it has a Gears of War look. I am currently on the 4th mission with 9 overall. The first few missions are very short but they are just to introduce you to the controls. Following missions are much longer. The animations are excellent. I just finished my 1st boss battle and it was very movie like. The glaive is pretty cool too and works well as do the guns. The main gripe I have is the Melee attack doesnt work properly. It takes a few hits to kill an enemy and by then they can hit you once and your near dead. The story is also rather bland and sometimes you dont know who people are or what your doing. A hint or objective display would have been useful. The multiplayer isnt bad though it is over very quickly. Once the main character is dead the round is over. There are only 2 modes which are ok but they really need to release more to keep people interested which has been promised as downloadable content. Overall if you liked Gears of War and Residnent Evil 4 then chances are you will like Dark Sector. It uses elements fom both games. It will keep you occupied until GTA 4 arrives and also is a nice change of pace from all the FPS im playing at the minute.
Fantastic! April 14, 2008 Scott Bonner (Romford, UK) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
This has to be the most under rated game ever! I got it as there was not a lot of games out that i didnt already have and i fancied something new, and to be honest it has blown me away! Im a big gears of war fan and have been desperate for a game that can thrill me with quality graphics and animations that gears gives. Dark Sector is a mix of gears of war, the darkness, resident evil and assassins creed (for the fight scene visuals). Graphically, this game is equally as impressive as gears of war......sometimes its even better! gameplay is also of a very high quality with animations that will make your eyes pop out of your head! plot....not sure what the plot of the story is but who cares!! everything else about this game is fantastic and you will love every minute of it! i could write lots more about the A.I. the weapons, boss battles etc but the longer im writing this, the less time i have to play it! gotta go....there is a zombie out there waiting for me to decapitate him!! ps...should also mention that this game has the best 5.1 sound quality of any game i have ever played.
oh its dark alright April 13, 2008 Timz0RRRrrrrr (Ye Olde Englande) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
without wanting to pre-set the tone to 'rediculous-fanboy'... I have to say the one word I have to open with is 'underated' Dark Sector is fantastic! It looks amazing, it builds up slowly, the glaive (on the contrary to so many other reviews ive read) isnt hard to control at all. As far as bullet time goes it helps break up the fury of the combat making it all in all a more balenced experience. My one critisism is difficulty... got it home at about lunch time, was done before bed with a hearty 630G under my belt. Far too easy. However, having done so a Brutal-Difficulty was unlocked so hopefully that will solve my problem. Bottom line - i'm impressed. Online play - See Gears of War. Rediculously similar.
A grapically stunning, but slightly hollow and detached experience April 12, 2008 Shion 2 (Devon/UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The premise of dark sector is a good one, You are a merciless secret agent who will stop at nothing to compete the mission, and you get infected by a virus which gives you a number of spectacular powers, which center around the 3 edged spinning blade (glaive) protruding from your right hand. Sounds good right? .....well Graphically dark sector is stunning, the shattered remains of the post apocayptic city you end up fighting for your life in is gritty and has a real feeling of decay, The main character himself is well animated with fluid movements and the look of his metal arm when you step from a dark doorway into the glaring sunlight is realy something and also the gore level is quite high with limbs being severed and heads being chopped off at the scalp, but aside from the next gen graphics (which we really expect now anyway), there are a number of niggling things that make dark sector far from the great game most magazines were making it out to be. The control system is well designed and does the job but it isnt really user freindly, its way too senitive even to the slightest touch while aiming making it jerky and quite hard to get the desired shot while shooting an enemy and on the opposite side of things when you run (ala gears of war) the controlls are very un-responsive leaving you able really only able to bolt in a straight line. Furthermore there is no quick turn function which means alot of the time you can be approached by a machete bearing enemie and have not way to turn around quick enough to dispatch them (and you die in 2 hits!). Now what really lets DS down is the glaive controll, it is incredibly booring to controll, basically you steer it while a bullet time effect kicks in now 5 years ago this would have been incredbly new and inventive but now it just seems tired and over used, especially when you have to use it multiple times in one battle and the bullet time just gets booring. Steering the glaive is ok but nowhere near as responsive as you would want it steers sluggishly and if you even go near an object the glaive just flys off at a random angle totally ruining the death blow you were about to unleash on the enemy behind the pillar. The difficulty is similar to kane and lynch, taking leaps from hard to insane at random junctures, for example normal foot soldiers are east to dispatch with no real bother (if there arent many) but after awhile an enemy with a shield and machete will appear and they are almost impossible to kill with your atandard weapons or even your supposedly ultimate weapon the glaive. THe enemys ai is pretty average and what you com to expect from most games, they take cover, try to surround you and if you give them a chance they will sneak up behind you (although most of the time they just stand a few feet away and crouch as if waiting for something). What makes the game hard is that all of your weapons are very underpowered (even with upgrades)and the enemies are very good shots meaning that if you break from cover and there are a sall group of enemies in front of you, you will pretty much be almost dead. The same goes for bosses they are sooo acurate that hiding from them or making a blind dash for cover is nigh on impossible. Now onto the most important part of any game, the story. It really isnt very involving, the main character comes off as a bit of a whining and unlikeable person that you really dont care about. his plight and the plight of the town he is in isnt really given any consideration and just serves as a vehicle for a loosely based sequence of battles with increasingly over the top bosses. It would have been great to be absorbed into the world and really feel that you are experiencing a battle for survival but it just doesnt come up with the goods, even the supposedly star cast of voice actors just sound like their walking through their lines- theres no real emotion apart from anger and the reast of the time characters just sound bored as if they have rehearsed their lines 2 many times. These points aside, once you start playing DS the atmosphere of the graphics just drags you into its moody and dark world, everything feels heavy and buzzes with atmosphere, you realy wont want to stop playing....atleast untill you die 5 times trying to get past the machine gun nest and you end up getting machete'd in the back repeatedly. If there was a game i would compare it to it would be the movie adaptation of blade 2 (any of you who played it will know what I mean), it has the same sort of DNA. Although it is an incredibly flawed game, it still has its charms and if you are looking for something a bit different, and you have a very good patience, give DS a try.
Great game, good looking game and under rated April 15, 2008 A. hall i got this game like a week ago and i have to say what a game. the gameplay is so much fun, i thinks its one of the best games out for the 360. the story is not as bad as people say, but not the best. online play is fun and additive, but could have had more games to play part from the two. but the two games are very well done and fun to play. its a game to get
