Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review:

In a nutshell:
Freelance photographer Frank West is stuck in a shopping centre full of zombies and he’s only got 72 hours to escape. How he manages that feat is entirely up to you, with his fate, that of dozens of other survivors and a legion of the walking dead entirely in your hands.

The lowdown:
Since this is basically an unofficial video game remake of Dawn of the Dead it tries to recreate all the major elements from the movie, including scenes with hundreds of zombies on screen at once. Given free reign in the shopping centre there are 250 different objects you can use to dispatch them but in the end escape is your own really option. The question is how you manage it and whether you properly investigate what’s going, try and help other survivors or photograph their demise in an attempt to win a Pulitzer. Although helping the survivors involves some fairly dull escort mission the only real flaw is the oddly strict save system which won’t let you save more than once. It’s not nearly enough to spoil the fun of a good zombie massacre though.

Most exciting moment:
Undoubtedly the best fun in the game is, much like Grand Theft Auto, not completing the missions but just mucking around – which inevitably involves attacking zombies with everything from a lawnmower to ladies’ handbags. Doing so with a cartoon head on and a pair of hotpants raises the level of surreal fun even further.

Since you ask:
Although officially the game is nothing to do with Resident Evil, the game contains a number of sly references to the series. One of the more subtle is the sandwich bar “Jill’s Sandwiches”, named after the famously awful line of dialogue in the original Resident Evil game.

The bottom line:
An action game with zombies, weapons and options by the hundreds.

In this game you play as a journalist called Frank West and you are left in a shopping mall to take pictures and gather stories...and Oh yea, the mall is full of zombies. After a few cutscenes, your 72 hour notice of when the helicoptor will be back to pick you up is set and then your off to do whatever you like.
Some people may be put off by the fact that there is a time limit, but its not as if you are going to be in constant worry that you are going to miss the chopper because 72 hours of game time is still many hours of real time gameplay.
You can tackle this game in many different ways, you can stick to the main story and try to uncover the causes for the zombie outbreak, you can go about rescuing survivors, or you can just go exploring and killing and basically causing as much mayhem as possible. Each of these poses different opportunities and rewards and therefore leads to a game with incredible replayability value. I love the shopping mall, because its big, but not too big. This is good because you dont get that dreaded feeling of its too big to explore properly. So after many hours of gameplay, you may end up learning where things are hidden and the most efficient way to get from place to place, and this in my opinion gives a real sense of achievement.
I must admit, it does take a while to get into the game because of the contols and the fact that you are so weak at the start. But keep playing and you'll soon be enjoying it.
Some people found it difficult at the start of the game, but you will progress up to level 10-15 quite quickly and in doing so, the game will become easier to play. This RPG like system allows you to unlock more skills, health bars and item slots and a good thing about this is, if you die, you can start a brand new game with your previous stats.
Some people have critisised the lack of save points in Dead Rising. I think that you just need to know where to find them. Learn where the save points are and you shouldn't have a problem. I advise that you do this as soon as possible because if you die, its back to the last save i'm afraid.
People have also critisised the small on screen text, when recieving phone calls, talking to characters and examining objects. This wont apply to people with HDTV.
Now lets focus on how much fun this game is... in this game, pretty much anything is a weapon from bowling balls to lawnmowers and from cooking oil to toy laser swords, as well as guns and blades. You will most probably spend hours just running around killing zombies in loads of different ways. and if thats not enough you can go into loads of clothes shops and dress Frank how you like. Believe me when I say there are some hilarious costumes out there.
Dead rising is special, its got a great story, fantastic graphics and a fantastic atmosphere about it as well as its fair share of dark humour. and if you get bored doing the missions, why not explore, if you get bored of exploring kill some more zombies. It is very hard to get bored on this game in my opinion. Once you truly get into dead rising, you are going to be addicted to this for quite some. Definetely worth the money, one of the few truly fantastic games out on 360 to date.

2 out of 5 stars I lost interest after dying 400 times trying to save the game.   November 17, 2006

This game is brilliant. You can kill zombies and pretty much choose your missions. Also has a pretty large free roam capability with no end to the zombies.

However...After about 3 days of playing this game I got very bored. The 1st time I died I chose the wrong option to save and had to restart the entire game. That includes the annoyingly long intro. And all the walk throughs.

Then I tried again, this time I done a few missions and got the hang of the game. It was getting pretty late so I wanted to save my game. This is where the problems start. You have to find a rest room or a specific bench to save the game. Now I only found 2 places on the whole game to save. And with the awful map this was very difficult. Not to mention I was nearly dead when I got there. So then when you restart you always have to go in search of food, which is always the oposite direction to your mission.

Mission arrows seem to change direction and point to nowhere. People you are saving or recruit get eaten in 5 seconds. Not only that, the on screen tips and help are written in tiny writing which is barely readable, even on a massive tv.

Personally I would return the game, but I didn't keep the reciept. It looks amazing and the 1st 10 minutes are fun, after that it's annoying and boring, as every mission is just hitting zombies or shooting someone. Everyone you save dies ten seconds later anyway. Then you can't save the game and eventually die yourself. Buy Hitman instead.

Do you like zombies? Do you like garden tools? Do you like photography? How about combining all three?
Dead Rising, the latest zombie game from Capcom (creators of Resident Evil), trads ground few games dare to tread. How do you create a game which is violent, gory, and excessively brutal without upsetting the censors? Well, DR manages it with an amazing amount of style. You are a freelance photographer, who has been tipped off about some unusual activity in a small town. You soon find yourself in a shopping mall, surrounded by zombies and dotted throughout with survivors. The simple premise is as follows: You have 72 hours to get in, get the pictures (and maybe even some kind of story?), and get out again. However, remove the zombies from this game, and the comparisons with Resident Evil end. Where Resident Evil has deep plot and linear gameplay, DR is free and wild. It thumbs its nose at traditional gameplay, and actually manages to create a fairly fresh and new take on how action games are played. Let me give you a few examples.
First, you can use almost anything that you find in the game as a weapon. From frisbees to shotguns, baseball bats to electric guitars, steel pipes to billboards, everything is your friend. Anything you see which can logically be used as a weapon, is a weapon. This idea creates a wealth of options, which can create truly bizarre results. I honestly think that this is the first game in which you can (as a man) run around in a ladies twinset and pearls, wearing a toy donkey head over your face, hitting crowds of enemies with a golf club, or a sledgehammer. Seriously though, it keeps the main game mechanic of killing zombies fresh throughout the games main story.
Secondly, you can choose how you want to play the game. You have 72 game hours to get in, get your pictures, and get out. Along the way, you discover events which slowly reveal what is going on and why. If you wish to follow the main plot, you can. If you wish to just try to rescue the survivors within the mall, you can do that too. If you just want to run around finding new and creative ways of killing zombies, or taking weird and wonderful pictures, hey presto! thats allowed too. Or, you can try to find a way to combine all the above and more.
In case you think that this game may get repetitive, DR has a couple of other tricks up its sleeve too. Firstly, the mall is infested with what the game calls "psychopaths". Without wishing to give too much away, these are survivors who have lost the plot in one way or another. These guys tend to have a hostage or two, or a particularly good weapon, or maybe a key to a short cut. Like the rest of the game, you could probably get through the bulk of your encounter without running into too many of them. You would be missing out on some of the games true diversity if you did, though.
The plot of DR is amazingly twisted and bizzare, yet you can't help but good-naturedly follow it along, allowing your belief to be suspended easily. DR is fortunately played out very well, with enough tongue-in-cheek to keep everything darkly funny, whilst without resorting to blatant wink-at-the-camera humour. This was the most unexpected thing about DR for me, as I assumed plot would take a serious back seat to the zombie bashing. The story itself does make you want to complete the missions on your first run through, to see what is really going on. And with 5 different endings, you may need a couple of run throughs.
I can honestly say I picked up Dead Rising expecting to play through the main story, put it down and never return. I was pleasantly surprised to find I was wrong. It is pretty much impossible to fight all the psychopaths, rescue all the survivors, see all of the main plot and find all the little hidden extras in two or three sittings, let alone one. And the game unlocks extra modes once you complete the main story for the first time. Also, there really is a lot of fun to be had just coming up with new ways to beat the zombies, or trying to take really weird pictures.
Please note one very important thing: PLEASE do not buy this game for your ten year old son or daughter. It has a certificate for a reason, this is a very gory and violent game. I myself am 27 years old, and it shocked me a little at times.
If, like me, you were unsure whether this game would hold your interest for longer than five minutes, let me tell you one thing. I played this one afternoon at a friends. The following day, I went out and bought it. That was nearly three weeks ago, and I still play this for a couple of hours everyday. I can almost guarantee you won't regret buying this game.

Awesome fun sums up just about everything in Dead Rising, but since this is a review I'll have to put a bit more depth into it.

Dead Risings due to hitshelfs in September and it looks like pure brilliance. You play as Frank West, an on the edge photographer in desperate need off a story of a life time. Franks in for a little bit of luck with his story of a life time quest, but on the other hand hes in for 72 hours of hell.

While pursuing some sort of zombie invasion or infection, Frank has found himself in a zombie invested shopping mall that is packed with the undead. The games starts with Frank waiting for a rescue helicopter to come and pluck him to saftey, but a miner catch is that he will have to wait 72 hours for the helicopter to arrive. This is where the fun starts though and what you do in this time is totally up to you. There is a 120 shops with almost everything in them able to be picked up by Frank and the items can be used to his advantage, such as running at a mob of zombies with a huge umbrella open or smacking them with a guitar. There are timed events that you can only catch if your in that area at a certain time, although never be wondering what to do next as you will always get calls and information about the goings on inside the mall. This is where Dead Rising proves itself to be a smart game, with more than a hundred NPCs ( Non controlled players ) you will have a good handful of replay value on your hand's.There are many other cool aspects to Dead Rising such as having to eat and so on.

Overall my most wanted game off 2006, along with gears of war. Nuff said!
