Amazon.co.uk Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter. The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles | Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat | World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever | The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes | The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world. Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity. Key Features - Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
- Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
- Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
- Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
- Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

Based on MP beta (not a demo) November 2, 2008 MisterM (UK) 16 out of 26 found this review helpful
Anyone reviewing this game before November 14th can only base their conclusions on the mp beta that's available - this is not a demo and shouldn't be seen as such. If you read the development blog you'll know that beta feedback has already produced a lot of tweaks some of which should make it into the first patch. Yes World at War will be a flawed release. So were CoDs 1,2 and 4. These days games need patching to improve themselves and this is no bad thing in multiplayer games where feedback from Joe Public should produce better and better games. If you find the beta tiresome, that people take lots of hits to kill and so on, find a server running a hardcore game - it makes a difference. Cod4 is no different in this respect. Many fps mp games are vastly improved by patches and the mods that enthusiasts bring out. I'll be getting the game, and suspect I'll be frustrated until patches and mods sort it. But the call of duty games have been fantastic fun over the years.
Could be a great game... if I could play it November 16, 2008 Mr Gary (United Kingdom) 14 out of 19 found this review helpful
I was looking forward to this game, but unfortunately when I try and start the solo game my system freezes. Having spent several hours of my weekend surfing the web and trying various fixes I know there are many people who have the same problem. I don't want this to be a rant but I think that Activision should have ironed out a few more of the bugs before they released the game. Hopefully some negative reviews will hit them where it hurts... in sales volume. This should be a good game but, if you're looking to buy it hold off until there's a patch released that fixes the launch freeze issue (note patch 1.1 does not fix it on may PC).

Over hyped, highly disappointed. October 29, 2008 C. Feng (UK) 10 out of 36 found this review helpful
I've pre-ordered COD4 25, love it from the start, so when this game showed up I jumped at it and Pre-ordered the game for 30, got in to early beta access, played for 30mins and gave up. COD5 is pretty much exactly like COD4 with worse looking characters than the original game. Feels like a mod to the original game than a stand alone, some of the weapon modifications are taken straight from modern combat, for example, silencer on a WW2 machine gun? Or reflex sight on a springfield rifle? back in ww2 unlikely. The weapons in game sounds like toys, literally, they sound really muffed, as if recorded from a separate room, as opposed to the crisp clear shots in COD4. The heavy machine guns are insanely accurate, while the rifles can almost fire burst shots by rapidly tapping mouse, everyone in beta is running around constantly firing while running so attempting to take aimed shots at people is pointless, with no distinctive front line. Shot gun pretty much rule the roost in most games, and even it sounds like you have a pillow attached to the end of it when you fire. Single player storyline are very sketchy with no sense of purpose except one of the sniper missions, its mostly all about clearing house after house, trench after trench. Compared to the tight knit storyline of COD4, this game doesn't allow you to get in to character at all. The dodgy scripting that sometimes allows enemy to spawn right in front of you doesn't help with that either. Also the battlefield tend to be chaotic, with no clear definition of a front line, enemy and your friends seems to be always right next each other, making friendly fire very common. With Multiplayer you pretty much get UAV and airstrike with UAV replced by spy plane and airstrike replaced by artillery which seems to always land near you no matter where you are, giving the same functions. Instead of helicopter support you get a huge number of 1 shot kill dogs, which adds to the general chaos in the game. Movements is very much the same as COD4, except everything seems a lot more sluggish, also death animation is really poorly done, feels like a half attempt at ragdoll. Overall not worth the 40RRP and 30 pre-order, not much effort was made in to this game, and it shows.

Having played cod4 non stop since it came out i couldnt wait for the latest installment. I dont understand people having problems installing the game unless that was the beta version. I have a mid range vista system core2 duo hd4850 and the game installed and plays like a dream. Solo player is a bit linear but then so was cod4 solo campaign. I`m part way through solo campaign and the action is totaly frantic and its graphically and sonically superb....well done Treyach
