Amazon.co.uk Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter. The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles | Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat | World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever | The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes | The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world. Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity. Key Features - Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
- Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
- Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
- Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
- Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

World Bore 2 November 16, 2008 G. A. Kester (UK) 26 out of 40 found this review helpful
Treyarch, it seems, just don't want to learn. Call of Duty 3 drew a lot of criticism because of certain design choices it made. It had linear levels that forced you to take a single path headlong into danger, where trying to flank or use tactics other than "rush into the fire and hope for the best" would have made the game so much more enjoyable. Your AI comrades would wait behind cover until you tripped an invisible switch, often requiring you to advance on your own, against overwhelming fire, until you reached it. They would also be ineffective, in order to get the player to make as many kills as possible, and you would often see a GI and a German almost face to face blasting away with zero effect. Enemies would rain grenades down on you in bushels, despite you only being able to throw one back (the most I counted in one go was seven!) And also, enemies at an objective would constantly respawn until, again, you reached an invisible tripwire. Plus, incredibly, there wasn't (and still isn't) a cover system! All in all it was an exercise in frustration on the harder settings - a game that didn't allow you to advance through skill and tactical awareness, but blind luck. And guess what? Two years on, they've done it again! All the same old faults and frustrations are here, even after sublime advances in shooter games like Infinity Ward's CoD 4 and Gears of War. Now I'm sure that the fanboys will say that "this is realistic, it's what war is like innit?" Well no, and as someone who has worn the uniform of the British Army I can tell you that there is no way any soldier would attack in the way this game frequently makes you. What is often annoying is that you see perfect ways of getting around the enemy to ambush or flank them, but invisible walls prevent you from taking them. I'm sure Treyarch though this would induce adrenaline in the player, but it only generates a sour feeling of being badly cheated, and of having the game kill you randonly in an effort to spin out its meagre playing time. I've been a gamer for 34 years now, so if the kiddiwinks want to mark this review down because "hey, it's cool 'cos you blow stuff up" then so be it. But, for serious gamers looking for a great shooter, look elsewhere like Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway. Five years ago this kind of limited fare would have been fine, but not now. Dated and barely playable, CoD 5 is continuing proof that Treyarch just can't make good games.
ill informed people making judgement far too early November 15, 2008 Gary Easton 12 out of 15 found this review helpful
I had the beta version but thought it wise to reserve my judgement till the game was released. This game is brilliant in every way, it differs from the first three (that are also based on WWII)in lots of ways. The type of missions are more akin to COD4, for example sniper based missions. I have never been the biggest fan of the first three and to be honest was apprehensive about COD 5 as the previous game was absolutley amazing. This game is just as good and just as involving, the multiplayer coop is a welcome addition especially for those missions that can be quite testing on Veteran difficulty and treyarch have done a great job in the provision of weapon attachments, for example i was a big fan of the red dot sight, this game has a WWII alternative, its great its brill so dont be put off by cod4 fanboys who have not even played the game.
i must be playing a different game October 15, 2008 W. Thomas (uk) 11 out of 34 found this review helpful
well i to have played the beta demo of cod 5 and im sorry but i totally disagree,i think the game actually lacks atmosphere and the guns sound terrible one gun simply sounds like a typewriter.yes the graphics are still the best out there, but the game feels very thin hard to explain really, its like the grenades for e.g when a grenade is near you a poor icon comes up and the explosion well its pathetic.same as the artillery srikes just like cod 3 yawn!! poor. i think that if you have ever owned cod 3 you will no it been made by the same people and it feels like cod3 but with new perks and new ideas for getting kill streaks.all in all im not buying this game after playing the demo im goin to stick with the king of ALL games "COD4" infinity ward you rule!!! and please listen to the customer WE HAVE HAD ENUF OF WW2!!!!
Played the Beta October 14, 2008 Mr. A. P. Pack (South England, UK) 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
If you like COD4 then you will like this. Graphics are again stunning and surround sound has been improved to make it more realistic. Sound changes more dramatically than in COD4 when running on sand or brick etc. For me it won't replace COD4 but I will order it and play it along side. Game play feels a little harder but I think that's because the weapons have a realistic feel. Perks are cleverly done so as not to ruin the period feel of the game. There are only 3 maps in the beta so can't wait to so see the full version.
Trash, absolute trash October 20, 2008 S. Hill (Edinburgh,UK) 8 out of 60 found this review helpful
This game is rubbish. No way in hell does it feel like a sequel(of sorts) to COD4. Feels like a step backwards. The gameplay, sound, graphics all feel, sound and look dated. The sooner infinity ward bring out COD6 the better.
