Civilization Revelations... June 13, 2008 Haunted Nostril (UK) 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
Got my shiny new copy of Civ through the post early this morning and could not have been more excited. I've been waiting for some serious RTS/God Sim action for some time now - genres that have so far been done extremely well (in some cases) but not nearly often enough on the consoles. So now I've got my grubby little mitts on it, and although I've only just scratched the surface of some of the deeper elements after a mere 6 hours of play, I've decided to throw a little review up here on Amazon to let other potential buyers know what I think of it. So I'll give a quick point by point effort that I might edit later as I get further into it: - Great graphics - colourful and extremely functional, everything is clear and detailed enough, but not so much as to clutter the screen and obscure the playing field. - Control System is tweaked perfectly for consoles and everything flows smoothly and works perfectly. Complete control in so few buttons is a true achievement. - Nice new additions and old faves combine to make a great addition to the Civ universe. Grouping three units to form armies is great and I've enjoyed perusing the vast encyclopaedia. Also the globe style map is a nice touch and filled with exciting stuff to discover, and the numerous ways to complete the scenarios are well thought out. - Difficulty settings are well implimented and have a nice learning curve that encompasses Civ Veterans and Newcomers alike - although playing entirely on easy could severely cut into longevity; nice enough to get back into the swing of things but then I knocked it up a notch to get the most out of it. - The Technology tree is full of nice touches and provides some truly great buildings and units to muck around with - it's great to see how modern units fair against archers and knights. So there we have it, if you love god games and their ilk then you'll be engrossed from the get go. The only thing that'll keep you off it is the promise of summer sun - but we all know that can be a short lived thing here in good old blighty so you could be glued to this for some time to come.
Only for the novice June 17, 2008 Dan Griffiths (London United Kingdom) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
Well I too preordered this game, couldn't wait as I have been a fan of the 'sids' games for years. At first I was impressed, great grapghics intuitive interface (although a little clumsy trying to deselct units) and a version of my favourite type of game I could play slouched on the sofa not bent over a keyboard. So I sat down at 12 noon as I had a day off work and thought i would play at King level to start, but to my dismay had it finsihed by 10pm and was utterly dissapointed. As said earlier in previous reviews the map is tiny, the developement of the tech far too quick (you never really get the chance to use half the units as time moves so fast, I had gunpowder rifles and before my first unit was used had tanks and aircraft. I thought I would try on a harder level but the logic of the higher levels seems to be to just make the opposition win battles consistently when the odds are against them wherear the old Civ I loved was about size and oponents. This game will be great for the novice, someone who wants to try his hand at Strategy but for me they should have allowed those of us more used to the old games the option to ramp up the map, complicate the tech tree and micro manage to our hearts content. So in short, if an avid Civ fan be very careful before you buy, if new to the genre this is an ideal entry level game. Me I am praying for an update. If I could sum it up this is Draughts (chequers to the US readers) against Chess, same board but a lot simpler. (still never been a console strategy game as good as the old Atari Eastern Front)
Civ Revolution June 5, 2008 Mr. F. Martinez (Royal Britannia) 8 out of 12 found this review helpful
First i have played the game (Demo) and i must say that it is actually very good, the control system is perfect with menus easy to access and the advisors bringing any problems that need immediate attention. The reason for the loss of a star is that in order to make the game play better it has been over simplified. If you have played previous civ games on pc play a demo first because it is different and some people will not like it simplified ideas, finally the advisors can be really annoying but i think that this may have been to help people in the demo. Try it and see.
Will fill a void but a missed opportuniy for the single player... June 16, 2008 A. Kaynama (Ealing, London United Kingdom) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
OK first, a quick description of the demographic that will relate most with my thoughts. You are probably in your 30s/40s and you have played Civ 1/2/3/4 at some stage and found them to be real jewels in a gaming world dominated that became to be dominated by younger and time-rich players who crave to shoot/blow/hack/slash their way into instant gratification. Don't get me wrong, I also love shooting/blowing/hacking/slashing but I was schooled in the old way of gaming which required more than fast hand/eye co-ordination. First timers are advised a try before you buy policy. OK on to the game. For people who have played it before on PCs and loved it: there will be a lot of you that will see this as a waste of money. Its too condensed, too simplified and too short and you will in most probabilities revert back to the PC games to get a proper fix. For the ones that hate turn-based or srtategy games, this will not change your mind and you would best be served by steering clear. For all others, and especailly the one that like to have a quick thrash around in Civ without getting too bogged down in micromanagement, it does the job, although one will graduate up the difficulty levels quite quickly to make the games challenging. I would highlight the fact that quick games are a bonus for me. The PC games caused a lot of grief in my household and I would say that it also resulted in late nights, lost weekends, angry girlfriends/wives/boyfriends etc in other homes. As a father of young children who demand a lot of my time, the ability to pick this up at 8 and be finished by 10 or 11 is very good. The intuitive interface made it easy to jump right in and play. However, there is a major flaw which will limit how many 2 hour games you will have in the future - the small map size. At best you will be able to build 4 or 5 cities before you run out of room. Then it becomes a matter of kill or be killed as there will be at least one guy who will be attacking you and before you know it you have razed his cities to the ground (or vice versa) and you are mobilising to annihilate the second guy. I think they missed a trick here by not allowing you to customise the map size and perhaps it was a development issue. Nonetheless, if the map could have been twice the size I think it would have benefitted the game. I have not yet played the multi-player game and I suspect all the features will lend themselves to playing agaist more 'intelligent' opposition. So a second review may be required once I have had experience of the multi-player. So, to sum up: will not please die-hard fans, but will allow time-poor gamers to have some fun civ experience, but will soon tire of the format.
This is going to be the best online-enabled rts game for the xbox 360 so far. May 20, 2008 jimboid1 (london) 4 out of 26 found this review helpful
This is going to be the best online-enabled rts game for the xbox 360 so far. I haven't a clue why the other reviewer gave this game 3 stars because 'it had no information about it' Reviews are here on the amazon website to rate the quality of the item, not about its lack of information about the game. This title has been tailored by Sid Meier exclusively for console use, so we won't be seeing a clumsy PC to console rts port. The controls for the game are apparently extrememely well put together for console use and therefore we are going to see a strategy game that I think will top all others on xbox 360 so far. It is aimed mainly at online play and apparently it appears to be simplified compared to its PC cousin. But simplified in a way which means you will be able to pick up the game fairly quickly without the often tiresome, complicated tutorials often associated with rts games of this calibre. Easy to pick up, but it will take hours of gameplay to master, whether it be working out how to keep your townsfolk happy or where to build your next city. Civilization works from the ground up. You start with a builder, choose your spot to build a city and everything snowballs from then on. The online play will make you even more efficient as you begin to master the controls and how to position your armies. This game is going to rock.
