View larger. | Story Alex Mercer was once a scientist for the prominent medical research corporation, Gentek, but one day he wakes up to find himself a shape-shifter with absolute mastery over his genetic structure, but no memory of how this came to be. Taking to the streets of New York City in search of answers, he quickly encounters a web of lies and vows to rip the truth from those who have hidden it from him and the world. A few other things that Alex also learns quickly is that he is not alone in possessing amazing abilities, that there is a secret war brewing in New York City and he is on its front lines. A deadly infection has spilled out of control and the government has seized the media to stop the spread of information and has placed New York under quarantine as martial law is instated; igniting a firestorm of combat, carnage and death. As he roams the city, he faces an ever growing army of infected creatures warped and changed by the virus. As it spreads, the virus overwrites the genetics of those it infects, warping and changing their form into something else, something that seems to have been planned. The answers he seeks appear to be tied to the virus, so he rushes to discover the truth behind it, but standing against him and his goal is Project Blackwatch. An elite army specialist force, they are tasked with halting the spread of the virus at any cost and are eager to bring Alex in dead or alive to determine his connection to it. It would seem that they are potentially both enemy and ally to Alex's cause. Will Alex assist Blackwatch in its hunt, or join forces with the virus and subjugate humanity, pushing his powers to the limit as the genetic shackles of humanity fall by the wayside? That choice is up to the player in Prototype. Gameplay In Prototype players engage in 'Deceive or Destroy' gameplay. This allows gamers the choice to either blend in with the population and covertly progress through the story, or fully unleash Alex’s powers, and move through New York City like a walking slaughterhouse, taking control of military vehicles, and causing destruction at every turn. Although Alex is literally strong enough to fling people and large objects around easily, his most intriguing power is his ability to 'consume' people. In doing this he acquires their memories, abilities, and their appearance. New memories help him to solve the mystery of how he got the way he is, while new appearances allow him to shape-shift into new useful forms at will and abilities allow him to manoeuvre in parts of the game requiring specific skills in specific situations. In addition, Alex's consumption of people also facilitates his ability to transform his physical body and manipulate his senses. Most weapons acquired in this way are outgrowths from his appendages like exaggerated blades, shields, whips and claws used for brutal close combat, but consumption also allows for powerful abilities like thermal vision, which provides for vision through smoke and obstacles, as well as 'infected vision' with which Alex can detect hotspots of viral infection throughout the city. Key Features: - Fast and Deadly Combat - Shape-shift your body to the situation at hand ... from claws to blades to hammers to whips, as you choose the right weapon for the situation. Change to shield or armour for defence or use advanced sensory powers (thermal vision, infected vision) to track your enemies.
- Over-the-top Locomotion - Seamlessly and fluidly bound from building to building, run up walls, bounce off cars and everything in your path. Adaptive parkour lets you move freely through the open-world environments of New York City.
- Unique Disguising Abilities - Consume anyone at anytime, take on their appearance and assume their memories and special abilities.
- Deep Conspiracy Driven Storyline - Wake up with no memory of the past ... just mysterious powers and a link to a town in Idaho. Delve into the mysteries of your origin, the true nature of your power and your part in a conspiracy 40 years in the making.
- Parkour Inspired In-game Movement - Alex Mercer's movements are inspired by Parkour, a mostly urban activity bordering on both art and martial arts that aims at moving the human body from one point to another as smoothly, efficiently and quickly as possible. Recent examples of it gained worldwide attention in chase scenes in the 2007 film "Casino Royale."
- Xbox LIVE Achievements - Collect a wealth of Xbox LIVE achievements and build your gamer score as you play.

This game is very violent, and very fun! You control Alex Mercer, a monsterous man that has been geneticly altered to become a deadly weapon. The story takes place in New York City, and is about Alex seeking answers, and revenge in a city being ravaged by a deadly virus that turns citizens into zombies!
The game is free-roam, much like Grand Theft Auto, but with the ability to ramage the streets, hacking pedestrians, and enemeies alike, into tiny pieces. Missions appear as icons on the map, they include story missions, and bonus missions such as killing so many enemeies in the time limit (much like the Kill Frenzy missions in GTA). Alex has a range of attacks and abilities, such as turning his arms into hammers, or deadly claws. You can run up buildings, reaching great heights within the city scape. Most actions gain you EP, whih you use to upgrade Alex's many powers.
Alex gathers information, not by interrogation, but my simply consuming the individual and absorbing their memories. You can consume anybody at anytime, regaining health and taking on their form for a disguise. The action changes throught the game, with the military and the infected struggling for control of the city, and you will find yourself in the thick of the action often. This is acknowledged in the achievements, as there is one for killing 50 characters in 5 seconds!
This game is great fun to play, and bonus missions and collectable items will keep you busy for hours. If you are put off by gorey scenes, then this game is definatly not for you!

An excellent game June 20, 2009 S. Mallinson (Leicester, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Thoroughly enjoyable sandbox type game where you can explore the city of New York as it becomes increasingly overrun by infected zombies once a terrifying virus has been released. Discover who is behind it through a varied campaign mode with lots of different enemy types. Upgrade your mutant powers as you progress through the game, allowing you to tackle the various bosses etc. Lots of side missions and collectables to keep you occupied once you've finished the main campaign.
Surprising tough on normal mode although there is an easy mode option as well and 'hard' mode which unlocks once you've completed the game on normal.
Once you begin to power up I found the game totally engrossing. If you liked the freedom and playability of Crackdown or Mercenaries 2 then you'll enjoy this.
Thoroughly recommended.
Good But not Great June 16, 2009 A. Smith (UK) 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
I have completed the main story line and done all the side missions, so i have a feel of the game and i have to say
For the first few hrs it is the best game ever, but after awhile you get board and frustrated you do the same stuff over and over the only differance is the enemys are alot harder and breaking in to the bases near the end of the game are nearly imposible
I addmit it is a good game but then i found that i was forcing my self to play it, in order to complete it and if you have to do that then it isn't a great game
Prototype is a game that thrills and dissapoints in almost equal measures July 6, 2009 Timo King (Bristol, United Kingdom) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I find the title 'prototype' slightly ironic seeing as that's exactly how this game feels - like it's an unfinished work-in-progress. Prototype has lots going for it, with lots of ambition and great potential - but it never seems to fully capitilise on any of them individually = leaving for an occasionally bland experience overall.
The background story and setting is generally quite good. It's nothing groundbraking, but there's definitely something intrguing about the angle it trys pitch. Unfortunately, how the story is told and the lead characters is tragically dull. No, in fact, these are some of the worst cutscenes and characters to be seen in a video game. The main plot is truly boring and is always hard to take seriously.
Which is in such stark contrast to the 'background story' detailing how the in-game virus has spread. There are opportunities for you to consume people in the game and see their memories which relate to the background story. These are shown via some very artistic and generally interesting flashbacks. These are really great, so it's baffling as to why the main story and characters are so catastrophic.
The gameplay follows suit. Massively ambitious, but overall underwhelming. There are tons of different powers and moves in this game, to the point where you'll never remember them all. Some of the animations are very well done and it does have a few moves which are very satisfying. However issues with camera and 'lock-on's cause a lot of trouble in the heat of a big fight. This means that eventhough you know lots of the controls and are confident with them - you don't always feel 'in control' of the battles. Fighting can turn from a well thought out sequence into mindless button mashing and hoping.
This said, there is a lot of variety - both in moving around and combat. There's also the ability to control/hijack tanks and helicopters. This is actually one of the most useful ways of fighting enemies.
The graphics are another victim to the half-finished mentality. Prototype isn't a game that looks 'bad', it just looks massively 'bland'. Some parts of the graphics and animations look really good, whilst environments and vehicles generally look dull. Never before have I seen such a contrst of graphics within the same game. Again, it's not that they're particularly bad - it's just that they're so underwhelming.
Overall, Prototype is not a bad game. I've been quite harsh on it, which is deserved, but I hadn't really explained that this game is fun. Running/Flying around the (very bland) city is a lot of fun, combat does hve some great moments and satisfying moves. But overall, eventhough there's lots to enjoy, you can't help but feel like it could be so so much more. The game was obviously too ambitious for the developers to handle.. and that's such a missed opportunity.
I DO reccomend this game to people, but I'd steer away from paying the full retail price. Wait until it comes down and it's defintiely worth getting. The game isn't massively long, but you can spend a lot of time on it - so it's not bad value anyway.
From an experience stand point, this game really is dissapointing.. but it's still a game worth playing.
Anyone for Carnage? March 8, 2010 Dario McGeachy (Exeter, England) Sweet. Jesus. How to describe a game where you can kill an old lady, eat her, take on her identity, run up the nearest skyscraper and then elbow drop off the top on to the horrified and confused onlookers below? Sound fun? Cause that's only the beginning of the carnage in probably the most over the top insane game i have ever had the joy to play.
Are you the kind of person who, when playing GTA, treats the missions as kind of a side project, preferring mindless destruction instead? Well this is a bit like that, on steroids, in the middle of an apocalypse, and you've got super powers, and a bats**t mental moral compass. In short. Amazing.
Of course all this would count for nothing if the game itself was crap. But it's not.
The game looks good. The story is fine. The controls don't get in the way and the sub-missions are satisfying and challenging. The game is more than proficient in all these area's without really excelling but then again, when you can throw cars at helicopters who really cares.
If this sounds like your kind of thing then buy it. Buy it now and you will be happily bathed in blood and showered in scattered limbs for weeks to come. Lovely
