3 out of 5 stars Silver for Beijing, Gold for Athens   June 27, 2008

It's the olympics again and as usual there is a video game to go with it.
Athens 2004 set a bench mark for Olympic video games as it improved the gameplay from Sydney 2000 alot, making it accessable for every type of gamer. Beijing has made improvements but has also altered areas that worked fine on the previous game.
Beijing consists of all the Olympic events featured in the last game and Sydney 2000, with many more new events included. There is something for everyone.
My problem is the controls. The button bashing element, which is quite simple, seems much the same as Athens 2004, but try the hammer throw, Judo and Kayaking. These events are very difficult indeed and are near impossible. It takes hours of practice to get to grips with the dificult controls. In some cases the instructions aren't made that clear either, although you can access the tutorial for each event before the action kicks off. Its certain to say that you can't pick up and play this game straight away. Athens controls were challenging at times, but were much easier to pick up. But it is fair to say, some evlemts in this game are easier then others. The controls will certainly test the strength of the controllers.
The visuals are brilliant and the detail of the players and their surroundings are amazing. The menus aren't the best I've seen, but then again that doesn't matter.
The internet gaming will be excellent, when slight glitches are fixed. Your best times are only included in the online scoreboard after training mode, and not in competition, something that needs seeing too. Whilst online you can spend alot of time waiting around for everyone to say they are ready to start, instead of an automatic counter. Also when you start an event, you can be waiting forever for the gun to sound, causing online gamers to shout random things through your headsets.
The online element will be great when it gets fixed, but for now there is still the indepth single player game to play, which is very challenging. Overall, the game is enjoyable, especially when playing with a friend, but it isn't a great improvement on Athens 2004. If you have that, don't bother.

5 out of 5 stars Beijing = Brilliant!   June 30, 2008

I have just recently purchased a PS3 ... However I pre-ordered this game here on Amazon before I actually bought the PS3 ... I was *that* excited! lol

Initial impressions ... "this is too hard" I was getting disqualified in everything, jumping 3m in the long jump and as for the running lol 8th place! The controls take some getting used to, and I'm improving on all the events.

The graphics are superb, playing it in HD it's so crisp. It looks like the actual Olympics on the television.

If you're a fan of sporting games, you'll love this. I noticed another review stating they prefered Athens over this game, of course it was an excellent game which I can't fault, I just think this game is the next generation, the people look more realistic and the gameplay is definately more challanging.

10/10!

3 out of 5 stars Potentially awesome but a few bugs let this down....patch Sega?   June 27, 2008

Hi, I received this game yesterday (not from Amazon) and it is nearly everything I hoped for bar a few major bugs/annoyances. For example I ran the 100m in a world record time of 00:00 due to a glitch online and now I'm no.1 in the world and will stay there forever unless Sega decide to patch the game and reset the leaderboards (which I hope, but doubt). Also, if you get a PB online it doesn't appear on the leaderboards unless you go back to training mode and run the same event, which somehow then uploads the record to the worldwide leaderboard. Surely the leaderboard should update automaticaaly?! A few freezes and crazy glitches online but probably due to one player's dodgey connection. A great effort and worth the buy if you're a fan of this kind of game, but a patch would make this game a hit. Ez Hayz ;)

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Game & Great Competition   July 8, 2008

I have had this game for just under a week and like one or two of the reviews I've read, some of the game controls were at first just to difficult to get to grips with, and also I found the starting system very awkward. It takes a a fair bit of time to get used to them and once you are, well then the game falls into place very well indeed. The career/team mode is really well thought out. You can't get world records straight away with novice athletes, but as you get better and progress through the game, you improve your team and it's attributes, and it makes you think also as some attributes are far more important for some events than others (so you need to check what events are lined up for your team for the next day of competition so you can best decide which attributes to improve of your team as you only get a certain amount of points each day, which you earn by your results, to spread accross the 5 attributes which are power, speed, accuracy, agility and stamina). The online competiton is absolutely fantastic. I just wish people wouldn't quit so easily when they don't do too well in a couple of events, you don't get any good by quitting. The great thing about competing online is that you can choose from 1 event to do to all 38. There are no limits but be prepared for a very long haul if you pick all 38 events to do online (if 8 players play until the end of all events, you'll be there for a good 6 hours!! and probably more). I have gotten pretty good at this game ( I scored over 152,000 in Olympic Mode but for some reason the score didn't register online so I'll be doing that again!) and it has taken a fair bit of practice and playing. There are no bugs that I have come accross as yet, the graphics are superb, and the gameplay is very addictive. The person who rated Athens 2004 better than this needs to give this game a proper go because Beijing 2008 is just the best game of it's kind ever made.
