Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The smaller, sleeker version of the original Nintendo DS, the Nintendo DS Lite combines dual screen action with Touch Screen interaction, providing the player with a unique gaming experience. The system also includes wireless communication technology, allowing gamers to join their friends in multiplayer games, or use the system's embedded PictoChat software to send messages and drawings to each other. The Nintendo DS Lite is revolutionising handheld gaming. With two super-sharp, backlit LCD screens, the Nintendo DS Lite offers a groundbreaking new approach to gaming. Each 3-inch screen is capable of producing true 3D graphics; the DS has the power to produce even more advanced visuals than the Nintendo 64 could display. Plus you can adjust the screens' brightness in four different levels to adapt to different lighting conditions. The possibilities are limitless - one screen can be used to show the main action, while another might be used as a map, inventory, or secondary viewpoint - or both screens can be used simultaneously to depict huge boss characters! With a powerful rechargeable lithium ion battery pack and recharger included with every Nintendo DS Lite, the system offers up to 19 hours of play on a single recharge*; so there's no need for additional battery packs. Nintendo DS Lite recharges to full capacity in three hours - one hour less than Nintendo DS. The system also includes a clock, calendar and alarm functions, and you can select other details like the colour of the background screen, your birthday and your nickname. *Nintendo DS Lite battery life is dependent on brightness setting used.

Amazon.co.uk Review
In a nutshell:
It may have taken the world by storm with its huge range of genuinely innovative new games but there's no denying that the Nintendo DS is not exactly the most portable of portable consoles. That's all changed now with this sleek and sexy update.

The lowdown:
When the Nintendo DS was first announced it was dismissed by many as a white elephant - with a gimmicky interface and underpowered graphics. Over 15 million sales later and the story is a little different. The DS Lite is fully compatible with all existing Nintendo DS (and Game Boy Advance) games but it's smaller, sleeker and lighter - with a new design that perfectly matches the Nintendo Wii console. The most impressive feature is the new backlit screens which offer the sharpest image ever seen on a portable console. The DS Lite is available in three separate colours: White, Black and Pink.

Most exciting feature:
The DS Lite now has four brightness settings - the highest is brighter than even the PSP and is clearly visible in any lighting condition. That sound? That'll be Sony executives running to the hills - wearing sunglasses.

Since you ask:
The Nintendo DS is the fast selling console ever in Japan. When the DS Lite was released, it sold out instantly, with queues of over 1,000 people a common sight.

The bottom line:
The DS gets a face lift to become Nintendo's best looking portable ever. - Harrison Dent

5 out of 5 stars THE nintendo handheld of the century   May 18, 2006

I imported my DS Lite from japan, yes... it's here. right next to me as i type this is the Nintendo DS lite sits snugly in it's case. i think it's appropriate to adress the differences between this and the old DS so i'll cut the ramalamadingdong and get right to the good stuff.

The look

As soon as i opened the box from lik-sang containing a DS lite (enamel navy), a case and some screen protectors. i knew that the DSL would trounce the larger DS, and how right i was. the lite has a shiny finish (quite prone to fingerprints, i have to say) on the outside with a smooth matte interior. the buttons seem to be placed much more comfortably and are a mix between the GB micro's "push spring" button and the old DS's clicky buttons, the D pad is the same in that respect, but smaller than the old DS's: this makes it easier to play as the motions seem much more fluid.

The Stylus
I'm sure you've heard this all before, but the stylus for the DS lite is larger, both in girth and length. it's one of those things that you can't truly understand untill you hold it. it feels amazing. much more comfortable than the 'toothpick' supplied with the original DS, this makes playing games like 'Trauma center' and 'Metroid Prime: Hunters' all the more enjoyable.

The Screens
The screens of the DS lite are what realy sold me to getting one in the first place and i was not dissapointed. top screen is a completely different type of screen compared to the original DS. This was due to nintendo actually custom making a LCD screen to fit their needs exactly. and both screens simply scream when you turn the DSL on. the colours are incredible, any pictures you have seen on the internet cannot describe how clear the two screens are. when you play a game on the DS lite. you KNOW it's the DS lite because the colours literally jump out at you.

The touch screen is has a completely different feel to it, the stylus glides much smoother on the bottom screen than it did with the old DS. why? because, to my knowlege, the plexiglass from the original has been removed, replaced by something better/clearer, it makes MPH games that more enjoyable when you get to that point where you can headshot kill someone with the imperialist from one end of the arena to the other without using the zoom, yes. it's that good (btw, happened once, total fluke. lol)

the feel
When you hold the DS lite it feels a little odd at first because, if you're like me, you'll be used to holding a heavy piece of equpiment. yes, the DS lite is lighter, but it still feels solid. the edges of the DS lite ARE a bit on the hard side (quite sqaure-ish) but one you get used to it, there's no stopping the DS lite's WOW factor.
they've obvously been busy over at Ninendo HQ figuring how to cram all the DS's hardware into a smaller package.
This brings me nicely over to the GBA slot. now, we all know by now that GBA games protrude about 1cm when they're in the DS lite. but that in no way affects the gameplay. but, to keep the ultra sleek design, nintendo have supplied a small 'filler cartridge' (how long before THIS gets lodged behind the sofa?)

Overall
The DS lite, finally, is something comparable to the PSP. when the original DS came out, one of the driving factors for many people not to buy it was that it was simply not good looking (trust me, i know this, i work in a shop that sells such things) but now the DS lite is on the horizon for the USA and finally Europe. This piece of gear pathes the way for the Wii, with the same basic design and innovation. I have to praise nintendo for what they have done with the gaming industry, i realy do. because they have revolutionised the way that people look at the gaming industry.

nothing can compare to the feeling of finding your first coconut washed up on your beach in animal crossing. Or powersliding around a corner in mario kart to take the lead. Or even owning someone on Metroid Prime Hunters over Wifi.
In my opinion, Nintendo have done it again, just as they did it with the GB micro before... and the GBA SP before that. Hell! they've been remodelling handhelds ever since the release of the gameboy pocket!
Ihope you 've enjoyed reading this as much as i enjoyed writing it, but now... mario kart awaits.
thanks for reading.

I've only had this a few weeks and I've only got one game, but I'm in love with it already. I'm in my 50s and this is my first games console - yes, this is the one I was waiting for! Its main attractions are the size - light and truly pocket-sized - easy-to-use controls, bright screen and range of games. The battery life is good too, and the unit's case seems fairly robust. A real winner.

5 out of 5 stars Nintendo DS Lite beats PS2 & PSP   August 13, 2006

Being disabled I spend a lot of time at home and liked the idea of being a gamer. In 2005 I purchased a PS2 and a number of games only to dislike the controller and the amount of moves / key sequences you had to remember to play the games, it was not fun but a chore to play them thus I sold it.

I then bought a PSP looking to play games on the move and in hospital. However I found this unit awkward to hold and very awkward to play whilst using all buttons. In addition the thumb joystick on the unit is (IMO) a nightmare to use and the low battery life made use on the move poor. So guess what, yes, I sold this unit and games as well.

I then stayed away from games units and played online at MSN for a while until one day my wife and I were shopping and saw the Nintendo DS Lite. A very helpful sales assistance then showed us the unit compare to the old DS. The DS Lite is smaller, lighter, has better screen brightness and a more secure hinge; basically what the DS should have been in the 1st place.

So I bought one.

Home and taking it out of the box, it was very easy to set up (1st winning point IMO). I then played Dr Kawashima's Brain Training which I realy enjoyed. Use of the sylus as compared to the many key sequences you have to remember with Playstations was a joy to use, nothing easier than tapping a screen with the stylus. The different challenges were fun and got all the family competing against each other - great family fun, we now look forward to competing against each other every day and have all become quite good at Sudoko.

I have also enjoyed playing 'Truama centre under the knife','Over the hedge' & 'Mario'. What I especialy like about the DS lite is the split screen and the use of the sylus. It opens up the game and makes the playing experience more fulfiling and enjoyable. Depending on what screen brightness you have the unit on you can get towards 15 hours of battery life, great for trips in the car. In addition you can play wirelessly with friends and online with other gamers around the globe.

So in summary from a 'standard' gamer, yes standard, I am not a hard core, online 24/7 gamer but someone who plays games with family & friends for fun. The DS Lite is a fantastic unit with a good range of games for all types of gamers. In addition the cost of the unit and the games is competitive compared to other offerings i.e. PS, Xbox and PC.

Are you wanting the experience the fun and competition of game playing then I urge you to seriously consider the DS Lite. Why chose a more expensive and more complex unit when there is no need to. Why get a unit that does 'many things in the box' eg. plays DVDs, most of us have DVD players. Instead, keep it simple and go for a core games unit the realy delivers - the DS Lite.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Handheld - Great Games   May 24, 2006

I imported a dark blue one few weeks ago and I am very very happy with it.

I had the original since launch day, and despite my huge collection of consoles the DS has all but taken over.

Although this version is great, the size and screens make it just perfect (plus on the lower brightness settings you can get up to 19hrs out of the battery - and that's still much better viewing than on the original), it's the games that really make this the handheld king.

I regularly meet up in the local pub and play with my friends, and with the free on-line service, anyone that cannot make it, still get to join in.

The games, well there is just about anything you could want. From classic re-makes such as New Super Mario Bros, to full on FPS on-line Quake style fragg fest Metriod. Puzzle fans will love this system, with Tetris, Meteos, Magnetica (AKA Zuma) Brain Training and Zoo Keeper to name a few.

Racing fans will love Mario Kart, plus there is a good version of the ever popular Need for Speed.

Nintendo fans will love the stuff revealed at E3. Star Fox DS, New Zelda DS, Diddy Kong Racing, Chibi Robo DS, Children of Mana, Elite Beat Agents (a western version of the potty, but perfect, Ouendan) Hotel Dusk and Yoshi's Island 2.

What the DS also offers is something completely different. Games such as Animal Crossing, Truma Centre, Rub Rabbits, Wario Ware Touched, Phoenix Wright and the cute but compelling Nintendogs all provide a diverse and high quality choice of gaming.

While the console is great, and the Lite just builds on this, it is the games that have made this system the success it is. I hope the re-design will encourage those who thought the old system was ugly, too big, or just for kids will try it, you really will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars DS Lite, Alright!!!   May 23, 2006

I have to agree with everyone here, the first review is an excellent one and does full justice to the DS redesign (kudos to you!!!)

I imported one from Hong-Kong, enamel navy(which I'm pleased to say, seems to be an Asian only colour, so nice and unique) and it's a thing of beauty. The screens are brighter than bright and it just has the look and feel of a super high quality product. It is a beast for finger prints and smears as the outer casing is really glossy but hey, it's awesome.

If you can, get yourself a DS Lite. It's really worth it and blows away it's 'older' brother. The games come to life with vibrant colour and the whole design is just, well....excellent.

It will sit happily with the up and coming Wii as they are similar in their design scope......well done Ninty...innovation and design will win out in the end, and the DS Lite is just another step in the right direction....again!!!!
