Amazon.co.uk Review The promotional blurb for Codemasters' latest racing game, TOCA Race Driver 2, makes an awful lot out of the in-game cinematics, the wealth of game options and the fancy new damage engine. However, what is also crucial to the game's success is this: TOCA Race Driver 2 plays like a dream. It follows the narrative-based approach of its predecessor, as you become a genuine character in the game. That takes you from the early races where you attempt to make your name, through to the big championships where you then have to prove it. There are plenty of championships to take on, too, and as with the wide selection of vehicles waiting to be driven, these are gradually unlocked as you make progress.Even in single-player mode, though, the races are genuinely immersive and wildly entertaining. Sure, the game punishes your mistakes, but that's as it should be, and it rarely leaves you at the point where you don't want to have another go after a winning position has gone horrendously wrong. Fortunately, the AI of the computer-controlled cars is pretty much spot on too--they make mistakes, they adopt different driving styles, and only on occasions betray their non-human status. Online, the game is even better. Twelve players at a time can compete and it's here where the TOCA Race Driver 2 is at its most exhilarating. And then there are the production values. From the stunningly realised cars and courses, through to the tightly woven voiceovers and gloriously cinema-like action replays, it barely puts a foot wrong. Not only then is the game a joy to play, it's also a joy to look at. The only minor niggle is that those who bought the previous game may have wanted a little bit more from the sequel, but that's not likely to stop them enjoying it. TOCA Race Driver 2 is an action-packed, compulsive and long-lasting racing game that's very unlikely to disappoint. --Simon Brew

The best just keeps getting better!!! April 16, 2004 15 out of 24 found this review helpful
this game has once again gone to the limits of racing games! the graphics are the best out there by far. the attention to detail is out of this world. the best part about this game is the damage. they have made this mre realistic than ever before. for example is you collide with a wall head on at a high speed your race will be over. this game is full of things to do and unlock. the enables the gamer to play for hours on end! an absolute class game!!!! well worth the money!!!!

And it's GO-GO-GO for Toca Race Driver 2 ,storming through to number 1. The first Toca will be nothing compared to this, quite possibly the best racing game ever to come out with Truck Racing aswell something to look forward to. If you take my advice you will go out and buy it because I know that I will. The first Toca was great and this new one being alot better, it will be hard to beat! It is one of the most detailed games with authentic damage and other drivers who want that win as much as you, other games such as Sega GT , I think will not match up to this. Every type of racing that you can think of is included , you will have hours of fun on this with the career mode, single races, more than two player races and a whole bunch of cars to choose , from some of the world's best company's. This game is just simply 10/10.

Half way between a simulator and an arcade racer we have TOCA Race Driver 2. Lots of cars, tracks and types of racing offer although a total lack of TOCA Touring Cars which is odd given the title. Great graphics, sound, no real complaints and the storyline aspect has been given a total makeover and is much improved since TOCA 1.The vehicle handling is absolutely spot on and just what I expected although there isn't much difference between the types of racing. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing because you can go from one type of racing to the next without too much trouble. One of the features that really helps this game and needs a mention is redefinable controls. Quite why more X-BOX games don't allow you to set up the controller exactly how you want it is a mystery to me, a big thumbs up to Codemasters for this. Overall one the best racing games around, if not the best.
Toca Racer 2 May 20, 2004 STEVEN CHAPPELL 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Toca 2 is the Ultimate racer to date and it will take some beating. The speed is awesome, the graphics top notch, the AI is superb and the amount of different championships and races make for a great difficulty curve. The cars themselves are amazingly detailed and the handling is as close as you will get to the real thing. Forget Grand Turismo, get Toca 2 and experience the drive of your life.
Fun?!?!? May 11, 2004 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
After enjoying PGR2 so much, having previously not been the biggest racing game fan, i couldnt resist buying this after seeing the online reviews and glowing "9/10's" which seemed to be everywhere i looked. Put simply its not a patch on PGR2. One of the main selling points, as far as i could see, was the variety of cars but the majority are just plain awful. There are no problems with the cut scenes, which seemed to plague the previous attempts, but when u play u just dont get any enjoyment. I didnt want to give this 1 star cause its not a 1 star game. However, dont expect anything as good as PGR2.
