Amazon.co.uk Review A modern version of Capcom's Ghosts 'n' Goblins series, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory is one of those rare games that offers a solid update of a classic arcade title. This 3-D platform game delivers all the charm of its 2-D side-scrolling ancestor with current gameplay mechanics. In his latest adventure, Maximo returns to his kingdom to find it in disarray; his formerly trusted advisor, Achille, has banished the four sorceresses that govern the land and forced Maximo's true love to marry him. To save the day Maximo must run, jump, and fight his way through five environments spanning more than 25 levels. Like his predecessors, Maximo must constantly worry about upgrading his armour and weapons. Play the game skilfully and you'll have a heavily armed fighting machine. Take too many hits and Maximo will be fighting villains in his heart-covered boxers. Graphics-wise the game is very strong. The animations are smooth, the textures are rich, and the environments are detailed. Sound is an absolute joy. The effects are humorous, while the music is fantastic: the developer has done an excellent job of taking the melodies from the original game and creating updated variations that are equally memorable. Although some will find the gameplay repetitive and many will find the boss fights too easy, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory is an excellent 15 to 20 hours of platform goodness. --Raymond M Padilla

A great game, worthy of its heritage April 8, 2002 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
You really couldn't ask for a better update of Capcom's classic Ghouls 'n Ghosts series into 3D. Which came as a bit of a surprise after the slightly awful Strider 2, Capcom's last attempt to dust off one of their old classics. Maximo has everything that made Ghouls 'n Ghosts great, plus all the depth of a more modern game. All the fantastic environments, quirky visual humour and old school vertigo-inducing platform jumping of the classic series are there. In Maximo they have been melded to some hack-and-slash-and-spellcasting combat action, and it just works so well. Looks great, sounds great, plays like a dream. Downers: the camera is a bit tricky at times, but far less so than other games like it. Also, if you played and liked the first MediEvil game, you'll be right at home with Maximo, but it actually plays a lot better than MediEvil.
Good Clean Platforming Fun March 5, 2002 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Well I bought this game on the day of its release, purely on the strength of it being a "remake" of "Ghosts & Goblins", and I have to say that I'm not in the least bit dissapointed. A very nice game graphically (very japanese anime), plays well with the difficulty nearing that of the original (But not quite as hard). I now have had the game for 4 days heres what I like and dislike:LIKE: Graphics, Playability, Locations, Powerups, rewarding play, not to linear gameplay, Funny cutscenes. Looks to to a long game as I've on completed 10% after 3 hours. DISLIKE: Only save on one area, which your at about once every 30 to 40 minutes. Camera angle on player can sometimes give bad visability, which can lead to misjudging jumps and fighting the evil dead!! All in all good clean platforming fun that plays well, but only buy if you like your platform games, and you dont mind a LITTLE bit of frustration.
Fun but difficult later on August 14, 2002 MR M J PARKER 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is a solid 3D platformer, with crisp visuals, fluid gameplay and well designed levels. I'm not a real platform fan but I enjoyed the game, until the 3rd (ice) section when it became too difficult for me hence very frustrating. Hardcore platform fans will probably delight at the sinking platforms, ever tougher bad guys and sheer drops, but I got annoyed. Good game though, well worth a look.
Best Ghost n' Goblins game ever? March 3, 2002 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is easily the best Ghost and Goblins game to date. The Graphics are stunning, and although the game may look slightly childish this game certainly is not. The diffuculty level is just right, it's not to easy and it's not so hard that you get no fun out of it. Maximo is so fun that once you have eventually completed it you can start the whole game time and time again. Overall Capcom have produced a brilliant adventure that is miles ahead of games such as Baldurs Gate.
Platforming at it's simple best April 4, 2002 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Truly brilliant platformers are not commonplace on the PlayStation2. IMO, Jak and Daxter was the strongest contender in the genre... until Maximo came along...Maximo is great fun - the graphics are clean and crisp with some lovely comedic touches. Where else can you control a character who wields a large sword whilst wandering around in heart-print boxer shots?? The other reason I really like Maximo is that it demands good game-play in order to suceed. You can't do it by luck alone but you equally don't get punished unless you make a mistake. There will undoubtedly be people who don't have the patience to play this game to it's fullest, but it is rewarding for those who do. It's well-rounded, fun, has reasonable life-span (but limited re-play value) and is generally a good title to own. Simple, effective fun and a worthy addition to any gamer's collection.
