Rose Troche's first film is a breezy, unrelentingly charming if flyweight study of female friendship and the usual relationship traumas. Guinevere Turner plays Max, an aspiring writer, (she's also the film's co-writer, and co-scripted the screenplay of the recent film American Psycho, in which she came under Christian Bale's knife). Max and her friends Ely, Kia and Daria spend a lot of time talking, cooking, and generally hanging out with that studied coolness that only people in independent movies can perfect. A tentative romance develops, and if not much else happens, at least it doesn't happen stylishly, in trendy black-and-white with snazzy dialogue. Most of all Go Fish deserves credit for barely deigning to engage with the fact that all its protagonists are gay, as if this were just another natural, everyday thing, like being left-handed or tall. There are seemingly few lesbian texts or films which are able to break down the barriers of mainstreem ideals but here is a book and a film which does exactly that. From start to end, this book is engaging. It's characters are real and recognisable. The dialogue is natural and honest and the storyline is magnificent. Anyone who is currently breathing is sure to relate to this funny and at times un-nervingly familiar world of love, life and relationships. Don't pass this one on the shelf - grab it with both hands and let its words course through your veins and electrify your soul - ten stars - five for courage and insight!!!

'Go Fish', an honest and funny film, was one of the first lesbian features of a new generation of films dubbed "New Queer Cinema". With its roots firmly in the low budget, D.I.Y. aesthetic of filmmaking it proved that lesbian cinema audiences were potentially huge and wanted more than anything to see themselves represented in a proud and intelligent way. 'Go Fish' has a lot of underground appeal, it's 16mm black and white documentary feel takes us into the personal world of its characters. Symbolic imagery, interspersed with the narrative, of a spinning top, hands clasping and close ups of faces seem to quote lesbian video artist Sadie Benning's work on Pixelvision in its style and atmosphere. Its low budget feel reminds us that it was made by lesbians and for lesbians at a grassroots level in order to produce something they could really relate to and enjoy. Its strength lies in its humour and complete devotion to its subject, and should appeal to any open-minded person who enjoys a romantic comedy, or liked subsequent films like 'All over Me', 'I Shot Andy Warhol', 'The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls In Love' and most recently 'Boys Don't Cry' and 'Show Me Love'.

Its a film for people who know they've been in that situation..i.e. being single and gay...meeting someone being happy..it touches on lesbian politics ...and explores issues of being out...feel good movie..i love this film..makes me feel happy to be a lesbian.

This film has an interesting style of presentation and explores so many lesbian issues it is almost untrue and its even better becasue they are so subtle..I have watched this film at least thirty times and I get something new from it every time. The general story line is very basic but all the undertones make it quite complex when you take a deeper look at it. I think it portrays an imagine of virtually every type of lebian there is out there and it has an intriguing messege to tell. Plus I think the leading lady, who plays Max is tottally hot, but there is someone in this film for everyone's tastes!

I'm sorry to say I didn't like the film or more exactly I didn't understand the message it was trying to convey.

Singular idea to shoot the film in black and white gives a sort of intimate view but really couldn't relate to the story.

Most reviewers said that it is everyday life. Sincerely to me it didn't seem so.

Found it very confusing the abstract shots of hands fidgeting with a wooden spinning top between scenes.

Maybe I'm just the odd one out but to me it all appeared as an ill-made surrealistic comedy.
