Amazon.co.uk Review
The second most-watched mini-series (after Roots) of all time, The Thorn Birds was originally broadcast in 1983 and captivated viewers with its story of a lifelong conflict between the spirit and the flesh. Adapted from the bestselling novel by Colleen McCullough, the production stars Richard Chamberlain as a Catholic priest named Ralph de Bricassart, whose life in Australia between 1920 and 1962 is one long torment as he pines for his lover, Meggie Carson (Rachel Ward), while seeking advancement in his clergyman career. The passion and the guilt make for compelling drama, but a stellar cast of supporting players adds muscle to the proceedings: Barbara Stanwyck (who won an Emmy for her work as Meggie's tough grandmother), Jean Simmons, Richard Kiley, Christopher Plummer, Bryan Brown and Mare Winningham. Chamberlain, who was something of the king of the mini-series form at the time, is very good in the lead, as is the often-underrated Ward. Their affair is indeed irresistible to watch, which proves to be true, too, of the story's thick weave of church politics, forbidden desire, social change over decades, and family secrets. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

The Thorn Birds is a must see to true romantics. If you love a tortured romance you'll love this film. From Colleen McCullough's best selling novel, the Thorn Birds is the story of a young priest, Father Ralph de Bricassart, (Richard Chamberlain) Who is torn between his ambition and the love of a woman. The Thorn Birds spands three generations. The raw Australian outback is the perfect backdrop for this timeless love story. Rachel Ward gives an outstanding performance, as Meggie Cleary, the object of Ralph's desires. Also not to be missed are the wonderful performances given by, Barbra Stanwyck, Christopher Plummer, Gene Simmons, and Brian Brown. A love so unatainable, forbidden, forever. The Thorn Birds.
This movie is an all time epic if there ever was one. The love story pulls you in and never lets you go. The Thorn Birds is one of my all time favorite films. Please give this remarkable film a chance to capture your heart, the way it's captured mine.

5 out of 5 stars A Film for all romantics   August 24, 2004

Through several generations this film is still the best romatic, heart wrenching ever. I have watched this film all my life as my mother and grandmother love it. The woman who created this love story really understands how cruel life can be and i would love to meet her. Its about a little girl call Maggie, who meets a priest when her family move. From the moment she meet him till the day he died she was in love with him. She spent her whole life crying for a man she could never had, as he always choose god before her. But secretly he is also in love with her. She marries another man as means to try and forget about him. But he could never be the man she wants him to be so she could truely love him. Then she steals a part of him that god has no use for-he's son!! She never tells him that he has a son with her untill he tragically drowns.
I'm not going to say anymore as i don't want to spoil it. But if you really want a good crying session, buy this film. I promise you, you will want to watch it time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars The 2nd Titanic!   July 2, 2004

This film is the most romantic film after Titanic ever created. I'm sure anyone up for a weep will get so much pleasure out of this film. It is about a sweet, innocent girl named Meggie, who falls in love with a priest from the first day she saw him. She knows she can never have him but she can never let go. It is a love unattainable, forbidden, FOREVER. Many, many years go by and Meggie finds new attraction, but she is not happy. Her family fades away over the years, one by one. This is a truly touching story and will really make you cry. It is so romantic and will keep you amused for over 7 hours! Trust me, it's worth the money! I don't regret ever buying this once.

I first read the novel when i was 18. First saw the mini series when I was 22. I have seen it many times since and recently on the DVD. I have always maintained that God Almighty is the ultimate story teller! But if any human can come to a billionth of his telling it has to be the thorn birds. What a novel, what a mini series!
It is the ultimate novel about humans and their behaviour and what drives us all , Love. I would advise people first to read the book and then watch the series.

After greatly enjoying reading the book i decided to invest in the first video of the series. I bought it not realising that it was only a third of the book which was a shame, but all in all it made very enjoyable watching, if not a little dated! i would definately recommend this to anyone, and advise reading the book first! x
