Amazon.co.uk Review Regularly touted as one of the best British sitcoms ever, Only Fools and Horses kicked off in 1981 when mobile phones were the size of bricks and wine bars were the ultimate places to hang out in. The formula was simple enough: Cockney wideboy Derek Trotter (brilliantly played by David Jason) dreams of better things for himself while sharing a cramped council flat in the nicely named Peckham tower block Nelson Mandela House with his unworldly brother Rodney and his sweet but doddery old granddad. Trouble is, Del's endless money-making schemes (such as his attempt to flog a consignment of one-legged turkeys, or his plan to sell bottled tap water) inevitably backfire, like the knackered old Robin Reliant van he uses to cart around all this faulty gear. Created by John Sullivan, who also sings the very catchy theme tune, Only Fools and Horses is a wonderful mix of dodgy but loveable characters (such as Del Boy's dimwit friend Trigger), knockabout slapstick (no-one falls down with as much comedic grace as Jason) and brilliantly crafted dialogue. Sadly, Leonard Pierce who played Granddad died in 1983; but his armchair in the Trotter household was filled in 1985 by Buster Merryfield as Uncle Albert (an old merchant seaman who bores Del and Rodney with tales of his war days). The show ran to seven series and ended with characteristic warmth in 1991, when Del Boy became a father; but the Trotters made occasional returns to the small screens with six hugely popular one-off Christmas specials. As Del Boy himself might say: "Lovely jubbly". --Edward Lawrenson

The Classic TV comedy must have. August 24, 2001 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
This collection has to be in your collection, the early 'Grandad' only fools to me are the best, they are raw comedy with introductions to the main characters such as Trigger calling Rodney Dave and Rodney asking if they call Trigger-Trigger because he carries a gun "no, it's cos he looks like an horse" CLASSIC.
not the trotters finest moments June 6, 2007 sean paul mccann (ireland) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
The first series of only fools and horses wasnt a success,in some ways its easy to see why,its a mixed bag, mostly good of course but the series looks good when you know all you need to know about the trotters but when this was released in 1981,what people saw was all that they would know so what they viewed was at face value so some of the material is a bit watery. The show failed to win the viewers so the bbc said to creator john sullivan that they were gonna cancel the show but sullivan being determined begged for a second series, showed the bbc some scripts and they agreed and the gamble more than paid off. Series one contains six episodes and the first ever christmas special which wasnt quite feature length at this stage, the first episode is called 'big brother' and is a good enough episode,as are the next four episodes ranging from brilliant in parts, classic in others to frustrating and poor, the show certainly didnt have its free flowing style at this early stage but thats almost to be expected of a first series. However its with the last episode of the series that the word poor can really be thrown at.'The Russians are coming' deals with the threat of world war three and a fall out shelter that del made to save his family in the event of war,the show features del, rodney and grandad in the shelter talking for ages but the conversation is really boring and seldom worthy of half a smile so thats not the norm for the classic show, and the christmas special fails to impose itself to anything other than average with nothing of real note happening. I am an only fools fanatic and i know my stuff and i could easily come on here saying that this is 42 carrot gold comedy,it is a good series as a whole but not a magic one but dont hesitate to buy this, you need all of the episodes to see how the story unfolds, but dont go looking for masterpiece after masterpiece in series one because it doesnt flow that way.
A great series July 17, 2003 Lone Star (UK) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I recently started my Only Fools and Horses dvd collection about 6 months ago and have now got all of the 11 dvds. This one was the first of the 11 which i bought and i must say how great it is. I had never seen the first series really so it was a new series to me. It has six episodes which are all enjoyable and bring back alot of memories to ofah fans so this one is a must have to people who have loved the adventures of Del boy and the rest of the Trotter clan.
Great British humor March 11, 2004 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I`ll never forget the first time I saw Only fools and horses on the telly. It was about 1988 when BBC could be viewed for the first time in the Netherlands. I nearly wet my pants when I watched the Cash and Curry show... Now I try to collect all the DVD`s!!! I Guess there is al lot of the Trotters in all of us... Great DVD, great performances of David Jason and his team. I am really glad the series is now on DVD and can be preserved for my children.
Trotters 1st series September 29, 2004 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
As everyone else say's, how can you fault the DVD. Del, Rodney & Grandad are upto their old tricks and keep you laughing from start to end. I would have given this 5 stars except for the fact I cannot find a main menu therefore you have to watch all Episodes in 1 go or like me you watch a couple turn it off then have to skip through each episode and watch the start music and the end music. I found this very dis-apointing.
