Amazon.co.uk Review This remake of Neil Simon's l970 comedy finds Goldie Hawn and Steve Martin as Ohio yokels cast adrift in Mayor Rudy Giuliani's sanitised New York City. With their son recently departed for Britain, the empty-nesters travel to the Big Apple for a job interview and are beset with all kinds of bad luck, starting with their flight being rerouted to Boston. Things only go downhill from there, of course, as they're mugged by an Andrew Lloyd Webber imposter, the high-tech multilingual navigation system on their rented Cadillac goes haywire, and their hotel reservations fall through. Although marred by some out-of-place slapstick and mawkish romance scenes, this film's not without its funny moments. The couple stumbles into a sexual-addiction encounter group and has to try to back out gracefully (not succeeding very well, of course). John Cleese is howlingly funny as he reprises his Fawlty Towers role of a cross-dressing hotelier, and Martin has a great drug-delirium scene, in which he's slipped a hit of LSD in jail (thinking it's aspirin). Just try not to think in terms of comparisons to Neil Simon's original and this remake works fairly well. --Jerry Renshaw, Amazon.com

A right Belly Laugh February 22, 2001 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
What a laugh! i watched this movie with my sister and we were in creases the whole time. Steve martin and Goldie Hawn create the ultimate disaster couple. The comedy is very similar to the National Lampoon Vacation saga which is certinately not a bad factor. John Cleese(tranvestite hotel manager) is also hilarious I loved the part when he's dancing to Donner Summer's 'Bad Girls'. Worth buying at this cheap price.
Out of Towners or just Out of It? November 22, 2001 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was looking forward to seeing this movie being a fan of the Steve and Goldie partnership in previous films such as House Sitter. But what a disappointment! This is so laboured it's hard work to watch. The comic timing that made Housitter such a laugh is non-existent here. Even Steve and Goldie perform as if they are just going through the motions. If you're a fan of Goldie and Steve's previous top-notch comedies then give this one a miss and save yourself the disappointment
The Out of Towners (1999) July 6, 2003 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This modern version is a big disappointment to anyone who saw the original with Jack Lemmon and Diane Keaton. I barely managed one good laugh from the whole film, whereas the original had me doubled up throughout.
The Out Of Towners May 31, 2005 Rich Milligan (Thatcham, Berkshire) Another outing for the Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn duo in this likeable and entertaining light comedy. Not quite reaching the standards set in "The Housesitter", their previous outing, certainly in the originality stakes, this film still contains some nice humorous moments and will raise more than a smile or two. Some of the jokes alas though fall quite flat and seem to be badly presented. The scene on the Central Park green for example is telegraphed from a mile away and comes over slightly smutty in what is otherwise a nice clean innocent film. The characters are also very one dimensional. There is no effect to develop any personalities and both Martin's and Hawn's characters are bent and manipulated to suit the situations they find themselves in, rather than let two strong characters dictate the plot. Special mention for John Cleese though, who puts in a fantastic turn as the arrogant and sycophantic hotel manager. He steals every scene he appears in and outshines both the film's "stars" whenever they appear in the same shot. Still a very enjoyable film and scenes like the one at the car rental desk or with the daughter's neighbours remain awfully funny.
Hilarious June 30, 2007 K. A. French (Uk. England) This is one of the most funniest films i have ever seen. Of course the best actor in this film by far is John Cleese (the tranny hotel manager) who seems to bag all the best lines. But other reviewers have also said this but not commented on Goldie Hawn and Steve Martin. They are also great and i think the corny not serious and funny acting makes this film funny to watch. The best scences in this film are when Goldie Hawn seduces a man in the hotel so she can have a meal and its ends up going so very very wrong. All in all i like this film and if you like steve martin and goldie hawn you wont be dispaointed.
