Amazon.co.uk Review
In the fourth and reportedly final film of the Lethal Weapon series, director Richard Donner reunites with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, who reprise their roles as Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh for one last hurrah in a film that is decidedly better than the third and first chapters. This time the pair are pitted against Jet Li, who plays the leader of a Chinese organised crime unit. Li, a veteran of hundreds of Hong Kong action films, more than holds his own against the more established team of Gibson, Glover, Rene Russo and Joe Pesci with his subtle yet strong portrayal of the quietly irrepressible Wah Sing Ku. As always with the Lethal series, the plot is incredibly simple to follow: someone steals something, someone gets killed and Murtaugh is reluctantly thrown into the mix while Riggs dives into the case with gleeful aplomb. As with the previous movies, we watch for the sheer action and chemistry alone. The action sequences throughout the fourth instalment are exquisite, from the opening scene involving a flame-thrower, a burning building and a half-naked Murtaugh strutting like a chicken (don't ask, just watch), to the climactic showdown that pays genuine tribute to Jet Li's masterful martial art skills. As for chemistry, the bond between these characters is so strong by now that you sometimes feel like you're watching a TV series in its sixth season, such is the warm familiarity between the audience and the personalities on the screen. The humour is more fluid than ever, aided immeasurably by the casting of comedian Chris Rock, who like Li does a great job of making his presence known in some memorable verbal tirades that would bring a smile out of the Farrelly brothers. But it's the verbal and emotional jousting between Glover and Gibson that makes this fourth episode especially appealing; both are in peak form with great physical and verbal timing. One can only hope that if this is indeed the last of the Lethal films, that it won't be the last time we see Glover and Gibson together on screen. --Jeremy Storey

5 out of 5 stars A fabulous movie that mixes hard action with good comedy !   July 20, 2000

This film is fabulous. The whole series is fabulous. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover perform fabulously. It is a great mix of comedy, action and romance. This film is about good traditional police work, comic moments, frienship and relationship. In this film Riggs and Murtol are after Chinese criminals who are smuggling imigrants. They go through many chases and scrapes and in this film Riggs is going to be a father (mother, girlfriend Rene Russo) and Rodger Murtol is going to be a granddad. Its just an excellent film.

Easily the worst and most annoying movie of '98. The combination of some of Hollywoods most annoying smartasses contribute to make this the most tedious movie since "Smokie and the bandit". Gibson is a great actor, but when he plays Riggs he seems to think that he is a comedian. That he aint! Hopefully this one is the last in the series.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest action movie ever?   April 24, 2003

What a way to end the story. Lethal Weapon 4 is the final and by far the best of the 4, which are all undoubtedly superb. Riggs and Murtaugh go through many wicked car chases in this, the best one being where Riggs leaps onto a truck to 'interrogate' a Chinese on the location of the Hongs. They eventually crash onto the ground, and Roger comes to the rescue, smashing the other mercedes off the road.
The final fight is ace - Riggs and Murtaugh make a great team! It also has a great ending which is very satisfying to all viewers. If you liked the others, then watch it now!!!

5 out of 5 stars East V West in one big bout of all things Lethal Weapon   January 1, 2005

P>Riggs (Gibson) and Murtaugh (Glover), now considering their retirement from the LAPD, are unexpectedly thrown into a gunfight, and it just has to happen when they're out sea fishing in Murtaugh's brand new boat. As you'd expect, the cops win the gunfight and most of the enemies either jump off the boat or try to continue to win. After Riggs has climbed aboard and taken out almost all the remaining enemies, he hears a noise coming from down below, as he opens the covering, he sees a room full of Asian Immigrants, that can mean only one thing. The heat is back on for a fourth time.

LETHAL WEAPON 4 is just more of the same as the other three movies, but Donner has injected a couple of new ideas into the franchise, the countless funny one-liners of Chris Rock and the deadly Martial Arts of Jet Li as the evil, menacing exporter Wa Sing Ku. Gibson and Glover just do what they do all the time as the faultless pairing, fight, shoot and talk their way out of the many catastrophes that they get themselves into throughout the saga. Russo is just as beautiful and seductive as she is in all of her films and Pesci puts in a performance that never fails to amuse and laugh as he makes it through the film being his trademark wimpish self.

LETHAL WEAPON 4 is more of the same, but Donner still makes it work through his use of violence, humour and one-liners that keep on getting better and better, but he tries a couple of new things this time around, and it still works through the entwinement that makes Lethal Weapon a top action collection that should be a part of every film lovers collection.

No other film series has managed to keep the electric pace and action going that is offered by the Lethal Weapon crew. The jokes are in full swing and the action is great. One for your collection.
