Amazon.co.uk Review
The first Batman sequel takes a wicked turn with the villainous exploits of the freakish and mean-spirited Penguin (Danny DeVito), whose criminal collaboration with evil tycoon Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) threatens to drain Gotham City of its energy supply. As if that wasn't enough, Batman (Michael Keaton) has his hands full with the vengeful Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), who turns out to be a lot more dangerous than a kitten with a whip. As with the first Batman feature, director Tim Burton brings his distinct visual style to the frantic action but this time there's a darker malevolence lurking beneath all that extraordinary production design. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A great follow up to the best Batman instalment...   October 23, 2000

The original cast and crew from the first movie return to display once agian Tim Burtons definitive vision of the Batman lore. This really is a great movie because it offers everything the first movie has and yet goes that bit extra to provide not only a fresh new story, but great new visual effects too. As before, the dark knight is played by Michael Keaton, this time he's up against the Penguin, played briliantly by Danny De Vito. Thers also a third character, the Catwomen played by Michelle Pfeiffer. The story is simple, Batman has to protect Gotham City, but with a love interest in the from of Celena Kyle (a.k.a the Catwomen) Bruce Waynes emotions are far from easy. After this movie, things go downhill when Tim Burton retires from the directors chair and Joel Shumacher is now at the reigns. Michael Keaton also hands over the mantel to Val Kilmer ... If your an avid Batfan, you'll probably agree the Batman Returns is how it's supposed to look, .... There's talk of a fifth Batman movie, lets hope Burton and Keaton save us from anymore punishment.

If you want to buy a superhero movie that has it all, then buy this one! From the eery opening right through to the climatic ending, Batman Returns will have you gripped. I first saw it when I was very little (despite the rating), and I practically watched it every week. Michael Keaton seems to, so far, be the best batman. He has different factors which make Bruce Wayne so interesting. In this one, he's got over his parent's death (Joel Schumacher will bring it up again in the not-so-great Forever). Danny DeVito brings a whole new meaning to grotesque as The Penguin. Kinda feel sad for him though... Christopher Walken plays the real villian, Max, a manipulative businessman. Michelle Pfeiffer is the greatest thing about the film really. Selina Kyle is a very complex character, and as the twisted Catwoman, she adds mass sex appeal. The soundtrack is superb, and Danny Elfman is at his best during this movie. BUY IT!

THIS is how Batman films should be. Not the lycra-and-plastic-fanatical Batman and Robin, just understated costumes (well, except Catwoman's) and lots of action and violence. After all, Batman is the "Dark Knight": he's not exactly gonna be the nicest guy you're gonna meet, is he? That's why this film, and its basis Batman, are SO much better than the last two. They portray him as THE Dark Knight, not some family fun character, and Michael Keaton does the dual personalities bit perfectly. Danny DeVito and Michelle Pfeiffer are excellent as the Penguin and Catwoman, and Christopher Walken is excellent as the twisted Shreck - not to be confused with the green ogre.

One warning though: if you don't like dark films, you'd best stick with Batman and Robin. This is as dark as it can get, with people falling off buildings onto pavements, Penguin bleeding quite badly, and Batman getting scratched a hell of a lot by Catwoman.

But this is an extremely good film, and at A 7.99, well worth its price.

5 out of 5 stars The best Batman ever   April 9, 2000

Tim Burton manges the impossible, a sequel that is even better than the original. All the dark and moody atmosphere from the first film is retained and Keaton excells as the Dark Knight, adding more layers to Bruce Wayne's character. Danny Devito provides a unique (and menacing) penguin. As for Michelle Pfieffer as Catwoman, three words: Skin Tight Vinyl, meowwwww! It's just a pity in my opinion, Keaton and Burton left the franchise as Joel Schumaker (or however it's spelled) is a dreadful director. Remember Schuemacher is German for cobblers!

One of the most amazing and atmospheric films I have ever seen! Burton excels himself with this piece of eyecandy and actually follows through with a decent plot. Pfeiffer steals the whole show as Catwoman, first making you really feel sorry for her and then rooting for her to get revenge. Easily the best film she has done to date. Having said all of that it is still Burton's jawdropping vision of Gotham that really steals the show!
