The Mail Train Now Leaving... February 7, 2008 ianrmillard 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This film was fairly closely based on the Great Train Robbery of 1963. It had similar elements (several London gangs working together, a mail train carrying millions of used notes, a Buckinghamshire robbery location etc). It differs in some details (a bank expert broken out of prison to help, a disused airfield as hideout rather than the real robbers' farmhouse) but the essence is there. Stanley Baker is believable as the intelligent and steely leader of the job and most if not all of the others looking credibly "criminal"! The robbery BEFORE the main robbery contains a car chase almost plagiaristically based on the one in the British crime classic The Blue Lamp, made a decade previously. The area of London is the same and even the near-totalling of a group of little children trying to cross the road with their teacher. This is a watchable film, one for a cold beer and enjoyment unsullied by mental effort.
