a doctor who fanatics review July 26, 2006 Alicia Michaels (London, UK) 46 out of 49 found this review helpful
I am using my parents account for this and will probably review other items. This is a great toy that made me feel like I was doctor who (there is nothing else about me that justifies that) It comes with 2 nibs, (a simple biro and a UV pen) and a UV light. Although in a few episodes (eg. doomsday) there is a range of noises, the one noise on here is extremely authentic. My favorite part has to be the "zoom" factor for the UV light, as you can use the light from a close range by slotting the cube on the side upwards (If you dont know what I mean then it does not matter) My only criticism is that the UV pen is only suited to writing in the little booklet the screwdriver comes with. It comes up weakly on other surfaces. Overall a great toy for young kids (like me) and doctor who collectors
Exactly what I wanted too July 7, 2006 SimonB (South West England) 34 out of 34 found this review helpful
As a long-time Doctor Who fan I just couldn't resist getting one of these, and I honestly don't regret it. It looks good, and the UV light and ink is a neat touch. Some people have complained that the sounds are too quiet, but I think they're just about right. The two sounds are subtly different (but very authentic) and you have to listen closely to tell them apart. What's amazing is that the BBC reportedly have started using these in the new David Tennant series as they are more durable than the real prop! (the toy is about half an inch longer than the real prop as it has to accommodate sounds and batteries). Also, contrary to the Amazon product description, it appears that the BBC are now supplying these with batteries as standard, and they have also begun re-supplying them in new packaging featuring David Tennant. If you're a doctor who fan of any age, I would recommend this to you. Well worth the investment of a tenner.
Sonic Screwdriver - A 9 year olds opinion May 29, 2006 Kat (Watford) 32 out of 38 found this review helpful
I'm a 9 year old girl and I like doctor who. I have purchased a sonic screwdriver, I have had it for a day and a bit of it has fallen off however it is really fun. It makes two realistic sounds. It comes with a spare nib. I am sure any 8, 9 or 10 girl or boy who likes doctor who would love to own one, adults might like it to. I used it while I watched Doctor Who and zapped it when the doctor did! So I totally recommend it just don't drop it because it won't last.
If you're reversing the polarity of the neutron flow... November 5, 2005 Don Kepunja (Retford, Northern England) 24 out of 29 found this review helpful
How come it took them 30 years to market this? Anyway, now it's here, and if you can find something that's as much fun for a tenner I'll take three. I assume most of these will go to 34-year-old men (handy; their understanding wives will help put the slightly-fiddly batteries in the slightly-fiddly mechanism) and that's good because one imagines this item, though well-made and very like the telly one, could get knocked about by the smallest children if asked to perform too robustly. That said, I've used it to explode marsh gas, detonate land mines, reverse a teleport device and destroy the office computer. Gents, if you don't get one for Christmas there's a chance they don't love you...
I Think It's Exactly What I Wanted April 19, 2006 R. J. Horsley 22 out of 28 found this review helpful
Big Doctor Who fan, but not a fanatical completist or anything, just wanted this for fun as a neat little trinket. If you're expecting your kids to "Play" with this for hours on end, forget it. Unless you're actually encouraging your kids to play with their imagination and not rely on a play-set or action figure to give them every moment's inspiration, then don't bother buying this--it'll just be wasted on them (in other words, unless they enjoy The Doctor's adventures as intelligent, sometimes silly, but overall fun adventuring minus a bunch of slimy aliens or super-villains in capes, then this won't be worth it). This is for kids who like to play with the boxes refrigerators come in, or take rope and make themselves into a cowboy using their fingers as gun barrels. That's it. This is a fun, highly accurate toy (Mine came with batteries and has worked fine, no drainage yet and it's been a week of regular "shooting" it around for giggles, don't know what the other complaints are--if you didn't get batteries with it, sounds like you bought it from the wrong source). It doesn't shoot plastic bullets or have kung-fu grip and IT DOESN'T ADVERTISE THAT IT DOES. I'd get this if you're a geeky folk who enjoy the Doctor and enjoy the idea of having a trinket from the show. That's it.
