Avoid it like the plague! November 3, 2007 Mr. C. Brock (Glasgow) 55 out of 90 found this review helpful
Let me get straight to the point - do not buy this product. It doesn't even merrit the compulsary one star I am grungingly required to give it as a minimum. Choose one of the many others available on Amazon and same yourself a lot of wasted time, money and inconvenience (not to mention your precious files, photos, etc..) I have already had an unrecoverable problem due to a virus McAfee let through and quite simply they are not interested in helping - I had to replace my PC!!! I should have known better having previous experience with McAfee, having lost my system on 3 previous occasions in 2 years, but my philosophy was "better the devil you know" - well I was wrong! During the same time I've ran another PC with Norton and never had any problem (maybe I've been lucky). There are so many Security Suites available these days there is no excuse for choosing trash like this. There technical support is awful and is based solely on standard procedures already available on their website. My problem was escalated and I never heard anything more from them. Incidentally their telephone support is extortionate so don't count on that unless you're very rich.
Incompatable with Spybot and Lavasoft AD-Aware January 28, 2008 Rory (Scotland) 27 out of 27 found this review helpful
It's a hit and miss affair choosing internet protection, what one person says works for them doesnt always work for you. Tried Norton AV in the past but it was a nightmare and I returned it to my local PC shop for a refund. Success with McAfee since 2004 although installing last years (2007) Internet Security suite was a total pain. As I plan to get an additional laptop this year it was cheaper to purchase the 2008 3 user version, it is also cheaper than getting a year of extra updates from McAfee. 2008 version installed very quickly has an identical interface with a couple of extra bells and whistles added. Overall McAfee seems to work quietly and efficiently in the background without hogging resources as I had found with Norton. The anti phishing filter seems to work: I found out the hard way last year when I switched it off for a period and got phished!! One downside with the 2007 and 2008 MIS versions is that there are incompatabilities with some third party anti spyware applications eg Ad- Aware and Spybot. McAfee Installation detected them and I was requested to remove them before continuing the installation. If you plan to install McAfee it might be quicker to uninstall such third party applications first. A list of them can be found on the McAfee support website but you have to hunt around to find it. Try searching the site for 'incompatible third party applications'
More than just anti-virus protection December 28, 2007 John Nunn (Coventry, U.K.) 23 out of 24 found this review helpful
McAfee produce one of the better anti-virus packages on the market, this suite of tools not only includes this great engine but also provides a software firewall and family protection from unwanted content. O.K. that is what they claim but does it work, well in a nutshell yes it does. The software firewall is superior to the basic one supplied by Microsoft but is nowhere near as capable as a correctly configured Hardware firewall. The content filtering is about as effective as they come, but with patience and time spent configuring it; it can be useful. The biggest benefit it brings is its ease of use; everything is managed via a series of wizards making it quick and simple to configure.
Dirty Tricks February 25, 2008 J. Douglas (United Kingdom) 23 out of 25 found this review helpful
McAfee have recently introduced AUTOMATIC RENEWAL. It sounds harmless enough, but what that means is, without telling you first, or informing you via email, you are 'opted-in' to this new service, which debits your bank account for cover renewal well in advance.
Basically, they take money from your account without your permission or consent, using your card details they have on record. Not only that, but you can't cancel the automatic renewal service from your online McAfee account; no, you have to contact Customer Services to get it taken off.
There are many people out there who's bank account will be tipped into an overdraft situation with this little McAfee trick, and the banks will then charge people for going overdrawn with their accounts, and all because McAfee think it's fine to take money from peoples accounts without permission, and opting them into something that should legally be agreed to first.
Bottom line - McAfee gives great protection with it's software, but this latest stunt proves that they can act just as badly and dishonestly as the people online they are trying to protect you from. Shame on you, McAfee
the best I could find December 6, 2007 Sam (York, UK) 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
I have been using McAfee for long time, got this new one, installed it, and to be honest did not find a big difference from the previous edition, even the interface is quite similar. I have disabled McAfee's firewall because I had my own application, and the other features are quite useful as well. The good points about McAfee are: - very easy to set up and install. the default set-up and configurations are quite solid and you do not need to modify any of them if you are a beginner user. - McAfee is still a lot user friendly in terms of memory and CPU usage than other Security suites. I tried Norton, and my system was struggling. - I tried Bitdefender, which is also very strong and good, but had lots of trouble because it did not detect windows firewall, and it refused to shut down. -Mcafee's update is very frequent and useful and all automatically done, so you do not have to do anything. - system scan is good, of course it takes long time depending on your hard drive size, and what files you need to scan. - there is a feature that I found very useful, which is that McAfee blocks buffer overflows, and that is very good. this means that you do not have to restart your explorer and lose what you have been doing in case there is a buffer overload of opened applications.
What I do not like is that you have to get used to a lot of warnings whenever an applicaiton tries to modify or do something. That is all good of course, and it is just at the beginning, as the programme will then learn what to do. This is a good solid security suite, never caused any trouble, and compatibility is never an issue with McAfee. Very easy to install, update and scan files with it. I would have liked a different interface from the previous edition, and would also like the idea of having downloadable DAT upates, which was a great thing McAfee had in the past, where you can update your virus signature database if you did not have internet. Now you have to have internet to be able to update, which is not very convinent for all people.
