I love this software! October 17, 2006 Paul S. Weaver (Brighouse, W Yorks United Kingdom) 78 out of 81 found this review helpful
This product really does do what it says it does and makes typing effortless. As you would expect I am writing this review using Dragon voice recognition software. The accuracy rate is simply stunning. Within 20 minutes of installing the software I was able to dictate the entire front page of the Guardian newspaper with only three corrections required. I have been a fan of Dragon and its various incarnations over the last five years but this version does seem to be as near perfect as I can imagine. My only minor reservation is that I have not been able to successfully get it to work with my nine-year-old daughter's voice. However she gets an excellently with version 8. As for the previous reviewer who really seems to have struggled with the programme, all I can think of is that the programme is fairly demanding in terms of system resources and needs a minimum of 1 GB of RAM. This would explain the frequent crashes he was experiencing. If like me you are a fairly mediocre typist then this software is completely liberating and a joy to use. So far during this dictation I have only had to make one correction. I have the preferred edition which does claim to offer greater compatibility with other programmes. However even version 8 in its standard form allowed me to dictate into virtually any programme. The only limitation was that in some programmes I could not correct and train mistakes. All in all I think this is a superb programme that almost makes the dictation process a pleasure.

Perhaps the best way of reviewing this software is by reading a text and not correcting it so that you can see how many errors Dragon naturally speaking makes. Here is an extract taken from The Reason Why, by Cecil Woodham-Smith: Before The Light Brigade had advanced 50 yards the Russian guns crashed out, and great clouds of smoke rose at the end of the valley. A moment later an extraordinary and inexplicable incident took place. The advance was proceeding at a steady trot when suddenly Nolan, riding beside his friend Captain Maurice in the first line, urged on his horse and galloped diagonally across the front. Galloping madly a head and to the right, he crossed in front of Lord Cardigan -- an unprecedented breach of military etiquette -- and, turning in his saddle, shouted and waved his sword as if he would address The Brigade. Had he suddenly realised that his interpretation of the order had been wrong, and that in his impetuosity he had directed the Light Brigade to certain death? No one will ever know, because at that moment a Russian shell pressed on the right of Lord Cardigan, and a fragment tour at its way into Nolan's breast, exposing his heart. As you can see, there are some errors, but once you have learnt to use the software correction is quite an easy process.I still use the keyboard, but much less than I used to. I installed Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 on a Dell laptop with one Gb of RAM. the only technical problem that persists is that the software does not like to hibernate. I suspect that this is because the user files must be saved before shutting down the programme.

It's hard to believe that this software's on its ninth version and still so poor. It makes the same mistakes again and again, however much you train it. It crashes Thunderbird. It crashes OpenOffice. It doesn't work properly with Firefox. It hangs for no discernible reason. Touch the mike and it thinks its heard something... and hangs forever while it tries to work out what you've said. And unforgivably, there's no way of escaping the proces. If you enjoy swearing at your computer and repeatedly rebooting it, it's hard to think of a better way to spend 70 quid.
Can I give it 0 stars? August 27, 2007 S. Kaye (UK) 21 out of 26 found this review helpful
Wow, some sort of warning that this software won't run on a 64-bit system might have been useful. Of course, you have to open the software to find that out. It remains to be seen whether I can return this item or not!
Installation problem with Vista October 24, 2007 N. DeMarco (UK) 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
I can't tell you how well the product works because I can't get it to install onto Windows Vista - despite its alleged compatibility. Lengthy and expensive phone calls to Nuance tech support have yet to realise a solution. A download of some additional Macrovision software to deal with the Windows installer package errors (1772 and 1722) has produced no joy. Using the Nuance knowledge data base offered a solution which hasn't worked either. By the way, make sure you're not running your OS in 64-bit. Then they email you a couple of pages with 25 instructions which - needless to say - work not one bit or byte. Time wasted to date? Two hours. Confused? You will be. PS. I've sent it back to Amazon. PPS Amazon have sent it back to me saying what amounts to 'tough luck'. How's that for customer service?
