5 out of 5 stars Best Mac purchase i ever made!   October 2, 2007

I bought this product a month ago and it has changed my life - seriously! I am new to Mac and really missed some of the programs i was used to (Access, Project) and I occasionally take my work home with me (all Sage based) so having a Mac that could run Windows was ideal for me. I decided not to go to Boot Camp as i did not want to partition my hard drive.

Installation was easy, just 'hit next' and it installs. Making my XP virtual machine was much the same. After creating my XP, i used the Transporter feature to import all of my data from my home machine into my XP on Mac. I left it running overnight and in the morning i had pretty much my old PC running on my mac at the same time as my mac. Brilliant.

I really cant think of a negative for Parallels. It hasnt crashed on me at all (though i am only 6 weeks or so in) and i can connect my mobile phone to it and sync it within Windows. The only issue i had was my own inability to get Bluetooth workingm though i sent an email to the technical support listed in the manual (Avanquest - the UK publisher) and they got me up and running after a few hours of sending the email. I have now made a Vista VM and am playing around with that.

Do give this product a go if you are a Mac user. I cant fault it - and i now have finally got rid of my old Dell desktop machine!

I bought Parallels 3.0 on recommendation from a mate. I started college earlier this year and while my parents bought me a Mac for my studies, we are actually using a Windows based program on my course. Rather than have to buy another laptop i just bought a copy of Parallels and Windows XP Home now i can run my college application and do all the rest of my college work on my funky Mac.

I dont know what the previous person was talking about, saying that he couldnt run Parallels on his low grade Mac? I have an entry level Macbook, the white one, nothing flash, a gig of RAM, and i can run Parallels really well. Its saved my life! This is a great product. I use it most days to run my college stuff, but i also use it to run the PC version of Office and MSN as i prefer those to the Mac ones, and plus i already own Office. BUY THIS PRODUCT! Its amazingly good value, and i'm definitely a happy chappie being able to run Windows and Mac on my Mac!!

5 out of 5 stars Truly amazing piece of software   November 13, 2007

This is, without doubt, amazing. When i decided to ditch the pc and go over to Mac, I thought I might struggle without the familiarity of Windows. With Parallels, there was the chance to keep a bit of Windows on the side and still make the move. I have to say the Mac is a gorgeous bit of kit and I'm gradually getting used to it, but Parallels has made it a very sensible decision. I have a 2.4Ghz iMac with 500Gb hd / 2Gb RAM and it runs like a dream. I have installed Office 2003 and I have to say that I can't tell the difference from when I used it on the pc! Maybe there are problems with basic machines, but with my configuration it IS the best thing since sliced bread! And at this price, why haven't you bought it yet?!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - with XP and Solaris already running.   January 23, 2008

Parallels is easy to install and run. Loading in operating systems is also very easy - select the OS, insert the disk, follow the instructions in the installation window. I found that was all there was to it - for both XP and Solaris.

The speed is very good - I'm running an iMac Core 2 Duo - 2GhZ. Its the lowest spec iMac as of Jan 2008. But, I have a lot of memory (4GB), even so, there is loads left when running up either of these OS's. You'll be 'very' comfortable with only 2GB. There's no hanging or pausing.

With OS X Leopard, its much better. You can run an OS in each virtual desktop - full screen. Excluding the mouse and keyboard, you can easily forget your using a Mac.

I haven't used it intensely, but no crashes so far. There are nice features - like automatically sharing your Mac documents folder with Windows (which is optional).

With this software - the Mac becomes a true platform. This means there's no more excuses to convert.

But, there are a couple of issues:

1) After installing Parallels, it tries to get an update straight after. This hung the application. But, after stopping the process, I updated manually - and it was fine.

2) The manual could be more extensive. Its a quick start guide, but the box is huge for what is in side it - so it could have been filled out with a bigger manual.

3) To buy this directly from the producers is more expensive! Charging extra for a CD version and for updates! Also, the pro version has additional 'Windows' software! NOT, mac software! They don't state this very clearly! Lucky I explored these extra packages to find this out - otherwise it looked very attractive. So, in a word, your better off getting it from here.

1 out of 5 stars AWFUL; buggy, crashes, hangs, slow, worse than using a native Windows PC with bugs!!   November 10, 2007

I got this a few months ago thinking it would be the answer to my prayers. The first time i installed it it was pitiful, crashing ALL the time and very slow!! I reinstalled and things were better. The crashing almost dissapeared (for a while) but i still got hang and poor USB performance. It took 5 minutes before it would recognise my external hard drive; forget immediate recognition!!

I bought it because i have the Microsoft Office 2003 Professional suite and didn't want to fork out again for the Mac version. I also wanted to use a bunch of other PC programs. Well if i say that i am now using Bootcamp (via Leopard) AND have bought Micosoft Office for the Mac, maybe that will give you an idea of how frustrated i am with this software.

I downloaded an 88MB update for Parallels the other day and if anything that made it worse. Whereas before the update it would crash every other time, it then went on to crash EVERY time!! I got absolutely sick of wasting my time over it and asked for my money back yesterday. I'm sticking with Bootcamp which so far has been infinitely more reliable and faster. I'm sure that this software does work well for some people but for me it didn't. I'm not some numpty either, i know my way around a computer and can solve most problems, this was just too much though.

Oh and for all you people imagining i am using a Mac Mini with 512MB of RAM, nope i have a quad core 2.66 Mac Pro with 8GB of ram!
