Good all-round software, but nothing too new or exciting October 24, 2008 Dave the Flav' (UK) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R1F6AT8BTASN5A This is a summary of some of the features that stood out for me with Roxio Creator 2008 Ultimate edition. Once again I chose to do a video review of software, so, once again, apologies for screen flicker! This one is nearly 7 minutes long because there's a lot to cover (and a lot I didn't too - just check the product details if you need more info on what I couldn't squeeze in). I didn't want to make it too long winded, so I capped the video at 6min 45. Comments are welcome, this is my second video review I've done for Amazon so far, so voice your criticisms, I can handle it! My other video review is for Power Director 7 Ultra, which I used to put together the video you see before you.
better than nero - nice interface October 19, 2008 megamarble (South Yorks, UK) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
iv'e been converted - i used to use nero 8 for all my media applications but having 'played' with this software for the last couple of days i am amazed by how good it is. As was stated in the last review i can burn 60 mins of HD to a normal DVD which means i don't necessarily need a blu ray burner to transfer to dvd. The best thing about the software though is the easy to use interface - much easier to use than nero. All in all an excellent package (and so much better than earlier roxio products)
Does (most of) what it says on the box October 21, 2008 S. Craftman (North Powys) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Although the setup instructions don't mention it, you really do need to turn off your firewall to install this. There's no mention of uninstalling a previous version, but you do need to. The installation routine claims it may take several minutes to run. That's "several" as in walk the dog, make a three course meal and have a leisurely bath. Although Blu-ray is supported the packing is unclear as to the extent of that support, and not having a Blu-ray writer (yet) I have no means of experimenting (next year, when prices have dropped a bit...). My best guess is that the software supports Blu-ray as a data medium, but you have to pay extra for a plug-in to allow Blu-ray video authoring. Automix, which is supposed to build play lists automatically, just plain doesn't work. It spends far too much time talking to Gracenote and then falls apart. The other new audio feature, Beatmatch also has severe problems. It's supposed to build a non-stop mix by ascertaining the BPM of each of your selected tracks and merge them into one megamix. It's hopelessly inaccurate at ascertaining the BPM of a track, capable of placing a slow ballad at a higher BPM than something much faster. Different takes of the same song can end up with very different BPMs. Still, it was amusing hearing the last minute or so of the Velvet Underground's Sister Ray speeding up to match the BPM of the next track... After the complaining, the good stuff. Creator Classic works just as before and includes Blu-ray, both single and double as options and ripping CDs and batch conversion of audio files work perfectly. Graphically, the slideshow has been improved, but I find it hard to believe that someone would use the photo-editing capabilities if they had a dedicated graphics editor. But then many of us don't... The biggest improvement over the previous version is in video editing: Roxio claim that the speed increase over the last version is 60%, a figure I see no reason to doubt that, and the range of supported formats is impressive. Tucked away under the Tools menu is a flawed gem: "Catalogue your discs". It handles data and audio disks, but not as far as I can see commercial DVDs. For some time I've been using a kludge using a command line instruction to write a directory of a disc to a text file, then using Windows' own search to look through the collection of text files for the file I'm looking for. "Catalogue your discs" does all that (and faster) from a single interface. Its one flaw is that it doesn't seem to be able to retrieve audio track times - one disc I catalogued had all tracks bar the last as "3.3", and the last track was "4.4" long. Overall, I'm much more impressed than I expected to be with Creator 2009. Roxio have had a bad reputation as regards the first release of a new version. While this version isn't perfect, it's a lot more usable than any previous version - and I've been on the Roxio bus since version 3 (or was it 3.5?). Okay, a couple of the bells are cracked and a few whistles are off-pitch, but this is good stuff. Buy in confidence.
The audio features are pretty good, but the video side of things is woeful and the listed features are misleading. October 29, 2008 Mr Ghostface (United Kingdom) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Most of the features in the Roxio Ultimate package can be found in other well known software, and obviously comparisons with Nero are hard to avoid. Roxio Ultimate does indeed have most copying and editing capabilities you could want and most of them are perfectly functional... copying CDs, backing up files, audio file editing and so on. But where it falls down is with the video side of things. This Ultimate version claims to be 60% faster than a previous version. If that's the case, I dread to think how slow the previous version was, as it's very slow. I have a top spec PC set up as I'm a video/film editor and run other packages without any problems at all. But Roxio video editing really crawls. I'm not sure what the problem is causing this, but it rendered it completely useless for me. If you are serious about video editing, more than just having fun with home videos and photos, then you probably wouldn't be looking at an editor of this level, but if you are just wanting to have fun, I wholly recommend that you avoid this software and use the free Windows Movie/DVD Maker. The Roxio video editor has no features whatsoever that you don't get for free on Windows. Even worse than this, however, is the simple operation of DVD playback. It's so sluggish that the image doesn't even refresh fast enough to even give a smooth image! Unforgivably bad. I thought I might have a hardware glitch when I saw the playback, so immediately tried the very same disc (Star Wars) on Nero and Windows Media Player and there was absolutely no problem. I was quite staggered. Another problem with this package include the installation time, which is very, very slow. I notice others have commented on this as well. Quite why the core Roxio software needs 5GB of space I don't know. Perhaps the biggest bugbear, however is that on the big "tick box" list of features on the packaging, it compares the Ultimate package with the Standard. Under "Burn HD Video onto Blu-ray discs" it says that the Standard edition requires a plug-in but that the Ultimate version has it included. But if you read the small print at the side and bottom, it says the Ultimate edition ALSO requires you to purchase a plug-in from the website. So, it's not included. Considering that the packaging advertises its Blu-ray capabilities, I find this extremely misleading. Roxio offers a wide collection of audio and video editing and burning features, but there are better alternatives which run faster, require less space on your computer, and don't try to overstuff the features. I uninstalled it and will purchase Nero in future. I'd love to recommend Roxio, but I can't.
Superb Item October 21, 2008 Black Edelweiss (Mega City 1) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I love taking Digital Photos and DVD Videos, but ihave always been a little scared of Playing around and Editing them in case i messed them up.Now i can thanks to the Roxio Creator.Installation is easy..if not a Trifle Long Winded. The Argument has always been About Roxio versus Nero, and i have to say that Roxio certainly comes across as more value for Money simply owing to the Masses of Features and Effects incorporated in its Programme. As a Complete Dummy when it comes to Photo and editing programmes, roxio seems fairly easy, but i still have a lot to learn.Overall i am very impressed by the Lay out and ease of use of this Powerful Programme. It will certainly last me for my Life time.
