5 out of 5 stars Brilliant - does exactly what it says   February 9, 2007

I have been looking for a while to get some way of transferring all my old VHS camcorder tapes to DVD. We haven't got a DVD recorder yet, and the recommended ones are still expensive. Then I discovered Dazzle DVD Recorder. My first problem was getting the right connectors. I had to connect a VCR to the Dazzle which is then connected to my PC (this bit's OK using the Dazzle USB cable). The Dazzle will take input from s-video or composite. My input/output from the VCR is scart, so I first got a scart to s-video cable, and then discovered my old VCR did not support s-video - my output was in b&w. I then got a scart to composite video cable (whith phono). Also make sure you get a scart with switchable direction (ie input or output)
You get 2 installation disks - one for the Dazzle DVD burning software, and the other a trial version of Pinnacle Studio Plus. The latter I didn't use, as I have Windows Moviemaker. So plug in and the software takes you through 4 simple set up menus. You can't really do any editing (when you stop the Dazzle recording say a bad bit of video it automatically finishes off the burn). You are limited to the title page background (you can import your own music & pictures) and chapter button layout and chapter lengths.
However, within these restrictions the thing works briliiantly. A big advantage is that it burns the DVD as you are playing the vhs tape. So when the tape is finished, the DVD is completed a minute or so later (using your PC's DVD burner). Also I now use my original Camcorder to play the original tapes, and plug into Dazzle (slightly better video quality). The quality of the DVDs is super, I am really amazed.
I can also use Windows Moviemaker to import the video from Dazzle and do all my normal editing. However the quality is not just as good because the signal goes through additional conversion steps.
A brilliant piece of kit at the price!

don't buy this time-consuming, constantly crashing, non-compatible programme. I have a good computer, and got a new vcr to transfer family videos to dvd. Broken up black and white pictures quality and no audio was the result. i downloaded the latest upgrade, no difference. One of the instant chat helpline people (ONE good thing about this product) said to try the free Studio 10 trial included in the package software. THIS product works much better, but guess what: you won't get it to record in colour unless you pay for the full version which has on it "bonus content". ie. the full version , or the trial, won't record in colour for you!!! Also, it keeps crashing, as does instant dvd recorder. Nice idea, crap product.

1 out of 5 stars Dazzle DVD Recorder - Absolute rubbish   August 28, 2007

Simple USB2... just connect your analogue device and away you go it says on the box. Like hell!! Connect your device then spend endless hours trying to get it to work more like. As usual with plug and play... no instructions on what to do if it doesn't work. You just get directed to help files which are no help and on-line support which is equally inept. The provided software does not work. It constantly crashes the computer and the only way to recover is hit the power button and risk corrupting your hard drive. I have windows Vista32 with only legally bought software installed. I have followed all instructions precisely, have downloaded and installed the lastest driver update and still it wont work. 40 wasted.

1 out of 5 stars Rubbish - wish I hadn't bought it.   September 3, 2007

The hardware to get the video onto your computer works fine, no problems with that. The software, however, is a total load of rubbish. It constantly crashes and malfunctions - the resulting DVD won't even play. To top it all, it crashed again and I lost the whole project that I'd spent a whole day working on. I am now using different software which works well. I would not recommend this product unless you already have some good video editing software.

I have tried various methods of getting VCR and other such media in to DVD format and by far this is the best device. It is slick and sorry for the pun does what it says on the tin. I tend to use the pc as a bypass, by which I mean connect the Dazzle to USB and VCR, then set the program to record straight to DVD, enter a ruff duration time in to the program and add a couple of minutes breathing space. Consider the PC a no go area for the duration of the movie or Video and if you can get back to it a couple of minutes before the planned end so that when the end is in sight you can click finish. The software then closes the DVD and it is ready use.
It is that simple. Yes it takes a while to transfer videos but this is general because of the 1 to 1 speed it does it. Not through any fault of the device.
The build quality of the unit is good. Other members of the family have since bought there own and have found it to be as easy.

What more can be asked.
