No OLE October 15, 2008 Ian H (Glasgow, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Before buying this, I downloaded a free copy of DrawPlus 4 for evaluation. This appeared to have most of the features I wanted, including the ability to embed objects into its documents, and so I went ahead with my purchase. After installing it, I was extremely impressed until I tried to embed an object. It turns out - and Serif's technical support have confirmed this - that this can't be done. All pasting of vector graphics items is by means of metafiles and this loses size information in the original. Since contacting technical support, I have checked whether DrawPlus X2 objects can be embedded or linked into other applications' documents and it appears that they can't - although (of course!) DrawPlus 4 objects can. Curiously, a set-up option allows you to set the "OLE and Clipboard" resolution - but where's the OLE? The lack of any OLE capability is why I've awarded only three stars. A silly fault is that, if you try to access the Colour Management dialog box without having an ICC profile set up for your printer or monitor, DrawPlus crashes. Again, technical support cheerfully admitted this. Well, there are ways of writing programs so that they cope with situations like this more gracefully. Finally, be warned. You can't register the program online and when you phone Serif to do it, you get a hard sell to buy more stuff. This is a feature I remember from once dealing with them many years ago and has deterred me from having anything to do with them until I bought X2.
Great for flash animation October 4, 2008 Brian Frost This product is cool! I bought WebPlus by Serif about 5 months ago and found that so easy, I bought DrawPlus a couple of months later to try making some flash animations for my web site. Everyone had told me that flash animation was very difficult to do, but I've found it very easy in DrawPlus. I probably had a head start as the user interface is similar to WebPlus which I'd already been using for a couple of months, but even so I reckon anyone could pick this up and start creating animations. If you want to create an animation you can just say that you want an object to start in a certain position, and finish in a different position, say, 10 seconds later. The software then automatically smoothly animates the object from point A to point B. You can then get more clever and make the object follow a different path, make it spin while it's moving, or get smaller or bigger, plus loads of other stuff which I haven't even tried yet. For a quick web banner which is what I was after, I honestly can't imagine that any product could do a better job.
a drawer's delight November 22, 2008 E. Dale (W. Yorks, England UK) As both my eldest son and my son in law are in the grpahic designs business I gave this to them to try and the both loved it. The X2 means that it is works with the Vista operating system, you needn't be too worried about compatibility. DrawPlus is essentially a vector drawing tool, aimed at those users who like the idea of digital drawing but don't have the money or confidence to opt for a full-blown, or expensive package. As with most art packages, the interface is made easier if you use a tablet to draw. With this is mind, the new features allow you to change the style of your pen, so creating different styles far more easily. Freeform is a new addition and makes it easier to add new objects. One of the new additions they particularly liked was the way you can now edit objects far more easily. This is achieved by holding the Control down and then simply moving your object around. While this doesn't sound like much of a step forward, it does make changing your hand drawn images a lot easier to manage.
