Elements 4 The Missing Item! October 18, 2005 Dee W. (Filey,North Yorkshire.) 392 out of 418 found this review helpful
Elements 4 has several excellent new features.HOWEVER,the reviews I have seen so far have not warned possible purchasers that Adobe has seen fit to REMOVE THE FILE BROWSER. The Organiser has now to be accessed & a file loaded,if it is not already loaded in the Organiser. With Raw files, which are becomming very popular with enthusiasts, you can be waiting anything between 3-5 mins.for a file to load...that is if you have "got" the right one to start with. The Organiser is for people taking a limited number of pics (say 500 in a year).Anyone who has a reasonable back catalogue of pics will regard the Organiser as an impossible & convoluted imposition. The file browser gave almost instant access to any file /folder & displayed all the relevant exif information at the same time.AS such it is/was the principle starting point for editing. The least Adobe can now do is provide all registered purchasers with access to a FILE BROWSER PLUGIN!!!Or offer a free exchange of the depleted Elements 4 for one with a file browser in it. Until that happens I recommend you stick to Elements 3.
Very good indeed for the money November 1, 2005 187 out of 198 found this review helpful
The product synopsis describes most of the user-friendly features for amateurs that are available in this product and very nice they are too. But Photoshop Elements 4.0 also has a dazzling array of professional image processing facilities taken from Adobe's professional product, Photoshop CS2, at approximately one-tenth of the price. Only a industrial graphic designer or someone of that ilk is likely to want more features. I would say this product is comparable to the "full strength" Photoshop 5.0 of ten years ago which means it is very good value for money in my view.
Good but not great January 26, 2006 58 out of 68 found this review helpful
I am a fan of Adobe products, but this latest version is disappointing for a number of different reasons. It still takes ages to open and start the application. They still haven't done anything to speed this up RAW files take an age to load up anything up to 5 minutes Adobe have removed the file browser!! The magic wand tool is not very good at selecting an imageThis is still a good application, but there are better alternatives for the same price. If you can afford it go for the full Adobe photoshop application, but be warned though great this is a complicated piece of kit.
Superb photo editing software September 13, 2006 Eric Baker (London) 53 out of 53 found this review helpful
I've used lots of different image editors including The Gimp, Paint.NET, Photoshop Elements 2 and the very expensive Photoshop CS2. But Elements 4 is my favourite by a long way. It's got a wonderfully easy interface (especially if you ignore its Organiser and just use Windows Explorer to put images in a sensible folder structure) and is quite quick on my humble half Gig XP PC, even with a dozen large images loaded (hint if you find it slow, go to Edit, Preferences, Memory and increase the max used value to 80%+). I find it pretty easy now to add someone to a group shot so you can't tell who was added (the camera often lies!) and can also make convincing panoramas from multiple shots. Perspective adjustment (for those inward leaning cathedrals etc) is a fancy tool which works very well. But it's all the basic image editing that is fabulous, especially when you start using keyboard shortcuts. The Quick fix collection is really useful, scanning, cropping and resizing easy, the levels histogram brings dull pictures to life and all the tools are beautifully crafted with full control over opacity etc.
Drove me mad, so gave up on it June 13, 2006 D. Cromwell (Reading, Berkshire) 48 out of 60 found this review helpful
I've recently given up on Elements 4 and uninstalled it completely. I had hoped it would be the only album/editor I would need, however it failed to meet any of my expectations. The main problems are to do with the time taken to complete any task, plus the constant risk of the whole thing crashing meaning another restart. Switching between the album and the editor is a clunky hit-and-miss affair. I've no doubt that it has some brilliant features, but my life is too short to wait for the software to catch up. If you want to get one photo absolutely perfect and have plenty of time, this could be very useful. However if you simply want to whizz through your holiday snaps making minor edits get something else like Picasa, which at least doesn't cost you anything.
