5 out of 5 stars Outstanding....no competition   March 24, 2008

I have tried Nortons, McAfee and Bullguard and they all either slow the machine down or have compatability problems even on Windows XP Pro. So I tried the free AVG antivirus 7.5 and this was very simple and effective. So I bought the full AVG v8 Internet Security package from AVG on line (although Amazon are cheaper!) and it is excellent. You wouldn't know it was there. Very simple and the spam filter is the best I have come across. You can download a trial version. I have wasted so much time and money on others - go for this one.

This security system seems to be running fine on my laptop. Speaking as a technophobe I have to say that I did need help to install it, but that's down to me being inept with computer gadgetry. So far, everything is running safe and secure, just like the blurb promised.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only technophobe who's installed this software. But unfortunately, I didn't have assistance installing, which is a shame as it asked me a few technical questions during the installation process that I didn't have the answer for, so I guessed.

I did have an initial glitch with this software as it interfered/conflicted with my Microsoft Office, especially Outlook, software. But this became resolved after a couple of restarts.

Then I had problems accessing my usual sites as pop-ups appeared asking things like; "a system request has been made to connect to URL blah blah, do you want to grant access?" And I would think "I dunno, who is that?" so I would click 'no', but then when I couldn't access my usual sites like Bike Trader, etc. I soon realised I'd have to click 'yes for safe' or 'yes for all' next time.

So the next perplexity I was left thinking with was "what the heck does yes for safe mean!"

Eventually, I got into the habit of clicking "yes for all", as I was a bit fed up with all the interference. Which, in a sense, makes me feel like I've nullified part of the protection the software gives - almost like an open door policy. But anyway, since then, apart from some minor slowing when my PC starts-up I've hardly noticed the software.

To my recollection there's only been one warning of an imminent internet threat, so as far as I can tell, it's doing its job in the background and I guess that's all anyone really needs from anti-virus software.

Finally, for all of you who understand these terminologies, here's a list of its features:

1. Anti-Virus
2. Anti-Spyware
3. Ant-Spam
4. Firewall
5. Anti-Rootkit
6. System Tools
7. E-mail Scanner
8. License
9. LinkScanner
10. Web Shield
11. Resident Shield
12. Update Manager

I do have one final concern; the "License" portion of my features states it will expire 02 July 2008, i.e. one month as opposed to the one year I was expecting, therefore, I don't quite know what to expect when 3rd July gets here. I will update this review once that happens.

3 out of 5 stars Awkward installation but reasonable protection vs system performance   May 17, 2008

The software wil only take about 4-5 minutes to install however entering the licence key is a little cumbersome as you need to enter a mixture of 30 alpha-numeric characters entered with hyphens in one field. Other software have a number of fields with hypens already inserted inbetween to make it easier to enter. After installation you are asked to set up task scheduling which asks you to select updates every 4hrs or daily. It also asks you to enter the preferred time for a system scan. The company must be related to Yahoo or have a deal with them the set up process also asks you to change the default search provider to Yahoo (you have the option to decline). Like most other software you are then recommended to update protection and search online for new updates. As I found out, failure to be actually connected to the internet causes the programme to freeze. I had to manually end the task and update the software by opening up the AVG internet Security. Updates took only about 4 minutes to complete but I did notice that my firewall was not enabled during this process which means whilst the software was updating, I was open to attack which had me a little worried. A few clicks through the firewall configuration wizard (about 2 minutes) however and I was fully protected. I am assuming this was part of the initial set up process that I had to abort however.

Like most security software it provides protection from the moment you start it up and you have the option to perform full scans of your computer or update virus information. Other protection other than antivirus and firewall include
* antispyware (protects from malicious software that may collect information from your computer)
* Antispam - checks all incoming email messages for unwanted spam
* Anti-rootkit - scans for dangerous software hidden inside applications, drivers that could allow an attacker to gain administer level access to your computer/network
* Email scanner - checks incoming/outgoing mail and moves any viruses to a secure location
* Linkscanner - works with firefox and internet explorer and prevents you from accidentally becoming infected by ensuring the webpages you visit are safe and that related links from that site are OK too.
* Webshield - protects you from downloading infected files
* Resident Shield - prevents activation of infected files.

AVG sits in your system try like most security software and a toolbar is added to your internet explorer. As mentioned the company must be associated with Yahoo somehow as a Yahoo search engine field is added to the toolbar automatically. This AVGToolbar may be switched off easily by right clicking on the toolbar and un-ticking the toolbar option.

The software claims on the front of the package to not slow your computer down which seemed to be true to an extent. Unlike some software, it didn't slow my computer down too much but there seems to be a fine line between having 24-7 protection and processor usage. In comparison to my old security software Norton 2006 there didn't seem to be much of a difference in slowing my system down. Considering the level of protection the software was giving, it seemed to be doing well comparatively. I wouldn't however agree that it didn't slow my PC down at all because I think it does.
All in all reasonable all round protection without too much compromise on system performance, although fiddly installation.

4 out of 5 stars It does what it promises   May 17, 2008

The internet is a wonderful thing that gives you access to a world of information from your personal computer. However like most things, the internet can be a dangerous place. With hackers, spyware, and viruses at almost every turn putting you at risk from identity fraud, corrupt data, junk emails and worms. You must protect yourself at any cost. Ok maybe it's not quite as dramatic as that, but most of us will agree that some sort of security suite is desirable.

I have been using the freeware version of AVG anti-virus for a number of years now and for the most part found it offered me good protection against viruses. I would usually pair it up with a stand along firewall such as Zonealarm. So why did I then upgrade to AVG Internet Security. Simply because I wanted something that offered me more rounded and comprehensive protection. I was hoping that this software package would give me that, and despite a few problems detailed below it has.

I know a few people who have had trouble installing the program but I found the installation of the package was easy and reasonable quick. And after the definitions updated themselves I thought that I was set and ready to go. However I decided that I would make sure that the program was up to date, so I did a manual update and it downloaded even more updates which for some reason took nearly twenty minutes. I thought it was strange that it hadn't automatically got these updates, perhaps you are better updating the program yourself rather than relying on the auto update. I somehow managed to install a Yahoo toolbar which is something I didn't really want so I had to spend time removing it. I've never had that major a problem with spam emails so sadly I can't comment on the effectiveness of AVG's spam filter.

Needless to say it's not all bad. AVG Internet Security doesn't seem to noticeable drain any system resources or slow me down in anyway (unlike McAfee which made my system grind to a haul.) The user interface is simple, well laid out and easy to understand. For the most part the package simply runs happily in the background and requires little user input. Finally it does what it promises, offering real-time online security to keep you and your computer safe.

So overall, I thought that this is a reasonably good package for a reasonably good price. If you are on a budget it is ideal as it offers more protection than the free version.
