Seems good and easy to use, but do you possibly need full Internet Security instead? October 22, 2008 DSR (out beyond the sticks) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Years ago, "everyone" seemed to recommend Norton's Antivirus or their Internet Security package and I found their earlier efforts very good for me, but as computers got faster and more capable and "Windows" became more memory intensive, it seemed to give the software manufacturers free licence to bloat up their software, making it all but useless for older computers. This apparently happened to Norton for a while and years of good reputations went out of the window. Norton used to be very difficult to remove from systems, despite their "removal tool" and after a system crash and subsequent Windows re-load I left Norton off and in the meantime, I found a free firewall and used AVG 2008 Free anti-Virus on one computer and the excellent (for me), non-intrusive, Eset Nod32 anti-virus on a good but very old "Pentium III" PC in my home office. Norton claim to have sorted its over-demanding nature some time ago apparently, so I thought I'd try this software out on a spare computer to see how it's changed, as I never really got on with AVG, despite it seeming to do the job ok. The computer in question is a "socket A" AMD Sempron 2600+. Fast enough for most duties but painfully out-dated to computer "geeks" today. Once loaded, the update process works quickly as it always did and I very much like the updated user screens. This program doesn't seem any more intrusive than any of the others and a full scan showed up no anomalies. To conclude. If you need complete protection including good parental controls, I'd look for a full security package, but if you're well protected and firewalled otherwise, I think I can recommend this software for general use. Obviously, if you have a well read computer expert in your family or circle of friends, get them to advise you, as I'm not in a position to say whether this software really is better than AVG's Free edition... It's certainly easier to use I think, but that's because I've used Norton on and off for years..
A good but not great product. October 18, 2008 P. A. Smith (Hampshire) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Norton Anti Virus 2009 is a good product if you are just looking for some core protection for your computer against viruses, trojan horses etc but if you already have Norton Internet Security or Norton 360 then you already have better protection than this program. So I would check what level of protection you alrady have and decided the level of protection that is right for you before deciding if this is the right product for you. I am sure that it will serve as a basic level of protection but the other products from Norton offer so much more.
Does what it claims on the box - quickly October 29, 2008 Stephen Hill 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is an easy to set up and use Antivirus program. It runs without slowing down the PC and regularly updates to ensure it is protecting against the most current internet threats. The software enables you to install on 3 computers and the network settings are easy to use and ensure that you home network is fully protected from viruses. If you have a young family you may wish to go for the full internet protection programs, with parental controls. The best selling point is that this runs and you don't know it is there protecting you as there is no reduction in PC speed. It comes from a highly respected name in PC protection. Finally it should be noted that you are buying a 12 month license with this product and so it will need renewing after that time.
Unobtrusive Virus Checking October 30, 2008 The Soft Machine Operator (COVENTRY, WARWICKSHIRE United Kingdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've used Norton in the past and found it slowed my PC down a lot, but this problem seems to have been cleared up with this version. The software has made no noticable change, and a first run cleared up a number of low risk cookies and other such stuff. Installation was quick, and when running it can be configured to make use of idle time to run scans. It also intelligently works out what files it doesn't need to scan again, so subsequent scans should be quicker. It also doesn't annoy you with constant popups and remains unobtrusive if desired. What impressed me most was how after one scan it picked up 20 or so problems (Many of the high priority trojans) that had been accumulating on my PC for a while. It appears the virus checking solution I was using beforehand was not particularly effective!
Excellent program October 27, 2008 Adamski (UK) If you have a firewall (there is one built-into Windows) and you don't need parental controls etc then this security program is excellent with the added bonus of being speedy! The all singing, all dancing internet security 'suites' tend to slow down a pc too much with all their constant background activity. This one does the essentials, it checks for viruses and it checks for spyware. Job done.
