| Customer Reviews: Looks fine - difficult to rate December 30, 2008 Joyce 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
Installed on 3 PCs. 2 PCs are XP and one is Vista.
Sorry to hear that a couple of people are having speed problems.
Mine are all fine.
Installation and operation seem pretty slick to me.
So was last year's version.
How do I rate it? I can only assume it's doing it's job as I've never had a virus or other nasty.
So I've rated it on speed of installation and operation. That's all I can do. And , fingers crossed, it does the job.
Why did I choose Norton?
Two reasons, 1. Bad experiences with Macafee a few years ago and 2. I've never had a problem with Norton. So, nothing scientific.
If it's like the beta, it'll be good!! September 6, 2008 J. Craig (UK) 53 out of 56 found this review helpful
If this product is anything like the beta version, this is going to be a vast improvement over the 2008 version. New features like Norton Insight, which allows you to scan files and compare them to trusted versions on the Norton servers means full system scans will be much quicker, due to these files being ignored if they haven't changed since Insight was run! Another great feature, which has appeared is the site adviser, similar to McAfee's, which can be downloaded as part of an add-on pack.
If this wasn't enough, liveupdate has been re-engineered to make it quicker, with updates more frequently, meaning you're always protected. The whole program itself is also much faster, which certainly will be popular with a lot of customers!
So is it all good then? Well if there is a downside to this review, I haven't seen it yet!
EDIT: Good news! It's just as good, and customers with existing subscriptions can upgrade free from the Symantec US site! (Which is what I did, with no problems!)
Norton Internet Security 2009 November 12, 2008 S. J. Smith 75 out of 80 found this review helpful
Billed as delivering a faster and more streamlined edition of Norton's acclaimed protection platform, Internet Security 2009 (NIS 09) had a lot to live up to given that my previous 'general user' experiences with Norton products had been distinctly user-unfriendly and not all that impressive in terms of performance and efficiency.
First impressions were fairly good, with NIS 09 installing considerably quicker than I was expecting, taking around three to four minutes without the hassle of ploughing through layers of advanced setting options. Once officially registered, the software's (customisable) main interface appears, offering a dashboard of easy to peruse controls and also access to a handy and in-depth help portfolio covering the entire program.
Already feeling a little more well laid out and user-friendly than prior Norton offerings, it's not difficult to get to grips with NIS 09's three core sections: Computer, Internet and Identity, which in turn offer up the likes of scan history, system scan options, live updates, quarantined files, firewall options, e-mail scanning, anti-phishing and more.
As the product's title suggests, Norton's package attempts to cover pretty much all the bases when it comes to malicious attacks capable of infecting or grabbing control of your system, bombarding you with spam, or even stealing your personal details. But how does it perform when push comes to shove?
A big plus point for this reviewer was the immediate improved speed of NIS 09's scanning, which ran through the whole computer in a matter of minutes (of course, speed will differ per user based on the amount of files that require scanning). However, it remains to be seen whether that efficiency is maintained over time, which is something that blighted my last encounter with Norton-branded protection.
In terms of scanning for all types of malware (worms, Trojans, and the like), NIS 09 seemed to perform well in general but struggled a little when attempting to scan through password-protected files. And, when tasked with blocking known malicious Web sites, it caught most but surprisingly turned a blind eye to one or two such destinations well known for being dangerous to unwitting computer systems.
Thanks to its user-implemented spam detection and filtration feature, NIS 09 is able to monitor a user's e-mail account for any unwanted activity, and Norton's latest package certainly seems more than capable of assisting in rooting out unwanted and potentially harmful inbox fluff. As a bonus layer of protection, an additional instant messaging scan is also available, which scrutinises any files downloaded through IM clients such as AIM, Yahoo, and MSN Messenger.
Ultimately, as with any mainstream system protection software, Norton Internet Security 2009 - 1 User 3 Computers (PC) provides relatively solid performance that works hard to block the Net's myriad of threats and improve the overall stability of the user's experience. Granted, it won't deflect everything that nefarious Web criminals throw at it, but there isn't a product available that guarantees such performance and NIS 09 is a marked improvement over its Norton predecessors.
Easy to use. Offers more layered scanning and security than previous Norton solutions. Regular live updating keeps protection sharp edged. Provides a convincingly comprehensive blanket for typical home users. Mainstream protection at an affordable mainstream price. Norton finally appears to be shaking its reputation for being fiddly and a little underwhelming. I'm almost converted.
Quick, effective and less intrusive than before November 26, 2008 Ben (Hereford, UK) 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
I'd used Norton before but had often found it clunky to use and infuriatingly slow.
The more recent models, however, have proved to be a pleasant surprise and the latest incarnation has been the best yet in my experience.
Installation was really fast and required very little effort on my part. Scans are much much faster (quick - under a minute, full - about 20mins) and the feature which removes tracking cookies is a particularly useful time-saving feature. The panel is easy to understand and updates seem to come more quickly and with little interruption to functionality too.
In short, a great improvement which has left me a happy customer.
Buyers of Norton Internet Security 2009 beware! December 31, 2008 J. HENDY 145 out of 157 found this review helpful
I have used Norton Antivirus/Internet Security products for many years and have usually purchased a 'new edition' which is normally cheaper than subscribing to Norton for an 'on-line' renewal of an existing product. This was the case when I decided to purchase the 'Norton Internet Security 2009' from Amazon; the item being replaced was the '2008' version of Norton Internet Security.
My operating system is XP 'Home Edition'.
Having carefully followed the very limited but seemingly simple instructions contained in the CD container, I arrived at a point where the software detected the previous edition and having asked me to authorise its removal, started to remove the 2008 version. Following several warnings regarding allegedly missing files I ended up in an 'impasse' where the programme could neither continue with installation of the 2009 nor completely uninstall the 2008 versions. I then attempted manually uninstalling both versions with the intention of starting 'afresh' but this was soon followed by a fatal corruption of my system whereby the majority of programmes migrated to files with a '.lnk' suffix, rendering most of my system unusable. As a result I was forced to employ a consultant who eventually managed to fix the problem having employed a removal tool, allegedly 'deeply buried' within the Norton website, that 'scours' the system of all residual Norton products.
Although the programme has been working well since being successfully installed the overall experience was both frustrating and expensive. This, combined with an 'unhelpful' rsponse from a Norton telephone helpline operator who dismissed the problem out of hand as a 'system error' suggests that I am unlikely to use similar Norton products again.
Without doubt the major contributory factor was the extremely limited installation instructions provided with the product.
