| Customer Reviews: A lightweight easy to use alternative to Photoshop January 1, 2009 John Nunn (Coventry, U.K.) 189 out of 192 found this review helpful
As a software developer working mainly with web technologies, I have to constantly manage and manipulate images. This is a task I am hopeless at I can crop and resize images but anything else and I find it almost impossible. I have a full copy of Adobe Photoshop CS3 yet find the program totally bewildering; I have completed several courses on using it but to no avail. Image manipulation is completely different skill to software development, requiring a different mindset.
After struggling a friend suggested I try PaintShop Pro, as it was a lightweight image manipulation package designed to make tasks easy. So I downloaded the trial version and started to give it a try; after about an hour I ordered the full version. It is so easy to use and create the effects my clients so often want. The ability to apply effects and create what I considered complex tasks in Photoshop was an absolute doddle in Paintshop Pro. Adding a drop shadow effect is just a few clicks as is creating a reflection.
For the price this is a superb application and should form part of any developer's toolbox.
The one to buy April 21, 2009 Philip Waters (UK) 72 out of 73 found this review helpful
The full version of photoshop is of course the standard by which all photo editors are measured, but it's cost is huge. Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate is a fraction of the price but still contains the vast majority of the functions that photographers are likely to need- more than Photoshop Elements.
Perhaps not the easiest application for beginners, but I would still recommend it as something you can grow into-better than having to buy it later when you discover that your existing program can't do what you need.
The Ultimate version adds extra programs, some are useful, others less so but definately worth trying out at the very least. The video tutorials provide an excellent way of getting to grips with the methodologies. And an always useful pendrive is an added bonus!
Lots to do June 7, 2009 S. Gleeson (Lancashire, England) 26 out of 26 found this review helpful
I purchased this item after seeing a short demo on tv. I already have photoshop 7 ,but cannot yet get the hang of it.Paintshop pro makes it much easier to do some things .Eg.You can colour parts different colours easily.
There are lots of easy effects to use.
The learning center is very helpful.
I am hoping that by using paintshop,i may then be able to progress to photoshop ( which is much more complex ).
The more i use it ,the more i learn things.
The thing is not to worry too much,as there is a useful help section,a booklet, and you can always delete something you have made a mess of (providing you have worked on the copy you are advised to make ).
Excellent value for money June 3, 2009 J. Hollands (uk) 57 out of 58 found this review helpful
Having bought a 'Carlos Fandango' of a digital camera I thought I had better buy a photo editing programme to go with it. Having reviewed some of them in the camera magazines and online this one seemed to suit my purpose. I did not want something so complicated to spend hours editing my photos but wanted something that was better than the standard 'windows' editor. This fits the bill perfectly and at a good price too. It is far better than the price suggests and very easy to use with instructions every step if needed. There are two auto fix methods, one is excellent allowing user input the other is automatic and not very good IMHO. It allows you to auto save the originals so you always have the original no matter what changes you make. If you are new to the digital world of editing (like me), on a budget, or want something that does what it says on the box. This is for you.
Comprehensive package at a cracking price August 17, 2009 Mr. L. Williams (Exeter) 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
I've used Paint Shop Pro since version 5. It has virtually all the features of Photoshop without the price-tag. It used to have a reputation as not being easy to use but the latest version has copious help and video tutorials. This is a professional package and can do virtually anything; the videos are easy to follow; I found the one on the Time Machine function of particular interest, you can take a photo and see how it would look if it had been taken at a particular time in history, the feature goes back to 1839!
This, the Ultimate version comes with some extra programs, mainly PhotoRecovery, Background eraser and Photo Essentials, together with a 2GB Toshiba usb memory stick.
The PhotoRecovery software installs as a separate icon. I shot some photos with my camera onto an SD card, then did an all erase in the camera. It was a little slow but it recovered all but one, although it did show the thumbnail. I also did a format on the card and it recovered all the photos.
Corel Painter Photo Essentials installs as a separate icon and turns photos into paintings. There are copious controls over the type of painting and it is mesmerising to watch as the dabs of paint are applied! This is a cut-down version of Corel's Painter Essentials and doesn't allow you to "paint" you can only turn photos into paintings.
The background eraser installs into Paint Shop as a plug-in. You need to promote the background layer to use it and you then get a information box up, clicking on help gives the instructions on use. It does work well.
Considering all that you get and Amazon's prices, often lower on Deal of the Week, this is a hard package to beat and I can heartily recommend it.
