Rewritten but not for the better October 22, 2007 Fam Hist Buff (Manchester, UK) 46 out of 53 found this review helpful
Having bought this as an 'upgrade' to FTM 2006 I thought I was in for faster access, more place name reports and easier data entry. I was sadly misguided. True, the system read my previous FTM file in without a hitch but then I was presented with a screen so cluttered it took me 5 minutes to recognise any of the features. The name sort on the left is a joke. True, it gives you options to sort in name order, DOB order but not a mixture so, as the previous name finder could sort on Surname by DOB, this one can't so all your 'John's' and 'Frederick's' are sorted in no particular date order. This means scrolling through each one until you find the right person. The place name report doesn't filter to just places; it includes all other facts as a place. That's not my file causing this either, I've checked. Data entry isn't as intuitive as previous versions either. Family Books, a great feature in FTM, is now only available by uploading your file info to Ancestry Press. True there are some good things about the system, but if you're used to previous incarnations of FTM and you buy this, be prepared for a long learning curve as you get to grips with the new layout. You're also under the control of Ancestry.co.uk/.com. which for me is not where I want to go for my records. It's as though Ancestry had a program themselves that they attached on to the exisiting software engine. A poor rewrite I'm afraid and takes the FTM product back several years.
BEWARE Free ?? Ancestry Subscription October 26, 2007 Ken Burnett (Bucks UK) 23 out of 30 found this review helpful
Note that the Free 3/6 month Ancestry Subscription featured with this product is NOT available to existing or lapsed subscribers. If subscribers decline to renew it is likely that a 20% price reduction offer will be triggered. The Ancestry product is good but the contactability and ethics of the company leave much to be desired.
Great Product Platinum by Name and By Nature October 24, 2007 Easy Treesy (Chippenham, Wiltshire) 17 out of 22 found this review helpful
Wow, this new software really delivers. I was sceptical at first given the fact the Deluxe version is a few pounds cheaper, but this is really worth paying the extra for. The phsyical packaging of the product is A*, but an extra 3 months over the 3 month free subscription to Your Family Tree Magazine would have been a nice touch-but that's being really picky. I've really to get under the bonnet of this baby, but as an engine this one really purrs-the interaction with the rich record content on the Ancestry.co.uk site really makes it stand out for me. Well done Ancestry!
First time for everything October 24, 2007 Mr. P. G. Lewis (London) 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
This is the first time that I have bought any software for building a family tree as I have been used to building my trees online. I must say that I was very surprised at how much they pack into this software package and also how much functionality above and beyond the normal online tree builders. Well worth it if you are looking to start or continue your tree building and with a easy to use interface this is something that I feel I'll spend many night using.
Not an improvement on previous versions November 10, 2007 Tim W (UK) 16 out of 19 found this review helpful
Have just loaded FTM 2008 and it is completely different from previous versions. The initial impressions are of a very cluttered screen with lack on intuitive movement between generations. The family page at least now shows all children but data entry is in a different part of the page. Luckily it does not seem to overwrite previous versions so I am sticking with 2005 for now. Anyone thinking of upgrading should review other programs that are available as this is really a new program tagged with the old name and will require relearning everything.
