I was foolish enough to take to option of "upgrading" to this product when it was time to renew the subscription for my SystemWorks, which was fine previously. Internet Security 2008 has caused nothing but trouble. I have been unable to install it properly as I received multiple error messages and the support from Asia has been appalling with sporadic responses and complicated solutions requiring uninstalling and reinstalling parts of SystemWorks. Surely an "upgrade" should be compatible with the base from which it upgrades? In addition, the installation instructions should be complete and say if any modifications to existing software are required, especially if the existing software is also Norton! I have been a happy Norton user for nearly 20 years but now I have severe doubts. Purchase with caution and expect some difficulties!

I have installed this program and it has been fine, but i recommend when the newer versions of norton come out, to do a clean install, remove your previous verison with the Norton Removal Tool, which will completely remove all traces of norton from your system. A clean install will work fine, i assure you.

2 out of 5 stars Frustrating for experienced users   January 3, 2008

I moved to this version with the last online update and have so far not experienced any major problems with my PC as such.

However what I have found infuriating is how each year Norton change the software to make it treat the user more and more like an idiot. For example, you used to just right click the icon in your desktop tray to turn off auto-protect, something that is sometimes advisable to do while you install new software as the anti-virus software can sometimes get in the way.

Now you have to find the option to have the tray icon display, and even then when you click it, it pops up yet another menu that asks you how long it should be down for. Do the makers not realise that users are capable of switiching it back on themselves etc.

Another really annoying feature is the Anti-Phising nonsense. This is basically a new gimmick which puts an infuriating bar in your browser which you cannot uninstall. The bar snoops on everything you do and tells you if the website you are on is "safe".

The final issue is with the speed your computer may run at. Norton is a hungry beast when it comes to memmory and processor power. My PC is quite old now, and takes ages to start up.

In future I am going to uninstall Internet Security and simply run just the Anti-Virus, I now plan to use a less demanding firewall like Zone Alarm.

This way, I can live my life how I like and the anti-virus can shut up and just run quietly in the background. As it should.

That said, if you don't know a lot about computers or IT, Norton is probably your best all round bet. Its a shame they don't offer a much more customisable install for more experienced users, who will be annoyed by all the constant warnings and flashing lights.

1 out of 5 stars Attrocious support, doesn't work on many XP machines   December 13, 2007

Dec 2007 - This product is excellent when it works, but beware before you upgrade to it: We've installed dozens throughout our offices, and about one in three computers crashes during setup, and then won't even re-start the setup giving the helpful message "Can't start the setup. Contact technical support for assistance." Of course, there's no FAQ covering this issue, no online help guides, and technical support simply doesn't reply.

You're better off waiting until the bugs are fixed. Sad, isn't it?

Like reviews before me I was stupid enough to buy this product. It would not load despite using the removal tool. The technical support has to be a joke. You can wait for up to three hours for a response only to be cut off when they have run out of options. I have had to use the Paretologic program to remove the infections left behind from the partial load.Norton have got to get their act together before any reasonable person should be tempted - keep well clear. Use the free version of AVG - no problems there.
