One of the few CD Rom's that really is suitable for this age group March 24, 2007 J. Leonard (Hampshire) 33 out of 34 found this review helpful
I bought this title originally over 10 years ago for my eldest daughter and have just bought it again to get a copy more suited to Windows XP - it really is that good, and it is the only CD Rom I have found that I would think is truly suitable for young children. We have had others that have just been too difficult without a lot of help, either with the activity or with the necessary mouse skills. In Jump Ahead the activities are simple enough to enable 3-4 year olds to be able to tackle them as well as having to learn to use the mouse. The items to click on are suitably large and well defined. The activities are challenging enough without being too difficult. The instructions are clearly said. (though be warned, the tunes may stick in your head!) The whole Jump Ahead series is brilliant, and I thoroughly recommend this as an introduction to using a computer.
Great buy March 8, 2008 L. Shepherd (Warwickshire) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
My daughter is 3 and just loves this, she knows most of the words and sits for as long as we'll allow switching from task to task.
Poor Software Design July 1, 2008 Kaio 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have no problem with the content as such (tend to agree with previous reviewers), however, the software looks ancient. You only get it to work if logged in as an Administrator, or the program halts prompting a message "Error opening tune file ...". The tune file referred to cannot be found on the computer either because (it seems) this is internal to the program which is quite hopeless as you cannot do anything with the prompt message even if you're software literate (such as changing the folder/file permission as appropriate, assuming it's access permission problem which appears to be the case). The Publisher indicates Windows XP as being supported, but really NO, that is NOT the case if you cannot run the program as an ordinary User of the computer. Administrative privilege is reserved for serious security configuration and software installations, not for running preschool software! The program should be able to run under "User Account" (as opposed to "Administrative Account") in which case the User (in this case a 3- to 4-year old child) will not be able to do the unexpected with the ultimate control the Admin account can provide (such as wiping out the hard disk). I checked the support website and although numerous other titles by the same Publisher are provided with "patches", unfortunately this software didn't even deserve a patch to keep up with the requirements of the operating system (in my case Windows XP SP2). If not fit for the purpose as advertised, why sell it?
