5 out of 5 stars Another Great Album   July 22, 2010

I bought Cherry Ghosts first album, A Thirst For Romance back in November 2007 and although I thought the singles Mathematics and People Help The People were great it took me a few plays to fully appreciate the album. Once I did, the album was on constant repeat. The tracks had a slight tinge of country to them and although the lyrics were sometimes quite dark, it also had a certain warmth about it and the songs were uplifting and euphoric.

"Beneath This Burning Shoreline" is not exactly the same as the last album and I would be dissapointed if it was as this would show that they had become stale. However, they have returned with a more experienced and mature feel about them that shows a band that has great focus on there own sound. Yes, there are the odd one or two tracks that will clearly be singles and yes there are the tracks that need to be played several times for you to click with, but this only adds to the slow burner appeal of what is a fantastic album. Once the tracks have been aired a few times they become another set of essential listening.

In other words.....If you fell for their first album then you won't be disappointed as with many other awkward 2nd album releases.

They're playing live around October and I can't wait to see them for the first time.

The brainchild of Boltonian Simon Aldred, Cherry Ghost return with "Beneath This Burning Shoreline", the follow up to their superb debut release "Thirst For Romance".

From the opening Johnny Cash-esque beats of "We Sleep On Stones", you know it is going to be an epic, soaring record and the band don't disappoint. In much the same way as 2007's "Thirst For Romance", there is a mixture of styles here and the high quality of the songwriting is what really stands out. Aldred won an Ivor Novello for the 2007 song "People Help The People" and tracks such as "Luddite" and "The Night They Buried Sadie Clay" will only further enhance his reputation.

Whilst we had to wait until the end of "Thirst For Romance" for the majestic, melodic anthem "Mathematics", the highlight of "Beneath This Burning Shoreline" is track 4 - "Kissing Strangers". A atunningly beautiful song, it is destined to be one of the singles of 2010.

Beautifully crafted guitar albums are few and far between these days. However, in "Beneath This Burning Shoreline" you get a record stuffed full of brilliant, anthemic songs, superbly performed.

Highly recommended.

Second album from Simon Aldred, one of the very best lyricists in pop culture, and his band does not disappoint. From stand-out opener 'We Sleep On Stones' through essential single 'Kissing Strangers', the outstanding 'My God Betrays' to closer 'Strays At The Pond', there isn't a lot of fast-forward fodder, every track revealing subtle extra nuances on repeated listening, thanks to the brilliantly coherent production from regular collaborator Dan Austin.
My only reservation is that is doesn't move far enough away from the territory of the excellent debut album, some tracks sounding uncannily familiar.

5 out of 5 stars Mercury rising !   July 20, 2010

As I type this I hear that Cherry Ghost have NOT been listed for the 2010 Mercury Prize despite being championed by The Independent's Andy Gill who said they deserve to win it. Nay mind lads - Fine bands like Frightened Rabbit and Stornoway didn't get on the list either and who wants to be on a list with Dizzy Rascal and sponsored by Barclays Bank !
To get to the album in question...stirring stuff and no less than I expected from this under rated band who I have seen live 4 times without ever being disappointed. Simon Aldred is a great song songwriter whose angsty working class songlines are in a similar vein to geographical and label stablemates...Doves.
Kicking off with the epic 'We Sleep on Stones' quickly followed by 'A month of mornings' it's straight out the starting blocks for Simon and co. Rather suprisingly for me,the album has a fair few waltz time ballads of a C & W flavour....more so than on Thirst for Romance. They take some getting used to and first time listeners might find them dangerously close to Richard Hawley who you either love or hate. It's the latter for me. However, the quality is just too good to be be condemned to that fate.
Overall..I think TFR is the better of the two albums but this will keep existing fans more than happy without converting shed loads of new fans.

3 years after the debut album Thirst for Romance comes this hotly anticipated 2nd album.

Beneath this Burning Shoreline offers a variety of different influences whether it be in the lyrics, tunes, instruments used etc as they broaden and experiment away from the successful and catch songs of their debut.

The album begins with a great opening through 'we sleep on stones' before moving onto track 4 the signature song 'kissing strangers' which again has to be admired for some more wonderful lyrics. Other highlights include 'Luddite' and 'Barberini Square'. This album represents an experimental result with 'Black Fang' a further example of this.

Although this album may have to grow on you more than their debut, it offers existing fans and newcomers to the band another welcoming mix of songs to embrace. It is a must to have this album and I strongly recommend a purchase.
